Pond water as surface water has certain environmental impacts on environmental media such as groundwater, lakes, atmosphere, and soil. Organic pollutants present in pond water may pose health risks to humans, but research on organic pollutants in pond water is rare. Here, taking pond water collected in rural areas of Hebei province as the sample, we analyzed and evaluated four categories of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), including 11 phenolic compounds, 7 aniline compounds, 16 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 14 PAH derivatives, and 16 phthalate esters (PAEs). The results show that the 10 water samples contained 26.2–17034 ng/L of Σ phenols, 33.7–2612 ng/L of Σ anilines, 33.9–1651 ng/L of Σ PAHs, and 59.0–2800 ng/L of Σ PAEs. Furthermore, non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk caused by SVOCs through direct ingestion and dermal exposure were also assessed. The current levels of non-carcinogenic risks and carcinogenic risks through these two means of exposure are within acceptable limits, except for the site 1 and site 5 in Hebei province where a total cancer risk exceeds 10−6. It can be concluded that the pond water studied had a low risk of carcinogenicity to the human.

Abstract Although the economy of a county that is linked to surrounding towns and rural areas constitutes a multiple basic economic unit within China's national economy, it usually exhibits independent characteristics and functions. Consequently, a county's economy plays a critical role in the overall economic development of a country's national economy. We created an evaluation index system based on entropy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of county economy across the entire Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. We found serious imbalances in the development of these counties, with county economies within Beijing and Tianjin being more advanced than those in Hebei Province. Furthermore, there were marked differences between county economies within prefecture-level cities of Hebei Province. The developmental level of counties in cities like Langfang, Tangshan and Chengde was relatively high. Conversely, the level of development of counties in Hengshui, Baoding, Xingtai and Handan was lower. Moreover, there were imbalances among cities in relation to county economic development, especially in Langfang, with smaller differences being found in Hengshui and Qinhuangdao. We analysed and identified the factors influencing differences between counties before providing recommendations.

The aim of this article was to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative variables influencing the wheat insurance purchasing decisions using farm level survey data in Hebei Province of China. The field surveys were carried out using questionnaire, focus group discussion and on site visit throughout in the targeted rural areas. Software Eview 6.00 and the binary logit regression model were used to determine the main factors influencing the farmers’ wheat insurance purchasing decisions. Results revealed that majority of the farmers were associated with the insuring of their wheat crop in different ways. In the focus group discussion it was found that the study area has been more prone to natural disasters and the wheat productivity was also affected. However, the findings presented in the article may help to improve the farmers’ wheat insurance purchasing decisions.

Abstract Hebei Province was affected by two coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak waves during the period 22 January 2020 through 27 February 2020 (wave 1) and 2 January 2021 through 14 February 2021 (wave 2). To evaluate and compare the epidemiological characteristics, containment delay, cluster events and social activity, as well as non-pharmaceutical interventions of the two COVID-19 outbreak waves, we examined real-time update information on all COVID-19-confirmed cases from a publicly available database. Wave 1 was closely linked with the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan, whereas wave 2 was triggered, to a certain extent, by the increasing social activities such as weddings, multi-household gatherings and church events during the slack agricultural period. In wave 2, the epidemic spread undetected in the rural areas, and people living in the rural areas had a higher incidence rate than those living in the urban areas (5.3 vs. 22.0 per 1 000 000). Furthermore, Rt was greater than 1 in the early stage of the two outbreak waves, and decreased substantially after massive non-pharmaceutical interventions were implemented. In China's ‘new-normal’ situation, development of targeted and effective intervention remains key for COVID-19 control in consideration of the potential threat of new coronavirus strains.
