Leaf springs are one of the oldest suspension components they are still frequently used, especially in commercial vehicles. The past literature survey shows that leaf springs are designed as generalized force elements where the position, velocity and orientation of the axle mounting gives the reaction forces in the chassis attachment positions. Another part has to be focused, is the automobile industry has shown increased interest in the replacement of steel spring with composite leaf spring due to high strength to weight ratio. Therefore, analysis of the composite material becomes equally important to study the behavior of Composite Leaf Spring. The objective of this paper is to present modeling and analysis of composite mono leaf spring (GFRP) and compare its results. Modelling is done using Pro-E (Wild Fire) 5.0 and Analysis is carried out by using ANSYS 10.0 software for better understanding.

The automobile industry has shown an increased interest in the use of composite leaf springs due to their high strength to weight ratio. The introduction of composite materials has made it possible to reduce the weight of the leaf spring without any reduction in load carrying capacity and stiffness. In this paper, the results of research on fatigue life of composite (Glass Fiber Reinforced plastic – GFRP) leaf springs are presented. Composite springs were designed in such a way that they could replace steel springs in a van.

The automobile industry has shown increased interest in the replacement of steel spring with fibre glass composite leaf spring due to high strength to weight ratio. Therefore the aim of this work is to reduce the weight and low cost fabrication of complete mono composite leaf spring and mono composite leaf spring with bonded end joints. Also, general study on the analysis and design. A single leaf with variable thickness and width for constant cross sectional area of unidirectional glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) with similar mechanical and geometrical properties to the multi leaf spring, was designed, fabricated (hand- layup technique) and tested. The results showed that an spring width decreases hyperbolically and thickness increases linearly from the spring eyes towards the axle seat. The finite element results using ANSYS software showing stresses and deflections were verified with analytical and experimental results. The design constraints were stresses (Tsai-Wu failure criterion) and displacement. Compared to the steel spring, the composite spring has stresses that are much lower, the natural frequency is higher and the spring weight is nearly 85 % lower with bonded end joint and with complete eye unit.

Reducing weight while increasing or maintaining strength of products is getting to be highly important research issue in this modern world. Composite materials are one of the material families which are attracting researchers and being solutions of such issue. In this paper we describe design and analysis of polymer composite leaf spring. The objective is to compare the stresses, deformations and weight saving of composite leaf spring with that of steel leaf spring. The Automobile Industry has great interest for replacement of steel leaf spring with that of composite leaf spring, since the composite materials has high strength to weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. The material selected was glass fibre reinforced polymer (E-glass/epoxy) and is used against conventional steel. The design parameters can be selected and analysed with the objective of minimizing weight of the composite leaf spring as compared to the steel leaf spring.

In the quest to conserve natural resources and economic energy. Weight reduction has been the focus of auto-manufactures and the aerospace industry in the present day. Weight reduction can be archived primarily by introducing better design optimization, better material, and improved manufacturing processes. This approach by introducing composite materials into automobile industries, which has high strength to weight ratio and excellent corrosive resistance, can fulfil the requirement. This review paper investigates the use of composite materials in the design of leaf springs for automotive vehicles. The paper underscores the suitability of composite materials for leaf spring in automobiles and develops a new leaf spring design that optimizes weight reduction and strength. The review provides details regarding previous efforts conducted on the design of leaf springs while outlining the knowledge gap areas. This review commences with an introduction to leaf springs and a brief history of their development. Followed by the properties that make an excellent leaf spring, this helps narrow down the information required for further developments providing avenues for possible future research.

The paper handles the fatigue and failing analysis of serial shot-peened leaf springs of cumbersome vehicles emphasizing on the impact of shot peening on fatigue life, coping with automotive leaf springs, the shot peening method turns into an important step in production. In the situation of leaf spring suspensions, however, asystematic research of the effect of shot peening about fatigue life isstill required. Experimental stress-life curves are determined with the aid of the usage of investigating clean specimen subjected to shot peening. those test consequences are as compared to corresponding ones identified from cyclic three-point test on shot peened serial leaf springs in order to show the influence of applied heat treatment and shot peening approach on fatigue existence of high-strength used to get leaf spring manufacturing, reliant on the load level. Analyses are performed to explain the effects resulting from shot peening practice on the surface features of the high-strength spring steel under examination. The evaluation of fatigue results shows that almost no life improvement due to production highlighting the importance for mutual variation in parameters of shot peening and thermal treatment so that there is sufficient progress in life

One of the oldest suspension components that are still in use, especially in commercial vehicles, is leaf springs. Due to high strength to weight ratio, the automobile industries have shown interest in replacing steel springs with composite leaf springs. This work is carried out on multi leaf springs having nine leaves, used in commercial vehicle. A Finite element approach for analysis of a multi leaf springs using ANSYS software is carried out. The model is generated using solid works and imported in ANSYS. The material of the leaf springs is 65Si7 (SUP9), composite leaf springs and hybrid leaf springs. Fatigue analysis of leaf springs is carried out for steel leaf springs, and Static analysis for steel leaf springs, composite leaf springs and hybrid leaf springs.

Automobile industries have shown more interest for the replacement of conventional steel leaf spring with that of the composite leaf spring due to its high strength to weight ratio. The objective of the work is to carry out computer aided design and analysis of composite (Glass fiber reinforced plastic) leaf spring and conventional steel leaf spring by considering certain parameters like stress, deflection and strain energy with similar design considerations and loading conditions. The material of the conventional leaf spring is 65Si7 and composite leaf spring is S2-Glass\Epoxy. The CAD model of the leaf spring is modeled in Pro-E and the numerical analysis is carried out using finite element analysis, ANSYS 14. Stress, deflection and strain energy results of both steel and composite leaf spring are obtained and compared. The result shows that the composite leaf spring has maximum strain energy than conventional steel leaf spring and weight of the composite leaf spring is nearly reduced up to 85% compared with steel material.

Increasing competition and innovation in automobile sector tends to modify the existing products or replace old products by new and advanced material products. A suspension system of vehicle is also an area where these innovations are carried out regularly. Now days the automobile Industry has shown much interest in using Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) components replacing conventional steel components due to its “high strength to low weight” ratio. Therefore replacement the steel open coil suspension springs (in heavy automobiles) with Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) open coil springs with the main aim to reduce its weight and thereby reduce the fuel consumption to some extent. A semi mechanized pultrusion process (E –Glass and Epoxy Resin) and braiding process is selected for fabricating the GFRP open coil springs. It is then tested in lab to study some of the variable parameters. Keywords: Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) , Coil spring , Pultrusion
