Active Vibration Control of Automotive Suspension System using Fuzzy Logic Algorithm

This study details an efficient fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to improve the performance of active automotive suspension system. A comparison between passive and FLC active suspensions is performed. A mathematical model of automotive active suspension has six degrees of freedom and two input forces generated by two separate actuators are solved using Matlab Simulink. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller under random road disturbance, several performance criteria are assessed based on the dynamic response of the half automotive suspension system. Simulation results of the active suspension system based on the fuzzy logic clearly have been provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the FLC under different road conditions and confirmed that fuzzy logic is very effective for enhancing ride comfort and stability of the vehicle.

This paper uses a quarter model of an automobile having passive and semiactive suspension systems to develop a scheme for an optimal suspension controller. Semi-active suspension is preferred over passive and active suspensions with regard to optimum performance within the constraints of weight and operational cost. A fuzzy logic controller is incorporated into the semi-active suspension system. It is able to handle nonlinearities through the use of heuristic rules. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is applied to determine the optimal gain parameters for the fuzzy logic controller, while maintaining within the normalized ranges of the controller inputs and output. The performance of resulting optimized system is compared with different systems that use various control algorithms, including a conventional passive system, choice options of feedback signals, and damping coefficient limits. Also, the optimized semi-active suspension system is evaluated for its performance in relation to variation in payload. Furthermore, the systems are compared with respect to the attributes of road handling and ride comfort. In all the simulation studies it is found that the optimized fuzzy logic controller surpasses the other types of control.

In this paper, fuzzy logic is used to control active suspension of one-quarter car model. The main role of a car suspension system is to improve the ride comfort and to better the handling property. It usually consists of a spring and a damper to improve the properties of suspension system. The fuzzy logic method is one of the most active research and developments areas on artificial and intelligence at the present time, particularly in the automobile industry. One quarter of car if modeled by springs, masses, dampers and force actuator and the state space equations are derived by lagrangian method. The ride comfort is improved by means of the reduction of the body acceleration caused by the car body when road disturbance from uneven road surfaces, pavement point etc. act on the tires of running car. Here, a logic fuzzy controller is designed in which, the number of rule bases are reduced in comparison with some traditional one which have been introduced in other papers. At the end, a comparison of active suspension fuzzy control and traditional passive suspension is shown using MATLAB simulations. Results show that, active suspension improves the ride comfort by reducing acceleration, compared with the performance of passive suspension.

This paper propose the study of automobile active suspension system for the purpose of improving ride comfort to passengers and simultaneously improving the stability of vehicle by reducing vibration effects on suspension system. A fuzzy-logic-based control for vehicle-active suspension is suggested. The vehicle vibration and disturbance are reduced considerably with a fuzzy logic controller, to enhance comfort in riding faced with uncertain road terrains. A quarter-car active suspension system is controlled to reduce the vertical acceleration, suspension stroke and tire deflection. Simulation studies clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the fuzzy logic controller for active suspension systems. The performance of the fuzzy logic controller under variations in the suspension component characteristics are also studied and are found to give reasonably good responses.

Nonlinear active suspension systems are very popular in the automotive applications. They include nonlinear stiffness and nonlinear damping elements. One of the types of damping element is a magneto-rheological fluid based damper which is receiving increased attention in the applications to the automotive suspension systems. Latest trends in suspension systems also include electronically controlled systems which provide advanced system performance and integration with various processes to improve vehicle ride comfort, handling and stability. A control bifurcation of a nonlinear system typically occurs when its linear approximation loses stabilizability. These control bifurcations are different from the classical bifurcation where qualitative stability of the equilibrium point changes. Any nonlinear control system can also exhibit control bifurcations. In this paper, control bifurcations of the nonlinear active suspension system, modeled as a two degree of freedom system, are analyzed. It is shown that the system looses stability via Hopf bifurcation. Parametric control bifurcation analysis is conducted and results presented to highlight the significance of the design of control system for nonlinear active suspension system. A framework for the design of feedback using the parametric analysis for the control bifurcations is proposed and illustrated for the nonlinear active suspension system.

The study deals with the light passenger vehicle suspension system design to improve the ride quality. The fuzzy logic control approach is applied to the half car suspension system model by adjusting the control parameters and properties using online adaptation with a minimized cost function and reduced hardware complexity. The performance of resulting model is tested under the influence of trapezoidal and triangular membership functions using the 9, 25 and 49 rules-set. The controller robustness is observed at different performance indices. Road excitations in the form of disturbance input are modelled as the sinusoidal function of a speed bump to reveal the transient response of the automotive body. Ultimately, the performance of active suspension system has been improved in terms of displacement and acceleration of seat, heave, pitch, and roll by the application of proposed fuzzy logic controller. Results reported that the trapezoidal shape 25 rules set membership function based fuzzy logic controller gives the best performance between the investigated systems.

Comparative performance of vehicle suspension system using passive, and semi-active control (on-off and continuous) has been carried out for a multi-axle vehicle under the source of road disturbance. Modelling and prediction for stochastic inputs from random road surface profiles has been carried out. The road surface is considered as a stationary stochastic process in time domain assuming constant vehicle speed. The road surface elevations as a function of time have been generated using IFFT. Semi active suspension gives better ride comfort with consumption of fraction of power required for active suspension. A mathematical model has been developed and control algorithm has been verified with the purpose/objective of reducing the unwanted sprung mass motions such as heave, pitch and roll. However, the cost and complexity of the system increases with implementation of semi-active control, especially in military domain. In addition to fully passive and fully semi-active a comparison has been made with partial semi-active control for a multi-axle vehicle to obviate the constraints. The time domain response of the suspension system using various control logics are obtained and compared. Simulations for different class of roads as defined in ISO: 8608 have been run and the ride comfort is evaluated and compared in terms of rms acceleration at CG in vertical direction (Z), which is the major contributor for ORV (Overall Ride Value) Measurement.

Optimal control schemes are usually employed to minimize different performance criteria of active suspension system of a vehicle such as, ride comfort and road safety. These factors are usually combined into a single quantity using proper weighting parameters that depend on the designer’s preferences. Generally, the selection of these weighting parameters is based on trial and error, which can be a time-consuming and computationally-intensive process. This paper proposes the use of an approach based on nested optimization loops to automate the selection process of these weighting parameters. The objective of the inner optimization loop is to minimize of the quadratic performance index associated with the original active suspension problem while the objective of the outer optimization loop is to minimize driver’s acceleration, for ride comfort, while maintaining both tire deflection and suspension deflection within acceptable limits. The design variables are the weighting parameters associated with the quadratic performance index used in the optimal control of active suspension. A modified form of Hooke-Jeeves algorithm is used to handle this problem while the penalty function method is used to handle the constraints. Simulation results show that this approach can improve the design process for active suspension of vehicles.

Suspension system of a vehicle is used to minimize the effect of different road disturbances for ride comfort and improvement of vehicle control. A passive suspension system responds only to the deflection of the strut. The main objective of this work is to design an efficient active suspension control for a full car model with 8-Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) using adaptive soft-computing technique. So, in this study, an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy based Sliding Mode Control (ANFSMC) strategy is used for full car active suspension control to improve the ride comfort and vehicle stability. The detailed mathematical model of ANFSMC has been developed and successfully applied to a full car model. The robustness of the presented ANFSMC has been proved on the basis of different performance indices. The analysis of MATLAB/SMULINK based simulation results reveals that the proposed ANFSMC has better ride comfort and vehicle handling as compared to Adaptive PID (APID), Adaptive Mamdani Fuzzy Logic (AMFL), passive, and semi-active suspension systems. The performance of the active suspension has been optimized in terms of displacement of seat, heave, pitch, and roll.

<p>The objective of the study is to evaluate the performance of various semi-active suspension control strategies for 8x8 multi-axle armoured vehicles in terms of comparative analysis of ride quality and mobility parameters during negotiation of typical military obstacles. Since the cost, complexity and time precludes realisation of actual system, co-simulation technique has been effectively implemented for this investigation. Co-simulation combines advanced virtual prototyping and control technology which offers a novel approach to investigate the dynamics of such complex system. The simulations for the integrated control system along with multi body model of the vehicle are carried out for the control strategies, viz. continuous sky hook control, cascade loop control and cascade loop with ride control and compared with passive suspension system. The vehicle with 8x8 configuration is run on the real world obstacle profiles, viz. step, trench, trapezoidal bump and corrugated road and the effect of control strategies on ride comfort, wheel displacement and ground reaction is presented. It is observed that cascade loop with ride control in semi-active mode offers better vehicle ride comfort while crossing the said obstacles. The improved performance parameters are achieved through stabilisation of heave, pitch and roll motions of the vehicle through outer loop and isolation of vehicle level uneven disturbances through the fuzzy logic controller employed in inner loop.</p>
