Purpose: The study was carried out to explore the student teachers’ perceptions and experiences on school practice in terms of competence development. Methodology: Phenomenology as a design was adopted using unstructured interviews and documents review to collect data from twelve purposively selected third year student teachers as participants. Data was analyzed using the framework analysis. Findings: School practice was clearly understood by participants as a learning experience that involves putting theory into practice with the help from supervisors and senior teachers. However, it was conducted along the curriculum requirements as an assessment/examination by the university supervisors. Consequently, some challenges were faced. These included, difficulties in applying all the various methods taught by different lecturers, lack of professionalism, little feedback/conferencing with supervisors, hurried reports, limited mentorship and supervisory aspects in school practice host schools and limited materials to use among others. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The teacher preparation institutions in Uganda Makerere inclusive need to improve the general methods course to all students to cater for issues in lesson preparation, presentation, classroom management, assessment and evaluation. An interdependent relationship between the University and the SP host schools is required to promote a working relationship between the supervisors and host teachers for mentoring and supervisory aspects to student teachers. Makerere University and other teacher preparation institutions need constant professional development courses to promote professionalism among supervisors to address issues like lack of feedback/conferencing and poor supervisor-student relationships among others.

Purpose: This study explored the perceptions and experiences of student teachers on mentoring practices and competence development at Makerere University in Uganda. Methodology: Basing on the three mentoring models of mentoring developed by Twoli (2011) as the analytical lens, this study explored the mentoring practices currently existing at Makerere University, the model of mentoring the University is aligned to and how it develops Student teachers’ competences. The three mentoring models are the corporate model (traditional model), the more improved collaborative model and the emerging model of mentoring practices. Phenomenology was adopted as a qualitative research design anchored in the constructivist interpretivist paradigm. Data was collected using unstructured interviews from purposively selected twelve finalist student teachers and triangulated with review of documents and literature to cross validate the findings. Data was analyzed using the framework analysis. Findings: Makerere University is still tagged in the corporate/ traditional model of mentoring student teachers basing on the way they organize, supervise and moderate their student teachers on practicum. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Ministry of Education and Sports (MOE&S) in Uganda through the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) should include mentorship programmes as a formalized minimum standard in teacher education institutions. Universities and other teacher preparation institutions should introduce mentorship programmes for university staff and schools. The study also recommended that lecturers and senior teachers should be sensitized about the effects of relying on the traditional/corporate mentoring model through professional development courses.

The study aimed at exploring Student Teachers' Perceptions about the Teaching Practice Supervisors' role in developing their instructional practices at the University of Jordan. The sample of this study consisted of (79) students, (40) of them were specialized in Classroom Teacher Education and (39) in Childhood Education. Data was collected using a 39- item questionnaire covering four fields: instructional planning, instructional performance, classroom management and instructional evaluation. The findings of this study indicated a strong effect of the teaching practice supervisors' role. Besides, there were no significant statistical differences in the mean scores of student teachers' perceptions due to gender and interaction between gender and specialization. However, there was a significant statistical difference due to specialization.

This chapter aims to investigate the impact of reflection on freshmen pre-service English teachers' classroom practices. Specifically, it explores how the participating student teachers' perceptions influenced their instructional practices as a result of participation in reflection activities. The participants of the study were ten freshmen student teachers enrolled in the English Language Teaching undergraduate program at a foundation (non-profit private) university in Turkey. Data came from the reflections of the participating student teachers about their recently-completed 15-hour field-based experience at the pre-school level. As a part of this class reflection activity, the participants were prompted to keep a diary in one of their undergraduate courses and respond to a series of statements or questions related to their classroom observation tasks. They were also engaged in class discussions and were required to write their overall feedback based on their field-based experience. The findings of the study revealed that reflective activities helped the prospective student teachers identify their strengths and weaknesses related to classroom activities, use of materials (use of technology and visuals) and classroom management, leading to self-awareness about their understanding and application of teaching skills and strategies.

Korábbi hazai felmérések rámutattak arra, hogy a pedagógusképzésben résztvevő hallgatók képzéssel kapcsolatos elvárásai nem minden esetben teljesülnek. A jelöltek úgy érzik, az egyetemi képzés nem szentel kellő figyelmet a tanulási-tanítási folyamat hatékony irányításához szükséges szakmai kompetenciák fejlesztésére. Ezek az adatok egybecsengenek a kezdő pedagógusok kihívásaival foglalkozó hazai és nemzetközi kutatásokkal is. Kutatásunk a gyakorlóiskolák tanárképzésben betöltött szerepét és hatékonyságát vizsgálta ún. felderítő típusú esettanulmányon keresztül. A mintát az Eszterházy Károly Egyetem gyakorlóiskolai képzésében résztvevő hallgatók (N=22), az egyetemen tanító szakmódszertanos oktatók (N=16) és a gyakorlóiskolában tanító pedagógusok (N=102) alkották. Mérőeszközeink nyílt és zárt (likert-skálás, egyválasztós, többválasztós) kérdéseket tartalmazó online kérdőívek voltak. Az általuk nyert adatok segítségével leíró és matematikai statisztikai vizsgálatokat végeztünk. A nyílt kérdésekre adott válaszok elemzése tartalomelemzéssel, nyílt kódolással történt, a kategóriák megbízhatóságát intra-kódolás biztosította. Eredményeink szerint a tanárképzés hallgatók által visszajelzett hiányosságainak hátterében számos okok között az intézményen belüli és intézmények közötti szakmai együttműködés hiánya áll. A kölcsönösségen alapuló egyenrangú szakmai együttműködés gondolata sem a gyakorlóiskola pedagógusai sem pedig az egyetemi oktatók nézetrendszerében nem élvez prioritást. A csoportos gyakorlat fő célja a hallgatók egyéni tanítási képességeinek fejlesztése, ugyanakkor azok a képességek, amelyek a szakmai együttműködést tennék lehetővé, nem kapnak kellő figyelmet. Emellett a pedagógusok tanítási-tanulási folyamatra vonatkozó nézeteiben sem jelenik meg domináns fogalomként a szakmai együttműködés. Eredményeink alapján olyan javaslatokat fogalmaztunk meg, amelyek támogatják a hazai pedagógusképzés megújítását. ----- Fields which should be developed in Teacher Education in the mirror of professional cooperation ----- arlier Hungarian researches pointed out that student teachers’ expectations related to Teacher Education have not always been fulfilled. The candidates think that during their university training certain professional competences are not adequately developed. These professional competences are classroom management, supporting students with special needs and cooperation with parents. These data coincide with the results of Hungarian and international studies dealing with challenges which novice teachers have to cope with. Our research examined the role and effectiveness of practice schools in Teacher Education with a descriptive case-study. The sample consisted of student teachers doing their MA courses at Eszterházy Károly University (N=22), university instructors of subject methodology (N=16) and teachers working at the university’s practice school (N=102). Our research tools were online questionnaires containing Likert-scales and open-ended questions. The data were analysed with descriptive and mathematical statistics. The open-ended questions were content analysed with an open coding process of the answers. The reliability of our categories was provided with intra-coding. Our results showed that the one of some weaknesses of the present system is the lack of cooperation between the university and the practice school. The main goal of the school group practice is to improve candidates’ individual skills but those of enhancing collaboration are not developed adequately. Moreover, the lack of cooperation is a relevant issue among school teachers concerning their beliefs related to the teaching-learning process. On the basis of our results we formed some proposals in connection with renewing Hungarian Teacher Education. We hope that our suggestions will help change the student teachers’ group practice and form new foundations of the partnership between the university and the practice school.

Applying a modified-Delphi technique, this research study sought consensus from business education mentor teachers regarding the top three areas in which business education student teachers were prepared as well as underprepared for their roles as teachers. Further, the mentor teachers provided recommendations for business education teacher preparation programs to implement to better prepare their teacher candidates for the student teaching internship. To that end, the mentor teachers did not gain consensus on the top three areas their student teachers were most prepared. However, they did agree classroom management and working with special needs’ students were among the top three areas their student teachers were least prepared. The mentor teachers agreed business education teacher preparation programs could provide more experiences with classroom management in public schools and provide their teacher candidates with more information about the workload and commitment needed to be effective teachers.

Since the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in 1979, education has been regarded as an essential vehicle to face gender inequities. As a result, universities are increasingly recognizing the need for mainstreaming gender into education to ensure that all graduates are prepared for developing a gender-sensitive practice. With the purpose of bringing evidence of present developments in connection with current European policies, student teachers' and educators' perceptions of gender mainstreaming implementation from three education programs at the University of Alicante, Spain were explored. Findings reveal that there is a common view that gender mainstreaming has not emerged as a priority in teacher education and that institutional indifference in implementing a gender approach in teaching is a norm. The study contributes to identifying areas of need suggesting actions for making progress in gender equality training at institutional and curricular levels.

One of the most important stages in preservice teacher training is the student teaching experience. The university supervisor (US) plays an integral role in this developmental stage by maintaining a connection between the cooperating teacher, student teacher (ST), and the university. While the traditional method of observing STs has been found to be effective, universities are seeking alternative means of conducting teaching observations that alleviate time, distance, and financial constraints. One such option is virtual observation through video chat programs. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine STs’ perceptions of the effectiveness and feasibility of virtual observation versus traditional observation in physical education teacher education (PETE). Results showed STs prefer virtual observation with a PE content expert over traditional visits if the US did not have PE content expertise. STs noted technological challenges such as Wi-Fi connectivity and environmental distraction with virtual observation. Benefits of virtual observation include increased ability to hear STs’ interactions with students, improved feedback potential, less travel time, and financial savings. Results of this study suggest that while traditional on-site observation visits are preferred and ideal, virtual observation is a viable alternative when technological challenges are appropriately addressed.
