Objective:To evaluate the lethality profile of an infrared radiation (IR) prototype sterilizer.Method:Simulated use and D value tests were conducted with Bacillus subtilis spores American Type Culture Collection–9372. A spore suspension (1.06 ± 0.03 × 106) in 5% bovine serum albumin was air dried on stainless steel instruments. IR cycles were completed and the instruments were immersed in tryptic soy broth for 120 hours at 37°C. Direct enumeration of survivors was performed to evaluate IR death. Instrument loads contained carriers laden with spores (1.06 ± 0.3 × 106). The spores were seeded on tryptic soy agar and survivors were counted after 120 hours of incubation at 37°C.Results:All instruments exposed to IR (n = 50) were culture negative. In contrast, all unprocessed instruments (n = 30) showed B. subtilis growth. The prototype's D value was 0.56, and the death rate's slope was -1.76 (r = -0.99741; P < .0001). The 10-6 sterility assurance level was reached after 8 minutes and 40 seconds of exposure, from cold start.Conclusions:IR destroys B. subtilis spores. Instrument sterilization with IR may provide another technology for infection control.

To research the friction and wear of silicon nitride ceramic with bovine serum albumin lubricant, the tribological properties of silicon nitride ceramic against stainless steel were investigated on CETR UMT-2 under lubrication of bovine serum albumin, deionized water, physiological saline and physiological saline mixed with bovine serum albumin. The worn surfaces of silicon nitride ceramic ball and stainless steel pin were examined with a digital microscope (VHX-2000). The friction coefficients of steady state are 0.26, 0.35, 0.69 and 0.8 under bovine serum albumin, physiological saline mixed with bovine serum albumin, physiological saline and deionized water. The lowest friction coefficient of steady state is 0.26 which is under lubrication of bovine serum albumin. The highest friction coefficient is 0.8 under the lubrication of deionized water. The measured worn areas of silicon nitride ceramic balls are 1282.3μm2, 1898.6μm2, 2753.9μm2 and 3645.7μm2 under bovine serum albumin, physiological saline mixed with bovine serum albumin, physiological saline and deionized water. The smallest worn area of silicon nitride ceramic ball is 1282.3μm2 which is measured under the lubrication of bovine serum albumin. The highest worn area of silicon nitride ceramic ball is 3645.7μm2 which was measured under the lubrication of deionized water. The same wear mechanism of silicon nitride ceramic ball had been found under the lubrication of bovine serum albumin, deionized water, physiological saline and physiological saline mixed with bovine serum albumin. The depth of scratches of worn surface of silicon nitride ceramic ball lubricated with BSA is 3μm which are the shallowest.

The effects of organic material and biofilm formation on the efficacy of Suma Tab D4 chlorine tablets and Suma Bac D10 quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) against Listeria monocytogenes was determined in suspension and on stainless steel and polystyrene surfaces according to standard disinfectant test methodology. Exposure to 200 and 740 mg L-1 QAC and to 150 mg L-1 active chlorine resulted in a > 5.0 log10 CFU mL-1 and > 5.0 log10 CFU/coupon reduction of six L. monocytogenes strains within one minute, in suspension tests, and on stainless steel surfaces, respectively. Additionally, there was a reduction by as much as 5 log10 CFU/coupon or 5 log10 CFU/well of reference strains EGDe and Scott A biofilms within five minutes on stainless steel and polystyrene surfaces. Organic material, added as bovine serum albumin at 0.3% (w/v) completely prevented the inactivation of L. monocytogenes in 150 mg L-1 chlorine, while reductions of only 0.6 +- 0.1 log10 CFU mL-1 were recorded in the presence of UHT milk at 3% (v/v). In contrast, reductions of 5 log10 CFU mL-1 were recorded within one minute on exposure to 740 mg L-1 QAC in the presence of 0.3% (w/v) bovine serum albumin and within two minutes in the presence of 20 % (v/v) UHT milk. Although Suma D4 chlorine tablets and Suma Bac D10 QAC are effective listericidal agents at recommended concentrations, Suma Tab D4 chlorine efficacy against L. monocytogenes is impaired by the presence of low concentrations of organic material, while Suma Bac D10 QAC maintains its listericidal activity in high organic loads.

The Coefficient Of Friction

The friction coefficient of tribology pair between silicon nitride ceramic and stainless steel was researched with bovine serum albumin, saline and water lubricants. The coefficient of friction of silicon nitride in bovine serum albumin is lower than those in saline and water. Using digital microscope, the worn surfaces of silicon nitride and stainless steel were viewed. The groove depths of worn stainless steel surface were measured. The depth with bovine serum albumin is shallower than those in saline and water. The results showed that ceramic in bovine serum albumin has good tribological characteristic. This research provides the reference for the development of ceramic artificial joint.
