Metal speciation studies are of great importance in assessing metal bioavailability in aquatic environments. Functionalized membranes are a simple tool to perform metal chemical speciation. In this study, we have prepared and tested a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) made of the polymer cellulose triacetate (CTA), the extractant di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), and the plasticizer 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) as a sensor for Zn and Cu complexation studies. This PIM, incorporated in a device with an 0.01 M HNO3 receiving solution, is shown to effectively transport free metal ions, and it is demonstrated that the presence of ligands that form stable complexes with divalent metallic ions, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and humic acid (HA), greatly influences the accumulation of the metals in the receiving phase due to the increasing metal fraction complexed in the feed phase. Moreover, the effect of major ions found in natural waters has been investigated, and it is found that the presence of calcium did not decrease the accumulation of either Zn or Cu. Finally, the PIM sensor has been used successfully to evaluate metal complexation in a river water affected by Zn pollution.

A bi-parametric sequential injection method for the determination of copper(II) and zinc(II) when present together in aqueous samples was developed. This was achieved by using a non-specific colorimetric reagent (4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol, PAR) together with two ion-exchange polymeric materials to discriminate between the two metal ions. A polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) and a chelating resin (Chelex 100) were the chosen materials to retain zinc(II) and copper(II), respectively. The influence of the flow system parameters, such as composition of the reagent solutions, flow rates and standard/sample volume, on the method sensitivity were studied. The interference of several common metal ions was assessed, and no significant interferences were observed (<10% signal deviation). The limits of detection were 3.1 and 5.6 µg L−1 for copper(II) and zinc(II), respectively; the dynamic working range was from 10 to 40 µg L−1 for both analytes. The newly developed sequential injection analysis (SIA) system was applied to natural waters and soil leachates, and the results were in agreement with those obtained with the reference procedure.

A facilitated transport of Pb(II) through polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) containing 1,8,15,22-tetra(1-heptyl)-calixresorcin[4]arene and its tetra- and octasubstituted derivatives containing phosphoryl, thiophosphoryl or ester groups as an ion carrier was investigated. The efficiency of Pb(II) removal from aqueous nitrate solutions was considered as a function of the composition of membrane (effect of polymer, plasticizer, and carrier), feed (effect of initial metal concentration and presence of other metal ions) and stripping phases, and temperature of the process conducting. Two kinetic models were applied for the transport description. The highest Pb(II) ions removal efficiency was obtained for the membrane with tetrathiophosphorylated heptyl-calixresorcin[4]arene as an ion carrier. The activation energy value, found from Eyring plot to be equal 38.7 ± 1.3 kJ/mol, suggests that the transport process is controllable both by diffusion and chemical reaction. The competitive transport of Pb(II) over Zn(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) ions across PIMs under the optimal conditions was also performed. It was found that the Cr(III) ions’ presence in the feed phase disturb effective re-extraction of Pb(II) ions from membrane to stripping phase. Better stability of PIM-type than SLM-type membrane was found.
