The method to define strain characteristics of soil under dynamic loading is proposed based on the results of experiments on dynamic compression of soils on the device for dynamic loading in laboratory conditions; the method allows solving wave problems with the statement similar to the statement of experiments. Using the proposed method, the modulus of dynamic and static compression, the modulus of unloading, the coefficient of viscosity of loess soil in the range of seismic loads are determined in accordance with elastic-visco-plastic model of soil developed by G.M.Lyakhov.

The problem of damage accumulation in fiber-reinforced concrete to structures supporting underground workings and tunnel linings against dynamic loading is insufficiently studied. The mechanical properties were determined and the mechanism of destruction of fiber-reinforced concrete with different reinforcement parameters is described. The parameters of the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model for fiber-reinforced concrete at different reinforcement properties are based on the results of lab experiments. Numerical simulation of the composite concrete was performed in the Simulia Abaqus software package (Dassault Systemes, Vélizy-Villacoublay, France). Modeling of tunnel lining based on fiber-reinforced concrete was performed under seismic loading.

A hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) is proposed to model rock fracture initiation and propagation during a three-point bending test under quasistatic and dynamic loading conditions. Three fracture models have been implemented in the FDEM to model the transition from continuum to discontinuum through fracture and fragmentation. The loading rate effect on rock behaviour has been taken into account by the implementation of the relationship between the static and dynamic rock strengths derived from dynamic rock fracture experiments. The Brazilian tensile strength test has been modelled to calibrate the FDEM. The FDEM can well model the stress and fracture propagation and well show the stress distribution along the vertical diameter of the disc during the Brazilian tensile strength test. Then, FDEM is implemented to study the rock fracture process during three-point bending tests under quasistatic and dynamic loading conditions. The FDEM has well modelled the stress and fracture propagation and can obtain reasonable fracture toughness. After that, the effects of the loading rate on the rock strength and rock fracture toughness are discussed, and the mesh size and mesh orientation on the fracture patterns are also discussed. It is concluded that the FDEM can well model the rock fracture process by the implementation of the three fracture models. The FDEM can capture the loading rate effect on rock strength and rock fracture toughness. The FDEM is a valuable tool for studying the rock behaviour on the dynamic loading although the proposed method is sensitive to the mesh size and mesh orientation.

Conical pick is a rock cutting tool that is commonly used in roadway driving. Pick wear frequently happens in the course of breaking hard rock. The current paper shows a new method to solve the problem of pick wear. The rock is preslit with the saw blade and then broken by the conical pick. In order to study the cutting force and features of rock fragment, the numerical model is built between rock plate and conical pick. And element erosion is added in the code to obtain the fracture result. The rock plate cutting testbed is made to testify the correctness of numerical simulation. The width, height, and thickness of the rock plate, as well as cutting angle and cutting position, which influence cutting force and rock fracture are studied. According to the results, there exist exponential relationships between cutting force and width and thickness of rock plate. In addition, a linear relationship is found between the cutting force and the height of rock plate. Furthermore, both the cutting angle and cutting depth have an influence on cutting force. In particular, the factors of thickness and height or rock plate have the most obvious influence on cutting force. It is proven that what is beneficial to rock fracture is higher height and lower thickness of rock plate.
