The spawning of Paracentrotus lividus has been determined on the basis of the annual gonad index cycle at three sites in the Algiers area presenting low, intermediate and strong hydrodynamism. Three biotopes (Posidonia oceanica beds, rocky substrate with photophilous algae and overgrazed rocky substrate) and two depths (1–3 m and 6–10 m) were considered at these sites, the sex-ratio was always strongly in favour of females (2:1 to 3:1). In all sites but one, there were marked differences in the gonad index and the spawning period between sites; the gonad index reached its maximum value at the site with the weakest hydrodynamism, and the minimum value at the site with the strongest hydrodynamism. Spawning took place in April–May and August–September at the site with the weakest hydrodynamism, in April–June and October–December at the site with intermediate hydrodynamism and only in winter at the site with maximum hydrodynamism. The coexistence, on regional scale, of these reproductive cycles might enable Paracentrotus lividus to compensate the mortality during planktonic larval phase by the fact that spawning of this sea urchin occurred in all seasons.

Collections of Uca (Minuca) panamensis were made along the pacific coastal area of Colombia in order to determinate the distribution of this specie and its relation to the rocky substrate. Also a brief report of its biology is presented.


Purpose. To study the state of macrozoobenthos in the Zmiinyi Island coastal zone in 2016-2017. Methods. Standard methods of macrozoobenthos sampling, determination, number and biomass estimation. Results. Results of analysis of biodiversity, structural characteristics and taxonomic composition of macrozoobenthos in the Zmiinyi Island coastal zone have been presented. Seasonal dynamics of its number and biomass has been studied. Assessment of marine environment quality has been performed based on the metrics of macrozoobenthos. Conclusions. Altogether, 132 taxa of benthic invertebrates belonging to 10 biggest taxonomic groups of macrozoobenthos have been identified in the Zmiinyi Island coastal zone in 2016-2017. Analysis of taxonomic composition identified 1 species of Porifera (0.8%), 7 taxa of Cnidaria (5.3%), 3 taxa of Platyhelminthes (2.3%), 1 taxon of Nemertea (0.8%), 3 taxa of Bryzoa (2.3%), 52 taxa of Annelida (39.4%), 25 taxa of Mollusca (18.9%), 35 taxa of Arthropoda (265%), 2 taxa of Echinodermata (1.4%) and 3 taxa of Chordata (2.3%). Out of 132 macrozoobenthos taxa 6 are enlisted in the Red Data Book of Ukraine and 8 – in the Black Sea Red Data Book. Macrozoobenthos number varied from 0.317х104 (27.11.2016) to 16.943х104 (19.08.2016) ind/m2 on soft substrate and from 2.683х104 (17.05.2016) to 30.725х104 (19.08.2016) ind/m2 on rocky substrate; biomass varied from 0.017 (17.05.2017) to 34.857 (19.08.2016) kg/m2 on soft substrate and from 1.531 (27.11.2016) to 46.147 (19.08.2016) kg/m2 on rocky substrate. Maximal development of benthos was registered in summer period. Quality of marine environment on the AMBI and M-AMBI indices was assessed as Good in 21 cases out of 23 and as Moderate in 2 cases 2 out of 23. Mean values of AMBI and M-AMBI indices for different seasons made respectively: May, 2016 – 2.56 and 0.59; August, 2016 – 1.86 and 0.69; November, 2016 – 1.70 and 0.71; June, 2017 – 1.87 and 0.75.

The dietary compositions of two sit-and-wait lizard species, Hemidactylus mabouia and Phyllopezus pollicaris, which co-occur over rocky substrate and vertical rock walls in a perianthropic area of western Brazil, were described. Both species showed a generalist feeding pattern, feeding mainly on insects. The most frequent prey items in the diet of P. pollicaris were Coleoptera, Araneae and Homoptera whereas the most important were Coleoptera and Homoptera, respectively. For H. mabouia the most frequent prey items were Araneae followed by Coleopterae and Hemiptera, whereas the most important items were H. mabouia followed by Formicidae and Hemiptera. Our identification into broader prey-types categories (i.e., order or family-level) suggests that some degree of food resource partitioning may occur, possibly through the occupation of different temporal niches.

A study of territorial behaviour of the cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus, was carried out in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, in 1977 and 1978. Cunners that overwinter in a torpid state were active only from May to late October of both years. Large males established territories prior to the midsummer spawning season and territories were defended throughout and after that season. Territory size ranged from 16.1 to 74.3 m2 on rocky substrate at depths of 0.7 to 13 m and did not vary significantly with either the size of the resident fish or the degree of intraspecific aggression it exhibited. Nonterritorial males were generally smaller than territorial males and were vigorously excluded from their territories. Only territorial males exhibited interspecific aggression, which was most frequent toward Pholis gunnellus. Territorial females were present in the peripheral areas of some males' territories and were aggressive toward other females. Tagging indicated that most males and some females defend the same territory from year to year, and that territory size remains relatively constant. The proportions of territorial and nonterritorial fish, of either sex, in the population are unknown. The primary function of territorial behaviour in T. adspersus may be the provision of a spawning site from which potential rivals are excluded.

Spatial distribution patterns of two sessile gastropods belonging to Vermetidae, Vermetus triquetrus and Dendropoma petraeum, were studied in June 2001 in north-eastern Sardinia (Mediterranean Sea, Italy). Density of individuals was assessed within quadrats positioned on a shallow (0·1–1 m depth) rocky substrate of different lithological types (limestone and granite), at a hierarchy of spatial scales. Density of D. petraeum is significantly greater on granite than on limestone, while V. triquetrus does not show any differences related to rock type.

Gunung Kidul is one of the districts in Yogyakarta that has a long coastline with coral substrate and white sand. One of the beaches with coral and rocky substrates is Indrayanti Beach. The rocky substrate provides unique characteristics for the life of marine organisms in the intertidal zone. Gastropods is one of the seven classes in the Mollusc phylum. Gastropods are found mostly in the sea and fresh water, especially in the intertidal zone of beach. The aim of this study is to identify gastropods that found in the Indrayanti intertidal zone and classifying each species. The method of this study is observation and sampling techniques with accidental sampling at low tide. Data analysis is descriptive based on morphological characteristics of each species. Based on the results of this study, there are 5 sub-classes, 9 orders, 2 Superfamily, 21 families, 35 genera and 72 species. Sub-classes found are heterobranchia, caenogastropods, neritimorpha, vestigastropods, and patelogastropods. The highest number of species found in the caenogastropod subclass was 32 species (44% of the total species) which were dominated by the order of neogastropod.
