The present work aims to carry out modal analysis of orthotropic thin rectangular plate to determine its natural frequencies and mode shapes by using analytical method based on Rayleigh-Ritz energy approach. To demonstrate the accuracy of this approach, the same plate is discritisated and analyzed using the finite element method. The natural and angular frequencies were computed and determined analytically and numerically by using ABAQUS finite element code. The convergency and accuracy of the numerical solution was examined. The effects of geometrical parameters and boundary conditions on vibrations are investigated. The results obtained showed a very good agreement between the analytical approach and the numerical simulations. Also, the paper presents simulations results of testing of the plate with passive vibration control.

The transverse vibrations of a rectangular plate with the Kelvin type boundary conditions at four corners are investigated. The plate is modeled as being attached to four lumped spring-damper systems at the corners. An analytical procedure is proposed based on the modal analysis. The completely free case of the plate is first studied. The expressions for the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of the plate are obtained by utilizing the separation of variables. Then, the case in which the stiffness and the viscous damping as external forces acting at the corners of the plate is studied. Following the modal analysis procedure, the general solution for the equation of motion of the rectangular plate is derived. Some numerical results are presented.

To consider the deformation of thin rectangular plate under temperature. In this paper, the wavelet multi-scale method was used to solve the thin plate governing differential equations with four different initial or boundary conditions. An operational matrix of integration based on the wavelet was established and the procedure for applying the matrix to solve the differential equations was formulated, and got the deflection of thin rectangular plates under temperature. The result provides a theoretical reference for solving thin rectangular plate deflection in thermal environment using multi-scale approach.

Hysteresis is one of the non-linearity characteristics of the piezoelectric material. This characteristic is important to be characterized since it can affect the performance of the piezoelectric material as sensor or actuator in many applications. In this study, the model of the coupled aluminium beam with single piezoelectric patch material is constructed to investigate the hysteresis effect of the piezoelectric material to the whole beam structure. A P-876 DuraActTM type piezoelectric patch material is used in modelling of the piezoelectric actuator. Firstly, the modal analysis of the coupled beam-piezoelectric actuator is determined to get the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Then, the piezoelectric patch material is investigated in terms of actuator by given a sinusoidal voltage excitation and output in terms of deflection, stress and strain of the piezoelectric actuator are investigated. From the results, it is clear that, the coupled beam-piezoelectric material is affected by the hysteresis of the piezoelectric material and the natural frequencies of the beam structure. This characteristic is important for the piezoelectric actuator manufacturer and by providing the correction algorithm, it can improve the performance of the piezoelectric actuator for many applications.
