Abstract The design of workwear has significant effects on worker performance. However, the current workwear for coal miners in Northern China is poor in fitness and thermal comfort. In this study, new workwear (NEW) for coal miners was developed with the design features providing better cold protection and movement comfort performance, as compared with a commonly worn workwear (CON). To evaluate the effectiveness of NEW, we conducted human trials which were performed using simulated work movements (i.e., sitting, shoveling, squatting, and crawling) in a climate chamber (10°C, 75% RH). Physiological measurements and perceptual responses were obtained. The results demonstrated that the local skin temperatures at chest, scapula, thigh, and calf; mean skin temperatures,; and thermal comfort in NEW were significantly higher than those in CON. NEW also exerted an improvement in enhancing movement comfort. We conclude that NEW could meet well with the cold protective and mobility requirements.

Cabergoline is a potent inhibitor of prolactin release and a potential fertility control agent for foxes. To understand how cabergoline could behave in baits deployed for fox control, we conducted laboratory and field trials to investigate the stability of cabergoline when (1) in solution, (2) injected into a bait (deep-fried liver and Foxoff®) and (3) exposed to a range of environmental conditions, including burial. Cabergoline, dissolved in a 1% acetic acid solution, and its carboxylic acid hydrolysis product can be assayed using high-performance liquid chromatography. When stored at 4°C and at room temperature, cabergoline in solution was stable for up to 36 days. When stored under cool (≤15°C), dry conditions, cabergoline (800 µg) in commercial Foxoff® and deep-fried ox-liver baits was stable for 28 and 7 days, respectively; stability was reduced by increases in temperature (tested up to 40°C) and humidity. Recovery of cabergoline from buried baits exposed to a range of field conditions decreased rapidly in the first week, but after 56 days remained detectable at levels of 6–22% of the injected amounts. This study has important implications for baiting campaigns that use cabergoline for fox control.

New Canadian and American standards for concrete and bridges now provides guidelines for the design, production, curing, material characterization and installation of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (named UHPFRC or UHPC) on structures. However, some technical aspects require more research since fundamental knowledge about UHPC is not as complete as for normal strength concretes (NSC). Among these aspects, knowledge on the properties of UHPC produced under field conditions is scarce. The main goal of the research project was to evaluate the fresh state properties (slump flow, air content, mass density, hydration heat) and hardened state properties (elastic modulus, Poisson ratio, compressive and flexural strengths) of a UHPC subjected to various mixing temperatures (10, 20 and 30°C) and curing temperatures (10, 23 and 35°C) encountered in field conditions. The impact of mixing and curing temperatures on each property is discussed and practical information is provided to help engineers planning the UHPC curing duration and formwork stripping.

The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we present the basic principles and point out the main difficulties in writing a library supporting operations with arbitrarily large numbers. Aspects such as library structure, number representation, algorithm selection, memory management, etc., are discussed and exemplified on the most efficient libraries developed. Secondly, we present work in progress regarding the design of a new multi-precision library, MpNT. Comparisons between our library and the existing ones show that it achieves high performance.
