We investigated the variations of group velocity slowdown in erbium-doped optical fiber. According to the population oscillation effect, the numerical model of the group velocity slowdown was established. From the theoretical calculation, the group velocity slowdown is tunable due to the variety of steady ground state erbium ion population [Formula: see text]. To validate the effect of ion population for slow light, the experimental research was implemented via highly-doped erbium fiber.
