Abstract. Stochastic Quantization (SQ) is a method for the approximation of a continuous probability distribution with a discrete one. The proposal made in this paper is to apply this technique to reduce the number of numerical simulations for systems with uncertain inputs, when estimates of the output distribution are needed. This question is relevant in volcanology, where realistic simulations are very expensive and uncertainty is always present. We show the results of a benchmark test based on a one-dimensional steady model of magma flow in a volcanic conduit.

Part 2 of this paper describes the investigation of steam turbine and exhaust hood interactions in asymmetric flows by using a multiblock multigrid 3D Navier–Stokes solver incorporating an actuator disc model. The interactions among the turbine, diffuser and collector are analyzed by using a flow model. Numerical simulations for two exhaust hoods are performed to understand the flow details and to verify the flow model analysis. Based on the understanding of turbine and exhaust interactions, suggestions for the design of efficient exhaust systems are given.

A three-lane traffic flow model is proposed to investigate the effect of car accidents on the traffic flow. The model is an extension of the full velocity difference (FVD) model by taking into account the lane changing. The extended lane-changing rules are presented to model the lane-changing behaviour. The cases that the car accidents occupy the exterior or interior lane, the medium lane, and two lanes are studied by numerical simulations. The time-space diagrams and the current diagrams are presented, and the traffic jams are investigated. The results show that the car accident has a different effect on the traffic flow when it occupies different lanes. The car accidents have a more serious effect on the whole road when they occupy two lanes. The larger the density is, the greater the influence on the traffic flow becomes.

AbstractWe have developed a detailed siphon flow model for coronal loops. We find scaling laws relating the characteristic parameters of the loop, explore systematically the space of solutions and show that supersonic flows are impossible for realistic values of heat flux at the base of the upflowing leg.
