Emotional intelligence as an indicator of coping Skills among undergraduate dental students at Peshawar: a correlational study

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study is to determine correlation between emotional intelligence and academic stress. Methodology: This quantitative correlational study was conducted in Khyber College of Dentistry Peshawar. A total of 298 undergraduate dental students from first year to final year session 2015-16 of all ages and genders were included in this study. Emotional intelligence score Dental Environmental Stress were calculated using Mean and SD. A one way ANOVA & Tukey Post hoc tests were performed for Emotional Intelligence and academic stress separately to compare the mean difference between academic groups.  A spearman correlation coefficient was used to check relationship between Emotional Intelligence and academic stress with different academic levels. EI and academic stress were correlated using Pearson Correlation. Results: Out of 298 students, 98 (32.89%) were males and 200 (67.11%) were females with a male to female ratio of 2.04:1. The mean EI score of all the BDS students from first year to final year was 81.23 ± 22.8. The total mean DES score of all classes was 109.54 ± 19.5 with a trend of decreasing stress levels from first year to final year. A Pearson correlation test was run. Statistically significant (r:-.766: P Value: .001, N: 298) negative strong relationship between EI and academic stress exists. Conclusion: The gradual increase of EI from first year to final year showing the importance of teaching and learning methods which incorporate certain trends of EI in the students overall training. Introduction: Biopsy is the most accurate way to make a definitive diagnosis, based on which the prognosis and treatment plan can be determined. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of general dentists and dental students about the principles of biopsy. Materials & Methods: This descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study conducted on 188 general dentists and 93 senior dental students of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences using a questionnaire. Then data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient, T-test) in all tests, the significance level is considered 0.05). Results: The mean score of dentists’ knowledge was 4.62 ± 1.42 and, the mean score of students’ knowledge was 4.96 ± 1.77 out of 8 points. The knowledge of dentists who had participated in retraining courses was higher than that of dentists who had not attended any biopsy retraining and was statistically significant (p value > 0.001).The mean score of dentists’ attitude (39.6 ± 4.06) was higher than the students’ (37.05 ± 3.06). Conclusion: Level of knowledge and attitude of dentists and students about the principles of biopsy was moderate. Their performance was also poor and most of the dentists expressed a lack of necessary skills for not doing a biopsy. This study shows the need for educational programs related to the principles of biopsy, in the form of retraining courses and more emphasis on the student curriculum.

Background: Among all aspects of nursing care, the spiritual one is the issue that has received little attention. Having spiritual wellbeing (SWB) is a necessity to provide appropriate spiritual care. In addition to, the Emotional intelligence (EI) is one of the most important factors in social and professional success and is essential for effective nursing practice. Therefore, aim of study was evaluating the Relationship between SWB and EI among nursing students. Methods: The sample of this descriptive-analytic study consisted of 136 nursing students studying at Bam University of Medical Sciences selected by convenience sampling method. The Bradberry and Greaves 28-item EI scale, Palutzian and Ellison SWB Scale were used to assess the total score of EI and SWB. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), Pearson correlation coefficient, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA with SPSS v18. Results: The mean score of SWB and EI were 97.1±11.56 and 123.4 + 123.6, respectively. The mean score dimensions of SWB include (religious wellbeing 47.9±6.6, existential wellbeing 49.1±5.7) and dimensions EI: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management were 27.2 3 3.2, 36.2 2 5.4, 25.1 + 3.5 and 35.1 + 4.5, respectively. The majority of students have reported moderate level SWB and high level of emotional intelligence. The factors influencing their level of SWB were academic semester and age (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although the level of students' EI and SWB were at a desirable level in this study, due to the nature of nursing and the interaction between nurses and patients, providing a suitable learning environment for the development of EI is essential. Therefore, it is suggested that nursing policymakers should develop appropriate educational programs for nurses and provide curriculum for students to promote their knowledge and skills. Introduction: The prevalence of high dental anxiety varies from 2% to 30% worldwide depending on the study population, the methods applied, and the cut-off scores used. There is strong evidence that dental anxiety is associated with dental attendance; it has been reported that individuals with higher dental anxiety tend to visit the dentist irregularly, which in turn may lead to deterioration in oral health. Studies have demonstrated that dental anxiety is associated with poor self-reported and clinically assigned oral health, more decayed and missing teeth, fewer filled teeth and worse periodontal health. Dental students are the future dental doctors who will be dealing with fearful patients in future. Knowing the facts on dental anxiety will have positive impact while treating and dealing such patients. Objectives: The overall objectives of the study were to assess level of anxiety and its possible effect on prevalence of caries among dental students studying at Kathmandu medical college and Dental hospital. Specific: To access the level of anxiety among dental students of different years (from first year to final year) along it was further focused to analyse the level of anxiety among male and female dental students. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted to choose a random convenient sample. The data were collected from dental students of first year to final year studying at Kathmandu medical college dental hospital–KMCDH. A structured questionnaire based on modified dental anxiety scale was used to collect the data. Patients were examined for dental caries prevalence using decay, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index according to World Health Organisation guidelines. Results: The highest MDAS was seen among the younger batches and the mean values for MDAS declined with higher batch of dental students. The mean dental anxiety score for males was 8.9 and 15.5 for females. The difference was statistically significant the most fearful stimulus in dental clinic for both genders was local anesthetic injection, followed by drilling of teeth. Conclusion: Dental anxiety remains a significant problem for many patients of both gender and different age groups of examined students. Dental anxiety has a negative effect on oral health status by increasing the prevalence of decayed teeth. Further studies should be carried out using large random samples before generalizing this conclusion.

Rural outplacement programs have been offered by Australian universities to encourage dental students to consider rural careers. The dental curricula should be designed to provide graduates with a good understanding of oral health issues that rural oral health care workers face. Pre-outplacement perceptions of dental students on rural practice are considered imperative to review and update the outplacement programs; however, they have not been investigated in detail. An online, anonymous, voluntary survey was conducted among the first-year dental students. The responses were solicited on the level of awareness and understanding of rural oral health, intention to practice in rural locations and factors informing the appeal of rural dental practice. The mean of a seven-point Likert scale revealed that most students had some level of perceived knowledge and awareness of rural communities and oral health. Students with rural affiliation were more likely to have the intent to practise rurally after graduation (p = 0.001). For short-term rural practice, students overall expressed positive intention. Greater job opportunities were the main motivating factor, while the distance from family and friends was the main deterring factor for practising rurally. Rural affiliation influences the intent to practise rurally on graduation. The pre-outplacement perceptions, in this study, are comparable with post-outplacement observations reported in the literature.

Abstract Background Visceral leshimaniasis is a parasitic disease characterized by systemic infection of phagocytic cells and an intense inflammatory response. The progression of the disease or treatment may have an effect on hematological parameters of these patients'. Thus, the current study sought to compare the hematological profiles of visceral leishmaniasis patients before and after treatment with anti-leishmaniasis drugs. Method An institutional-based retrospective cohort study was conducted among visceral leishmaniasis patients admitted to the University of Gondar comprehensive specialized referral hospital leishmaniasis research and treatment centre between September 2013 and August 2018. Hematological profiles were extracted from the laboratory registration book before and after treatment. Data were entered to Epi-info and exported to SPSS for analysis. Descriptive statistics were summarized using frequency and percentage to present with the table. The mean, standard deviation, median, and interquartile range were used to present the data. Furthermore, using the paired t-test and the Wilcoxon Signed rank test, the mean difference for normally and non-normally distributed data was compared. Spearman and Pearson correlation analysis were used to describe the relationship between hematological parameters and various variables. A P value of 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result With the exception of the absolute neutrophil count, all post-treatment hematological parameters show a significant increase when compared to pre-treatment levels. Prior to treatment, the prevalence of anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia was 85.5, 83.4, and 75.8%, respectively, whereas it was 58.3, 38.2, and 19.2% following treatment. Furthermore, parasite load was found to have a statistically significant negative correlation with hematological profiles, specifically with white blood cell and red blood cell parameters. Conclusion According to our findings, patients with visceral leishmaniasis had improved hematological profiles after treatment. The effect of treatment on parasite proliferation and concentration within visceral organs, in which the parasite load could directly affect the patient's hematological profiles, may be associated with the change in hematological profiles.

The increase self-regulation learning has an important role related to academic stress management. First-year students are faced with various academic rules and demands that cause first year students to be stressed. This research analyze the correlation between self-regulation learning and academic stress of first-year students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Jember. This research method is a cross-sectional study of 126 first-year students using cluster random sampling techniques. Bivariate analysis using Kendall tau b correlation (α <0.05 CI = 95%). The research instruments used were Self-Regulated Learning (Cronbach Alpha = 0.864) and Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (Cronbach Alpha = 0.849). The result of Kendall tau b correlation test results show p-value 0.015 (α < 0.05) and t = - 0.150. This study found that self-regulation learning correlated to academic stress first-year students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Jember. The correlation results showed a negative relationship direction with very weak strength, the higher self-regulation learning, the lower level of perceived academic stress. From the results and conclusions, researcher hopes that of first-year nursing faculty students can make more efforts to improve self-regulation learning process as an effort to deal with various problems during the lecture period.

Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) has caused a serious threat to people’s mental health causing psychosomatic disorders such as panic disorder, anxiety, and depression. Aim: To find out the correlation between the occurrence of psychosomatic disorders and age during the COVID-19 lockdown phase. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted in Department of Physiotherapy at RK University, Rajkot, Gujarat, India. Males and females of age ≥21 years, with an ability to understand and fill Google form were recruited for the study. The subjects were divided into four groups according to age 21-34 years, 35-54 years, 55-64 years, and 65 years and older. There were 250 participants in each group. The subjects were asked to fill the COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI). Data were analysed by using software Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 20. The normality of data was checked by the Shapiro Wilk test. Data followed parametric type so; Pearson correlation test was applied to find out the correlation between age and CPDI score. Results: The mean age of the population was 49.24±18.14 years. The mean CPDI scale scores were 27.572, 31.948, 31.364, and 35.328, respectively from groups 1 to 4. There was a significant positive correlation (p-value=0.031) in group 4, while no significance was found in group 1 (p-value=0.074), group 2 (p-value=0.067), and group 3 (p-value=0.062) Conclusion: There was a significant positive correlation between age and psychosomatic disorder occurrence in the geriatric age group (65 years and older) in the Rajkot city.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a syndrome observed in some patients with cirrhosis, with depressed level of consciousness. Lactulose as well as lactitol has been used in the treatment of HE. Lactitol is comparable to lactulose in the treatment of HE with fewer side effects and better tolerated. However, literature showed equal efficacy of both drugs. So we conducted this trial to find better drug to implement its use in future. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of lactulose and lactitol in patients with acute hepatic encephalopathy. Study Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Setting: Department of Medicine OPD and Emergency (East, West, North, South), Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Period: 6 Months June 2017 to Dec 2017. Material & Methods: 570 patients were included through non-probability, consecutive sampling after informed consent. Initial grade of HE was assessed and patients were randomly divided in two groups by using lottery method i.e. lactulose or lactitol. Patients were admitted to ward for management and kept under observation for 5 days. After 5 days, HE grades was measured again, then improvement in grade of HE (effectiveness) was measured. All data was entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 21.0. Chi-square was applied to compare both groups for effectiveness taking p-value≤0.05 as significant. Results: In this study the mean age of the patients was 44.22 ±11.81 years, the male to female ratio of the patients was 2.4:1. The mean duration of the cirrhosis of the patients was 3.73±1.61 months. In our study the effectiveness was achieved in 538 (94.39%) patients, out of which 263 cases were from lactulose group and 275 were from lactitol group and the difference was significant (p<0.0.5). Conclusion: Our study results concluded that Lactitol is better choice for the treatment of patients with acute hepatic encephalopathy as compared to lactulose. More efficacy was achieved in lactitol group patients than in lactulose group patients.

Objectives: To compare Tamsulosin versus ESWL for lower ureteric stonesexpulsion. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: Outpatient Department ofUrology at Services Hospital, Lahore. Period: January 2015 to December 2015. Material& Methods: Total 50 patients were enrolled in study. Patients were divided into 2 groups.In group A, 25 patients received daily oral treatment of 0.4mg Tamsulosin for 28 days, andin group B, 25 patients were treated with ESWL. A stone-free condition, was defined as thecomplete absence of any stone based on plain abdominal X-rays observed and during followupvisits at the time of treatment of stone was noted. Results: The mean age of the patientswere recorded as 33.20±9.23 years. There were 40(80%) males and 10(20%) females with maleto female ratio of 4:1. Out of 50 patients, 16(32%) presented with hematuria, 3(6%) had feverwhile 31(62%) appeared with no complication status. Out of 50 patients, 21(42%) presentedwith expulsion time 08-14 days in which 14(28%) were from tamsulosin group and 07(14%)were from ESWL group, similarly 19(38%) patients appeared with expulsion time of 15-28 daysin which 10(20%) were from tamsulosin group and 09(18%) were from ESWL group. Statisticallythere is insignificant difference between the groups i.e. p-value=0.28 Ns. Conclusion: Thisstudy suggests that the tamsulosin helps in the earlier clearance of stone fragments andreduces the complications as compared to ESWL.

The objective of this study was finding the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement. 384 students from secondary and high secondary school participated in this study. A significant relationship was found between academic achievement and Emotional Intelligence with the p-value = 0.01. The mean difference in emotional intelligence score of the students who secured high academic scores were found high. i.e. 58.57 as compared to the mean of emotional intelligence score of the students who secured low academic scores i.e. 56.93. A significant correlation was also found between Emotional Intelligence and academic scores(r=0.130). The results of the study suggest that higher emotional intelligence leads to better educational outcomes. An individual with a high level of Emotional Intelligence could have a strong, stable, and positive state of emotional well-being. Students who have a positive state of emotional wellbeing are more open to new experiences, which research has shown to lead to more learning.
