The concept of integrated marketing communications (IMC) was developed in the early 1990s and has gained significant interest from academics and practitioners alike. Although the concept is widely known for its theme of achieving consistency in messages sent, integration of marketing communications with corporate strategy is arguably the defining construct of IMC. In contrast to the attention the concept of IMC has achieved, integration of marketing communications with corporate strategy is rarely achieved. Correspondingly, there is a gap in understanding why such successful integration remains scarce. In order to support closure of this knowledge gap, the aim of this research is to support the successful implementation of IMC at a strategic level through the development of a conceptual model that is capable of helping to overcome barriers to successful integration. The objectives of the study are therefore to explore how decisions about marketing communication activities are taken and how customer knowledge generated through marketing communication activities is used to inform business strategy decisions. The knowledge needed to fulfil the research aim was generated from a case study setting of a global company, operating a decentralised organisational structure in the healthcare industry. The resulting research findings were grouped into three thematic areas which are termed efficiency, consistency, and relationship. These thematic areas, if unmanaged, may inhibit company-wide alignment of marketing communications activities with business strategy. This thesis contributes towards facilitating integration of marketing communications with strategy by providing a conceptual model which is termed ‘integration areas’. This model is based on the idea of using guiding principles for aligning marketing communication activities throughout a company. The integration area concept helps in the development of these guiding principles by providing thematic areas which should be considered in the course of this development so that integration of marketing communication activities with business strategy is achieved. Such support for guiding principles development for the purpose of achieving strategic integration of marketing communication activities has not yet been provided.

Integrated marketing communications are developing, with IMC approaches to communication with consumers seeing further enhancements in the scientific literature. However, in order to reach the marketing targets, a variety of IMC tools may be used in combination when implementing marketing activities. Despite each IMC tool in itself being highly distinctive, they all depend on each other in the creation of product consumption value and the enhancement of economic, communicational and social benefits. Purpose of the paper: The goal of the research is to assess the integrated marketing communications used in the marketing strategy of Latvian food retail chains. Methodology/methods: The following scientific research methods are used in the research study: analytical, comparative, graphical, statistical, observatory and interrogative. The research focuses on the Latvian food retail sector, with leading specialists from all Latvian food retail chains polled. The object of the research is Latvian food retail chains, and the subject of the research is integrated marketing communication as a set of tools. Findings: The results of the research are of both theoretical and practical value, as it confirmed the hypothesis that a complex use of IMC promotes a long-term relationship among all stakeholders of the selling and buying process. The authors have collected and classified IMC tools and, based on the results of the research, drawn up a conceptual model of integrated marketing communications.

PurposeBusiness wargames represent an alternative approach to challenge organisations to uncover internal capabilities through competitive actions designed to counteract external threats and address strategic mismatches. Internal capabilities uncovered as a result of actions taken during a competitive wargame aims to replicate market conditions found in competitive industries. These outcomes are difficult to achieve using many popular strategy design methods. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of war game-style activities in formulating corporate strategy that incorporate the natural behaviors of the leadership team in creating strategic plans.Design/methodology/approachUsing a case study from the banc assurance industry, the authors review a wargame process composed of two competing teams; the banc assurance organisation and an unincorporated joint venture between a banking institution and an insurance company. The goal of each entity was to develop strategy to improve both customer satisfaction and market share at the expense of each other given a finite set of resources. Success was judged using a simple set of metrics defined by both a consumer team and an independent umpire.FindingsConsumers of financial services are price sensitive and highly brand loyal. Unwillingness to switch brands to a prevailing competitor or other emerging (Fintech) institution persists to a threshold of a price and/or value differential of 15 to 20 per cent. The results highlight potential deficiencies in the proposed banc assurance strategy through the observation of customer behaviours and inefficient resource use.Originality/valueThe wargame approach conducted in a realistic landscape revealed internal capabilities not otherwise evident. The impact of authentic human behaviours in setting business strategy was captured which is very difficult to replicate using more formal scenario analysis and planning.
