The automobile industry has shown increased interest in the replacement of steel spring with fibre glass composite leaf spring due to high strength to weight ratio. Therefore the aim of this work is to reduce the weight and low cost fabrication of complete mono composite leaf spring and mono composite leaf spring with bonded end joints. Also, general study on the analysis and design. A single leaf with variable thickness and width for constant cross sectional area of unidirectional glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) with similar mechanical and geometrical properties to the multi leaf spring, was designed, fabricated (hand- layup technique) and tested. The results showed that an spring width decreases hyperbolically and thickness increases linearly from the spring eyes towards the axle seat. The finite element results using ANSYS software showing stresses and deflections were verified with analytical and experimental results. The design constraints were stresses (Tsai-Wu failure criterion) and displacement. Compared to the steel spring, the composite spring has stresses that are much lower, the natural frequency is higher and the spring weight is nearly 85 % lower with bonded end joint and with complete eye unit.

Leaf springs are one of the oldest suspension components they are still frequently used, especially in commercial vehicles. The past literature survey shows that leaf springs are designed as generalized force elements where the position, velocity and orientation of the axle mounting gives the reaction forces in the chassis attachment positions. Another part has to be focused, is the automobile industry has shown increased interest in the replacement of steel spring with composite leaf spring due to high strength to weight ratio. Therefore, analysis of the composite material becomes equally important to study the behavior of Composite Leaf Spring. The objective of this paper is to present modeling and analysis of composite mono leaf spring (GFRP) and compare its results. Modelling is done using Pro-E (Wild Fire) 5.0 and Analysis is carried out by using ANSYS 10.0 software for better understanding.

The automobile industry has shown an increased interest in the use of composite leaf springs due to their high strength to weight ratio. The introduction of composite materials has made it possible to reduce the weight of the leaf spring without any reduction in load carrying capacity and stiffness. In this paper, the results of research on fatigue life of composite (Glass Fiber Reinforced plastic – GFRP) leaf springs are presented. Composite springs were designed in such a way that they could replace steel springs in a van.

Now-a-days it is necessary to conserve natural resources, economize energy and weight reduction. Weight reduction of vehicle has become the main issue in Automobile Industries. It can be achieved by introduction of better material, design optimization and better manufacturing process. The Automobile Industry has interest for replacement of Steel Leaf Spring with Composite Leaf Spring. Composite Material has High Strength and Stiffness to Weight Ratio. The Objective is to compare the Stresses, Deformation, Elastic Strain and Weight of Composite Leaf Spring with that of Steel Leaf Spring. The Material Selected is Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer is used against Conventional Steel. The Leaf Spring was modelled in CATIA and analysis done in ANSYS Software.

Reducing weight while increasing or maintaining strength of products is getting to be highly important research issue in this modern world. Composite materials are one of the material families which are attracting researchers and being solutions of such issue. In this paper we describe design and analysis of polymer composite leaf spring. The objective is to compare the stresses, deformations and weight saving of composite leaf spring with that of steel leaf spring. The Automobile Industry has great interest for replacement of steel leaf spring with that of composite leaf spring, since the composite materials has high strength to weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. The material selected was glass fibre reinforced polymer (E-glass/epoxy) and is used against conventional steel. The design parameters can be selected and analysed with the objective of minimizing weight of the composite leaf spring as compared to the steel leaf spring.

The composite materials are replacing the traditional materials because oftheir superior properties such as high tensile strength, low thermal expansion, high strength to weight ratio, low cost, lightweight, high specific modulus, renewability and biodegradability which are the most basic & common attractive features of composites that make them useful for industrial applications. The developments of new materials are on the anvil and are growing day by day. The efforts to produce economically attractive composite components have resulted in several innovative manufacturing techniques currently being used in the composites industry. Generally, composites consist of mainly two phases i.e., matrix and fiber. In this study, woven roving mats (E-glass fiber orientation (-45°/45°,0°/90°, - 45°/45°),UD450GSM)were cut in measured dimensions and a mixture of Epoxy Resin (EPOFINE-556, Density-1.15gm/cm3), Hardener (FINE HARDTM 951, Density- 0.94 gm/cm3) and Acetone [(CH3)2CO, M= 38.08 g/mol] was used to manufacture the glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite by hand lay-up method. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, SEM analysis, hardness test, density tests are evaluated.

The automobile industry is presently focusing on processing of advanced steels with superior strength–ductility combination and lesser weight as compared to conventional high-strength steels. Advanced high-strength steels are a new class of materials to meet the need of high specific strength while maintaining the high formability required for processing, and that too at reasonably low cost. First and second generation of advanced high-strength steels suffered from some limitations. First generation had high strength but low formability while second generation possessed both strength and ductility but was not cost effective. Amongst the different types of advanced high-strength steels grades, dual-phase steels, transformation-induced plasticity steels, and complex phase steels are considered as very good options for being extended into third generation advanced high-strength steels. The present review presents the various processing routes for these grades developed and discussed by different authors. A novel processing route known as quenching and partitioning route is also discussed. The review also discusses the resulting microstructures and mechanical properties achieved under various processing conditions. Finally, the key findings with regards to further research required for the processing of advanced high-strength steels of third generation have been discussed.

Steel is used in construction industry due to its hardness and tensile strength. Cold formed steel is type of steel which is manufactured at lower temperature. Cold form steel became more popular in twentieth century in construction industry due to its high strength to weight ratio and post-buckling strength. The purpose of this study is to study the behavior of cold-formed steel sections of different shapes but of same cross sectional area for compressive loading. Effect of lips within same cross sectional area, effect of perforation and shape stiffener is evaluated on different sections as channel section, Z section and hat section. Eigen value buckling analysis was carried out to on twelve different models to obtain the buckling load and failure pattern. ANSYS WORKBENCH software was used for numerical simulation of sections. I.S. 801:1975 has been taken under consideration wherever required. Based upon the results, optimum section in each of cases as with lips, without lips and perforated amongst all three sections is suggested. Effect of shape stiffeners provided by previous researcher P. Manikandan on solid sections is evaluated to check its suitability with perforated sections.

This paper presents an experimental study on the development of biocomposite material by using sawdust (SD) and rice husk (RH). The use of composite in the present production has increased dramatically since the 1970’s. Traditional material like aluminum, steel, iron and copper etc. may be easily replaced by using this classical biocomposites. The tensile test, hardness and tear resistance test were conducted in a Universal testing machine as per ASTM D638, ASTM D2240 and ASTM D1004 standard, respectively. Although commercial industries have increasingly been concerned with the low cost, light weight and eco-friendly material, the biocomposite material has also a great potential for reduced production cost and low maintenance which have proven to be a main factor in a push towards recycled biocomposites. In this paper we have fabricated a biocomposite model from materials like sawdust, rice husk. The main reason to use biocomposites is that they are more economical and have high strength to weight ratio compared to glass fibers. Hence fabricated material can be used for various applications.

Aluminium Matrix Composites are extensively used due to their desirable properties like low weight, low cost, high strength to weight ratio, good corrosion resistance, good thermal conductivity and high stiffness. Their applications are diversified in production, thermal, marine and automobile industries. Aluminium is extensively used in ships, aircrafts, cars, electrical wires and household utensils because it is abundant in nature. In the present study, Aluminium alloy Al6061 Hybrid Composites reinforced with Boron carbide and Coconut shell ash are fabricated to replace the individual Aluminium alloy Al6061. For that various tests to determine properties such as strength, hardness, wear and corrosion resistance are conducted on composite samples which make them fit to be used in aircraft window frames by reviewing various literatures. In addition to above, machinability analysis is performed on all the specimens and their surface roughness is measured. Based on the results obtained, we can come to a conclusion that the aluminium composite has superior properties than individual Al6061 alloy.
