Although the performance of stacked dielectric elastomers has been demonstrated experimentally, improved simulation tools are required to accurately predict their dynamic performance in demanding applications in the power and automation industries. This investigation presents an integrated design optimization system that elucidates the relationship between various design variables and resulting electromechanical system performance in the context of a dielectric elastomer actuator driven electrical contactor. The system comprises several specially developed software modules that interact to automatically determine an optimal design. The core module consists of a user material subroutine that models electro-viscoelastic elastomers, the development of which is presented herein. This material behavior is then integrated within a coupled multi-body simulation implemented in the ABAQUS commercial finite element software. This module captures the mechanical dynamics of the switchgear for a given actuator design candidate. Finally, a fully-integrated multi-objective optimization workflow that automatically generates and evaluates design candidates is presented.

Small scale turbomachines in domestic heat pumps reach high efficiency and provide oil-free solutions which improve heat-exchanger performance and offer major advantages in the design of advanced thermodynamic cycles. An appropriate turbocompressor for domestic air based heat pumps requires the ability to operate on a wide range of inlet pressure, pressure ratios and mass flows, confronting the designer with the necessity to compromise between range and efficiency. Further the design of small-scale direct driven turbomachines is a complex and interdisciplinary task. Textbook design procedures propose to split such systems into subcomponents and to design and optimize each element individually. This common procedure, however, tends to neglect the interactions between the different components leading to suboptimal solutions. The authors propose an approach based on the integrated philosophy for designing and optimizing gas bearing supported, direct driven turbocompressors for applications with challenging requirements with regards to operation range and efficiency. Using previously validated reduced order models for the different components an integrated model of the compressor is implemented and the optimum system found via multi-objective optimization. It is shown that compared to standard design procedure the integrated approach yields an increase of the seasonal compressor efficiency of more than 12 points. Further a design optimization based sensitivity analysis allows to investigate the influence of design constraints determined prior to optimization such as impeller surface roughness, rotor material and impeller force. A relaxation of these constrains yields additional room for improvement. Reduced impeller force improves efficiency due to a smaller thrust bearing mainly, whereas a lighter rotor material improves rotordynamic performance. A hydraulically smoother impeller surface improves the overall efficiency considerably by reducing aerodynamic losses. A combination of the relaxation of the 3 design constraints yields an additional improvement of 6 points compared to the original optimization process. The integrated design and optimization procedure implemented in the case of a complex design problem thus clearly shows its advantages compared to traditional design methods by allowing a truly exhaustive search for optimum solutions throughout the complete design space. It can be used for both design optimization and for design analysis.

Advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing are enabling the design and fabrication of tailored lattices with high mechanical efficiency. Here, we focus on conducting experiments to mechanically characterize lattice structures to measure properties that inform an integrated design, manufacturing, and experiment framework. Structures are configured as beam-based lattices intended for use in novel spinal cage devices for bone fusion, fabricated with polyjet printing. Polymer lattices with 50% and 70% porosity were fabricated with beam diameters of 0.4–1.0mm, with measured effective elastic moduli from 28MPa to 213MPa. Effective elastic moduli decreased with higher lattice porosity, increased with larger beam diameters, and were highest for lattices compressed perpendicular to their original build direction. Cages were designed with 50% and 70% lattice porosities and included central voids for increased nutrient transport, reinforced shells for increased stiffness, or both. Cage stiffnesses ranged from 4.1kN/mm to 9.6kN/mm with yielding after 0.36–0.48mm displacement, thus suggesting their suitability for typical spinal loads of 1.65kN. The 50% porous cage with reinforced shell and central void was particularly favorable, with an 8.4kN/mm stiffness enabling it to potentially function as a stand-alone spinal cage while retaining a large open void for enhanced nutrient transport. Findings support the future development of fully integrated design approaches for 3D printed structures, demonstrated here with a focus on experimentally investigating lattice structures for developing novel biomedical devices.

Approaches to engineering design and manufacturing such as integrated design and manufacture and just in time fabrication depend on interaction with and among component supply companies that most often use very diverse technologies. The Internet Engineering Design Agents (i-EDA) software system uses a distributed, component-based, agent methodology that is realized following a strong black box approach to modeling. An individual Design Agent (DA) is a virtual product capable of encapsulating both descriptive and model based information about the product it represents. Hierarchically recursive agents for sub-systems and/or components are linked via a communications network to form larger integrated model systems. A two dimensional bridge system structural model is used as an example to illustrate the distributed assembly of structural models from components registered as DA’s on a communications network. Modular Distributed Modeling (MDM) of engineering structures performs static deflection analysis using traditional, fixed causality, structural stiffness models. This paper presents the methodology required to assemble traditional structural stiffness models provided by internet agents representing structural components. The methodology discussed assembles these component models into the structural stiffness model of an assembly distributed by an agents represent that physical assembly of components. Using this modular distributed modeling method; models of complex assemblies can be built and distributed while hiding the topology and characteristics of their structural subassemblies. The automated, modular, assembly of structural stiffness models will be derived for discrete physical connections. Discrete connections are important to the assembly of components such as truss and shaft structures where the relationship between component displacements involve discrete, matching, degrees of freedom on components to be assembled. Specific examples of discrete assembly of truss bridge component models will be presented.
