AbstractAim:The aim of this study was a comparison of shear bond strength (SBS) on tooth enamel of different primers combined with the adhesive paste Transbond XT.Materials and methods:Forty bovine teeth were used in order to create 40 test blocks. The blocks were divided into four groups of 10 blocks each: group A – sample primer (SP); group B – Opal Seal (OS); group C – Transbond Plus SEP (TSEP); group D – Transbond XT Primer (TXT). After surface preparation and application of the primer, respectively, two stainless steel brackets were fixed on each tooth by using Transbond XT. Accordingly, 80 brackets were debonded (n=20). Shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed by using the Student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney U test.Results:All tested groups revealed high shear bond strength in a similar size range. There were no significant differences between the groups concerning shear bond strength. The ARI scores of group C showed significantly lower ARI scores (0 and 1) than that of group D. Apart from that there was no statistical difference.Conclusion:In combination with the adhesive paste Transbond XT, all tested primers were suitable for fixing orthodontic brackets. The primers could be changed according to the clinical situation.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength, the adhesive remnant index scores, and etch surface of teeth prepared for orthodontic bracket bonding with self-etching primer and Er:YAG laser conditioning. One hundred and twenty bovine incisors were randomly divided into four groups. In Group I (Control), the teeth were conditioned with 35% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. In Group II the teeth were conditioned with Transbond Plus SEP (5 sec); III and IV were irradiated with the Er:YAG 150 mJ (11.0 J/cm2), 150 mJ (19.1 J/cm2), respectively, at 7–12 Hz with water spray. After surface preparation, upper central incisor stainless steel brackets were bonded with Transbond Plus Color Change Adhesive. The teeth were stored in water at 37°C for 24 hours and shear bond strengths were measured, and adhesive remnant index (ARI) was determined. The conditioned surface was observed under a scanning electron microscope. One-way ANOVA and chi-square test were used. Group I showed the significantly highest values of bond strength with a mean value of 8.2 megapascals (MPa). The lesser amount of adhesive remnant was found in Group III. The results of this study suggest that Er:YAG laser irradiation could not be an option for enamel conditioning.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the shear bond strength of three high-viscosity bulk-fill composite resins applied as single layers of 4mm thickness and of one microhybrid composite resin applied incrementally with a thickness of 2mm on dentin surfaces prepared with different surface preparation methods. Materials and Methods: A total of 132 caries-free human molars whose dentines had been exposed were used. Three groups, each containing 44 teeth, were formed. The acid group was etched with 32% phosphoric acid; laser group was etched with Er, Cr; YSGG laser and the control group was prepared with silicon carbid paper. Following the application of bonding agent, composite resin materials were applied on teeth using teflon moulds of 4x4mm. The samples were then subjected to shear bond strength tests. Two-way variance analysis and Tukey HSD multiple comparison test were applied on collected data. Results: There was a significant difference between surface treatment methods used regarding shear bond strength (P<0.001). The highest shear bond strength values were detected in the “Acid” group while the lowest shear bond strength values were detected in the “control” group. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant difference among composite resins (P>0.05). Conclusions: Laser etching of the dentin tissues is not as effective as acid etching. Bulk-fill composites had similar effects compared with conventional composite resins with regard to bonding strength. More in vitro studies supported with clinical data are required to investigate the performance of bulk-fill composites and laser.

The revolution in orthodontics has been due to replacement of cemented bands by orthodontic brackets. Acid etching is required to bond a bracket on tooth’s surface. Traditional three step acid etch procedure consisted of etching, sealing/priming and bonding. The self etch system (etchant and primer together) can be used without the need for surface preparation, saving chair side time and minimizing contamination. Objectives: To compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic bracket bonded with Conventional etching primer (Transbond XT, 3M Unitek) with self etch primer (Adper Prompt L-Pop, 3M ESPE). Study Design: Prospective study Setting: Orthodontic Clinic of Ihsan Mumtaz Hospital, Lahore and PCSIR (Lahore). Period: 6 months from June 2018 to December 2018. Material and Methods: 60 human maxillary premolars were randomly divided into 2 groups of 30 each. Group-I was bonded with conventional etching primer + composite and Group-II was bonded with self etch primer + composite. Shear bond strength was measured through Ionstron force testing machine. Statistical Analysis: For each variable, shear bond strength, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values were calculated. t-test was used to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of the two groups and P value less than and equal to 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean shear bond strength in group 1 and group II was10.5MPa and 7.36MPa respectively. Conclusion: The shear bond strength of Conventional etching primer + adhesive was significantly higher than the shear bond strength of self etch primer +adhesive group.
