Thermodynamic properties of the melts of several Al–Y and Al–Fe–Y alloys are studied by means of calibrated differential thermal analysis. The results can be used to optimize process parameters of rapid solidification which are important for glass formation in the Al-based alloys. Close examinations of the melt-spun alloys show that the process parameters, particularly the temperature of the melts, will influence not only the amorphicity and the chemical short-range order but also the crystallization process of the glasses. A key point of glass formation in the Al-based alloys is found to be related to the content in the melts of a certain amount of the intermetallic compounds which are gradually dissolved in the premelted α Al matrix.

The published results of the research on crystallization process of nickel base superalloy castings rarely take into account the effect of the wall thickness of the casting. Current study presents a comprehensive assessment of the impact of molten alloy temperature, mould temperature, mould thermal insulation and casting diameter on crystallization process of polycrystalline nickel base superalloy. Research was designed and conducted as an factorial experiment at two levels. Different diameter samples were designed and optimised by the numerical simulation of solidification process using ProCAST software. Inconel 713C nickel based superalloy was cast into alumina-silicate moulds produced by lost wax technique. Casting temperature during solidification was measured using thermocouples installed in sections having a diameter of 10 and 20 mm. Statistical analysis of the influence of the main process parameters and casting diameter on cooling rate, total freezing temperature range and critical temperature range was performed. Cooling rates in the range from 0.21 to 1.24°C/s were obtained. It was found that diameter of the casting, mould temperature and the thermal insulation of the mould had significant effect on the cooling rate.

Active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) particle size distribution is important for both downstream processing operations and in vivo performance. Crystallization process parameters and reactor configuration are important in controlling API particle size distribution (PSD). Given the large number of parameters and the scale-dependence of many parameters, it can be difficult to design a scalable crystallization process that delivers a target PSD. Population balance modeling is a useful tool for understanding crystallization kinetics, which are primarily scale-independent, predicting PSD, and studying the impact of process parameters on PSD. Although population balance modeling (PBM) does have certain limitations, such as scale dependency of secondary nucleation, and is currently limited in commercial software packages to one particle dimension, which has difficulty in predicting PSD for high aspect ratio morphologies, there is still much to be gained from applying PBM in API crystallization processes.

AbstractThe objective of the research was to determine the influence of boron on the crystallization process and microstructure of ductile cast iron. In the case of ductile cast iron it is a vital issue because even as little as trace presence of boron changes the properties of ductile cast iron in a significant way. With the use of a new ATD-4 (TDA) tester and CRYSTALDIGRPAH converter it was possible to measure the crystallization process parameters of the same alloy with four different contents of boron in one mould. Four samples with different boron contents were extracted, their microhardness was measured and quantitative analysis of microstructure was conducted. Obtained results allowed to state that with increasing content of boron the amount of graphite precipitates decreases, the amount of pearlite precipitates increases, the shape of graphite precipitates deteriorates and hardness increases. It is also planned to perform additional testings with boron contents between previously tested values.
