Blood of juvenile rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) exposed to lead in water showed increasing lead concentrations as pH of the test water decreased from 10.0 to 6.0. A decrease in pH by 1.0 unit from any reference pH resulted in an increase of blood lead by a factor of 2.1. Since sublethal lead toxicity is related to uptake, these results suggest that toxicity increases as pH decreases. Control experiments indicated that reactions of lead with inorganic constituents of the test water were complete within 3 h and that blood lead was at equilibrium with water lead within 48 h. Therefore, at the time of blood sampling in the pH experiment, both lead complexation processes in the exposure system, plus lead uptake and release from the blood, were at equilibrium. The effects of calcium hydrogen phosphate on lead (Pb) uptake by cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) were investigated in a growth chamber experiment coupled with atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and colorimetry analyses. Cowpea seeds were planted and harvested in soil samples treated with Pb+2 added as lead nitrate at the rates of 0, 1000 and 3000 mg/kg followed by calcium hydrogen phosphate (CaHPO4) at 0, 10, 50 and 250 mg/kg. Increases in shoot yield brought about by phosphate fertilization were observed to oppress the shoot lead concentration as a result of growth dilution, where the actual amount of lead in shoots was unaffected by phosphate treatment. This work revealed that there is no substantial effect on lead uptake by cowpea, as a result of phosphate fertilization. Therefore, phosphate fertilization is a good means of cowpea production with minimal lead uptake and hence safe for human consumption

In today’s world, environment is exposed to lead due to various anthropogenic activities. It adversely affects plants as well as microorganisms by disturbing soil health and fertility. Bioremediation is a technique used to sequester heavy metals from the contaminated soil and it can be used to decontaminate the polluted soil. Lead-tolerant plant health promoting rhizobacteria (PHPR) can be used to enhance the efficacy of lead remediation. Lead uptake can be enhanced through bacteria by modifying root structure, secreting metal sequestering molecules in rhizosphere and alleviating lead induced phytotoxicity. For this purpose, lead-resistant auxin-producing bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of some plants. These auxin-producing lead-tolerant bacteria were used to treat Zea mays both in the presence and absence of lead-stress under laboratory conditions and its impact on plant growth and biochemical parameters of Zea mays were analysed.

Lead biosorption byKlebsiellasp. 3S1 isolated from a wastewater treatment plant was investigated through a Rotatable Central Composite Experimental Design. The optimisation study indicated the following optimal values of operating variables: 0.4 g/L of biosorbent dosage, pH 5, and 34°C. According to the results of the kinetic studies, the biosorption process can be described by a two-step process, one rapid, almost instantaneous, and one slower, both contributing significantly to the overall biosorption; the model that best fits the experimental results was pseudo-second order. The equilibrium studies showed a maximum lead uptake value of 140.19 mg/g according to the Langmuir model. The mechanism study revealed that lead ions were bioaccumulated into the cytoplasm and adsorbed on the cell surface. The bacterium  Klebsiellasp. 3S1 has a good potential in the bioremoval of lead in an inexpensive and effective process.
