The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength, the adhesive remnant index scores, and etch surface of teeth prepared for orthodontic bracket bonding with self-etching primer and Er:YAG laser conditioning. One hundred and twenty bovine incisors were randomly divided into four groups. In Group I (Control), the teeth were conditioned with 35% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. In Group II the teeth were conditioned with Transbond Plus SEP (5 sec); III and IV were irradiated with the Er:YAG 150 mJ (11.0 J/cm2), 150 mJ (19.1 J/cm2), respectively, at 7–12 Hz with water spray. After surface preparation, upper central incisor stainless steel brackets were bonded with Transbond Plus Color Change Adhesive. The teeth were stored in water at 37°C for 24 hours and shear bond strengths were measured, and adhesive remnant index (ARI) was determined. The conditioned surface was observed under a scanning electron microscope. One-way ANOVA and chi-square test were used. Group I showed the significantly highest values of bond strength with a mean value of 8.2 megapascals (MPa). The lesser amount of adhesive remnant was found in Group III. The results of this study suggest that Er:YAG laser irradiation could not be an option for enamel conditioning.

ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate and compare shear bond strength (SBS) and debonding characters of the Transbond XT (BisGMA-based composite), Esthet-X flow (flowable composite), Filtek Z-350 (flowable composite). Materials and methods A total of 90 human premolars were divided into group I, Transbond XT (n = 30); group II, Esthet-X flow (n = 30) and group III, Filtek Z-350 (n = 30), the preadjusted edgewise stainless steel premolar brackets were bonded to evaluate the shear bond and debonding properties. Results The results of the statistical analysis comparing the three groups indicated no statistically significant differences between the groups. In general, the SBS with groups I and III exhibited similar bond strength with 11.58 ± 1.3 MPa and 11.07 ± 1.0 MPa respectively. Groups III exhibited least bond strength of 10.7 ± 2 MPa. In modified adhesive remnant index (ARI) the majority of bond failures occurred at enamel-adhesive interface or cohesive type failure in all the three groups. Groups II and III showed increased frequency of score 2, 4 and 5 compared to group I which showed increased frequency of score 0 and 1. Conclusion When considering the SBS and ARI scores obtained, flowable composites can be effectively applied to orthodontic bracket bonding. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to compare shear bond strength (SBS), adhesive remnant index and enamel cracks in bonding and rebonding of brackets to enamel, conditioned with erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Er:YAG) laser and conventional acid-etching. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two bovine lower incisors were randomly divided into four groups consisting of group 1 (acid-conditioning in both bondings), group 2 (acid-conditioning in first and laser-conditioning in second bonding), group 3 (laser-conditioning in first- and acid-conditioning in second bonding), and group 4 (laser-conditioning in both bondings). After bracket placement, the samples were thermocycled and tested for SBS in both bonding procedures. Adhesive remnant index scores and enamel cracks were also determined. Tukey's test and one-way analysis of variance was used for statistical analysis (P<0.05). Results: Mean SBS in the first bonding was 23.59MPa in groups 1 and 2, and 6.9MPa in groups 3 and 4. (P<0.001). The acid-etched teeth had a significantly lower SBS in rebonding, regardless of the reconditioning method (P<0.001). The SBS of the teeth conditioned with Er:YAG laser in the first bonding did not show significant changes in rebonding, although mean SBS was higher compared to the first bonding (P=0.675). Bonding most often failed at the enamel-adhesive interface and enamel cracks were observed in a few teeth. Conclusion: The method of primary enamel preparation can affect SBS in rebonding. Based on our results, the mean SBS of Er:YAG-conditioned groups was clinically acceptable in bonding and rebonding, although it was lower compared to the acidetched samples.

The revolution in orthodontics has been due to replacement of cemented bands by orthodontic brackets. Acid etching is required to bond a bracket on tooth’s surface. Traditional three step acid etch procedure consisted of etching, sealing/priming and bonding. The self etch system (etchant and primer together) can be used without the need for surface preparation, saving chair side time and minimizing contamination. Objectives: To compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic bracket bonded with Conventional etching primer (Transbond XT, 3M Unitek) with self etch primer (Adper Prompt L-Pop, 3M ESPE). Study Design: Prospective study Setting: Orthodontic Clinic of Ihsan Mumtaz Hospital, Lahore and PCSIR (Lahore). Period: 6 months from June 2018 to December 2018. Material and Methods: 60 human maxillary premolars were randomly divided into 2 groups of 30 each. Group-I was bonded with conventional etching primer + composite and Group-II was bonded with self etch primer + composite. Shear bond strength was measured through Ionstron force testing machine. Statistical Analysis: For each variable, shear bond strength, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values were calculated. t-test was used to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of the two groups and P value less than and equal to 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean shear bond strength in group 1 and group II was10.5MPa and 7.36MPa respectively. Conclusion: The shear bond strength of Conventional etching primer + adhesive was significantly higher than the shear bond strength of self etch primer +adhesive group.

Abstract Objective: To study the shear bond strength (SBS), sites of failure, and micromorphology of bonded molar tubes used on teeth affected by dental fluorosis. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study included 140 first molars classified according to Dean's index for dental fluorosis. Samples were divided into seven groups: (1) healthy teeth etched for 15 seconds, (2) teeth with moderate fluorosis (MOF) etched for 15 seconds, (3) teeth with MOF etched for 150 seconds, (4) teeth with MOF microabrasion etched for 15 seconds, (5) teeth with severe fluorosis (SEF) etched for 15 seconds, (6) teeth with SEF etched for 150 seconds, and (7) teeth with SEF microabrasion etched for 15 seconds. All samples were incubated and were then submitted to the SBS test and evaluated with the modified adhesive remnant index (ARI) and analyzed by using a scanning electronic microscope. Results: The SBS mean value for healthy enamel was 20 ± 10.2 MPa. For the group with MOF, the etched 150-second mean value was the highest (19 ± 7.6 MPa); for the group with SEF treated with microabrasion and etched for 15 seconds, the mean value was (13 ± 4.1 MPa). Significant differences (P ≤ .05) were found in the ARI between healthy and fluorosed groups. Conclusions: Fluorotic enamel affects the adhesion of bonded molar tubes. The use of overetching in cases of MOF and the combination of microabrasion and etching in SEF provides a suitable adhesion for fixed appliance therapy.

Abstract Objective: To test the bonding characteristics of four flowable composites for orthodontic bracket bonding. Materials and Methods: Metal brackets were bonded to acid-etched human enamel using four flowable composites (Grandio Flow, GF; UniFil Flow, UF; UniFil LoFlo Plus, UL; and DenFil Flow, DF), an orthodontic bonding system (Transbond XT, TX), and a restorative composite (Filtek Z250, FZ). After 24 hours of storage in water at 37°C, a shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed. After debonding, the adhesive remnant index (ARI) was assessed. In addition, the flow and flexural strength of the materials were examined. Results: The SBS for the flowable composites ranged between 7.2 and 8.3 MPa, and TX showed a significantly higher value (mean 10.9 MPa). The flowable composites also demonstrated a significantly superior flowability, yet inferior flexural strength (except for DF) than TX and FZ. Two flowable composites (GF and UL) produced significantly higher ARI scores than TX and FZ, which represented a larger resin remnant on the enamel surfaces after debonding. Conclusion: When considering the SBS and ARI scores obtained in this study, flowable composites with no intermediate bonding resin could be conveniently applied for orthodontic bracket bonding.

AbstractAim:The aim of this study was a comparison of shear bond strength (SBS) on tooth enamel of different primers combined with the adhesive paste Transbond XT.Materials and methods:Forty bovine teeth were used in order to create 40 test blocks. The blocks were divided into four groups of 10 blocks each: group A – sample primer (SP); group B – Opal Seal (OS); group C – Transbond Plus SEP (TSEP); group D – Transbond XT Primer (TXT). After surface preparation and application of the primer, respectively, two stainless steel brackets were fixed on each tooth by using Transbond XT. Accordingly, 80 brackets were debonded (n=20). Shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed by using the Student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney U test.Results:All tested groups revealed high shear bond strength in a similar size range. There were no significant differences between the groups concerning shear bond strength. The ARI scores of group C showed significantly lower ARI scores (0 and 1) than that of group D. Apart from that there was no statistical difference.Conclusion:In combination with the adhesive paste Transbond XT, all tested primers were suitable for fixing orthodontic brackets. The primers could be changed according to the clinical situation.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of three enamel etching modes - laser-etch, self-etch and acid-etch (5, 10 and 15 s) - on bracket bonding, using a universal adhesive. Methods: Eighty-four maxillary premolars were randomly divided into seven groups (n=12) based on the etching method and the adhesive used for bracket bonding. After water storage and thermocycling, shear bond strength was measured, and adhesive remnant index scores on debonded enamel were determined. Results: There were significant differences between the seven groups regarding bond strength values (p< 0.001). The highest values were observed in universal adhesive with laser etching group, while Transbond XT with acid or laser etching, and universal adhesive used in self-etch mode demonstrated the lowest bond strength. The universal adhesive with the three different etching times presented with statistically similar results, all showing an improvement in bond strength, compared with Scotchbond universal (SBU)/SE. Conclusions: The universal adhesive evaluated in the present study demonstrated statistically similar bond strengths to conventional orthodontic adhesive in self-etch mode. The bond strength can be improved by adding an initial acid etching or laser conditioning step, although enamel damage was observed in some cases.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets using color change adhesives that are supposed to aid in removing excess of bonding material and compare them to a traditional adhesive. METHODS: Ninety metallic and ninety ceramic brackets were bonded to bovine incisors using two color change adhesives and a regular one. A tensile stress was applied by a universal testing machine. The teeth were observed in a microscope after debonding in order to determine the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). RESULTS: The statistical analysis (ANOVA, Tukey, and Kruskall-Wallis tests) demonstrated that the mean bond strength presented no difference when metallic and ceramic brackets were compared but the bond resistance values were significantly different for the three adhesives used. The most common ARI outcome was the entire adhesive remaining on the enamel. CONCLUSIONS: The bond strength was similar for metallic and ceramic brackets when the same adhesive system was used. ARI scores demonstrated that bonding with these adhesives is safe even when ceramic brackets were used. On the other hand, bond strength was too low for orthodontic purposes when Ortho Lite Cure was used.
