The success of Malaysian 3D animation films, Geng; The Adventure Begins (2009) and BoBoiBoy: The Movie (2016) in attracting local reception is partly due to their portrayal of the diversity of Malaysian ethnicity, traditions and moral values which the local audience may find relatable. Although these films portray modernity, the values represented are based on the traditional Malay concept of Budi re-inscribed in the characters’ personalities. The concept of Budi in this paper employs the academic study of Lim Kim Hui (2003a) and it includes my attempt to argue that this traditional asset can be re-imagined in the contemporary digital form which can be analysed through the main characters’ personalities in the selected films. Personality is one of the key principles of animation introduced by Lasseter (1987) for the 3D animation format and with it, helps shape characters to be unique and recognizable as depicted in their behaviours, habits as well as interaction with other characters. In addition, I employ Smith’s “structure of sympathy” to explain the spectator’s engagement with the fictional personalities portrayed on screen. The concept of Budi re-inscribed in characters of contemporary 3D Malaysian animation films proves that traditional values are not lost in modern times. Animation films are mostly watched by younger audiences, therefore Budi as a traditional moral concept can be sustained and disseminated to the younger generation in digital form.

The purpose of the article is to present the results of a sociological survey on the formation of spiritual and moral values of cadet youth. The object of the study was the cadets of the Faculty of Law and Engineering and Technology, whose age ranged from 18 to 22 years. The representative sample, in addition to the age and profile of the faculty, also took into account such socio-demographic characteristics as gender. The key features of the spiritual potential of future officers of the Federal Penitentiary Service are revealed, in particular, the combination of adherence to traditional values with the strengthening of individualism, their own well-being and self-development. Such an important feature of youth perception of actual reality as a certain lack of a sense of security, fear of an increase in crime, unemployment and the possibility of war is recorded. The authors note that cadets are characterized by adherence to traditional life values, one way or another intertwined with a certain increase in individualism, their own well-being and self-development, which reflects modern global and Russian trends.

In the modern, changing, uncertain world, life is becoming more and more complex and difficult. Only those who are well prepared for it will be able to function in this world. Thus, the article raises the question of whether teaching children democracy, liberation behaviour, participation, but also responsibility, is a fantasy, a fiction, or a whim, which teachers and researchers who seek, and parents who reject authoritarianism are often accused of, or whether it is a necessity of the modern times and an expression of an awareness that it is essential wisely to prepare the younger generation for life in contemporary society. In this paper the author also outlines the role of educational institutions that can and should be aware of this task and search for opportunities for the creation of conditions for the development of children’s democratic competences.

Vasily Yanovsky belongs to the younger generation of the first wave of Russian emigration. In his works, he combined the traditions of 19th-century Russian realism as well as the tendencies of Western literature in Europe. The article is an analysis of Yanovsky’s story The Second Lovein which the author shows the life in Paris from a Russian exile’s perspective. The writer gives an account of a dramatic decline in moral values in the face of poverty and loneliness by making refer-ence to the poetics of naturalism and the genre of so-called “human document”. The Orthodox faith in Yanovsky’s story becomes a source of hope for an emigrant’s survival.

What would be the future of ideal social and moral values? Will it be faded away and the old values will appear with a new nomenclature and a reversed but a parallel value structure for will appear and two contending value forces (traditional values and modern values) will be in conflict? Will the postmodern value-spell engulf our identity of humanity? Will it be human more than human? Will morality be a sin? The rise of individualism and selfish attitude thus create value hazard. This is unthinkable for our predecessors and we people. Japan, a country with globalization boom experiences such a value trauma.
