Effect of Cr addition on damping capacity, mechanical property, and corrosion resistance of Fe-18%Mn martensitic alloy has been studied. Martensite start temperature (Ms) of the alloy decreases linearly from 150 to 25 with increasing Cr content up to 15%. The damping capacity decreases gradually from 27 to 23% in SDC with increasing Cr content from zero to 10%, and decreases rapidly with further Cr content. The tensile strength of the alloy maintains a level of 60 / regardless of Cr content with an elongation of 20 to 25%. Immersion test in 5% NaCl solution leads to the result that the corrosion resistance of the alloy becomes excellent above 10% Cr. From the above results, it is concluded that the optimum Cr content to improve the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the alloy with a lesser decrease in damping capacity is about 10%.

The anodic behavior of the three-component metal-like system Mn5Si3-2,4Ge2,4 and its individual components Mn, Si and Ge in a solution of sodium sulfate was studied by cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the corrosion resistance of manganese silicido-germanide is lower than individual components, however at big anodic potential shifting material passivates and in concentrated Na2SO4 solution passivation occurs easier and faster than in diluted one. The increasing of potential sweep leads to the inhibition of passivation process and this effect is dealing with the specifying role of diffusion in the protection layer formation process.

The results of this paper relate to a development program designed to improve the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of Al-2.5Mg alloys, by the addition of chromium and silicon, for desalination applications. The effect of 0.1 wt to 0.3 wt percent chromium addition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Al-2.5Mg in the Arabian Gulf water has been investigated. The results show that chromium addition has beneficial effects on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the Al-2.5Mg alloys. A near optimum combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance is obtained by 0.2 wt and 0.3 wt percent chromium addition.

Small amounts of nickel are added to titanium to improve the crevice corrosion resistance but this results in an alloy which has sheet fabrication difficulties and is subject to the formation of large Ti2Ni precipitates. These large precipitates can serve as local corrosion sites; but in a smaller more widely dispersed form, they can have a beneficial effect on crevice corrosion resistance. The purpose of the present work is to show that the addition of a small amount of Mo to the Ti-1.5Ni alloy reduces the Ti2Ni precipitate size and produces a more elongated grained microstructure. It has recently been reported that small additions of Mo to Ti-0.8 to lw/o Ni alloys produce good crevice corrosion resistance and improved fabrication properties.
