Samples of material less than 2 μ in diameter were obtained from the surface horizon of a Guelph loam and of a Haldimand clay loam. These samples were subjected to six successive treatments with the meta-stable triple point solution of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MTPS) to simulate the environment near a dissolving superphosphate granule. Samples of montmorillonite and illite standard clays were also included. The dissolution losses in per cent were: Guelph clay 59.5, Haldimand clay 40.4, montmorillonite 3.4, and illite 8.1. Total chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction techniques, differential thermal analyses and electron microscope observations were used to determine the nature of these losses. In the soil clay separates, vermiculite and interstratified montmorillonite were more susceptible to the action of MTPS than were the illite or halloysite clay minerals.

Over the last ten years the electron microscope has become well-established in mineralogical research and what used to be an exotic instrument has found its way into several geology departments. The rapidly growing literature on electron microscopy in mineralogy has recently been summarized (Wenk et al., 1976) and there is not much point in systematically reviewing progress of the last two years. Philosophy and techniques remained largely the same except that there is more emphasis on high resolution, and energy dispersive X-ray detectors have become standard attachments of electron microscopes. Instead I would like to use some examples studied at the Geology Department at Berkeley during the last few months to illustrate a variety of applications in materials which could not be investigated with conventional techniques such as light microscopy, standard chemical analyses and X-ray diffraction. Geology is a broad science which ranges from the study of crystal structures on the atomic scale to processes taking place during mountain building on the scale of the size of continents. The transmission electron microscope has been used in such diverse fields as crystallography, petrology, rock deformation, stratigraphy and environmental geology.

Kaolin deposits of residual origin associated with metamorphic rocks (leucocratic gneisses and schistgneisses) occur in Leucogia area, NE Greece. The chemical, mineralogical and textural characteristics of kaolin deposits were investigated by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and chemical analyses. Attempts have been made to correlate the primary and secondary assemblages and to establish the factors controlling the step-wise character of the transition from the fresh gneisses to kaolinized rocks. The kaolinization process seems to follow two alteration pathways: (i) Sodic plagioclases ? Halloysite ? Kaolinite. (ii) K-Feldspars ? Kaolinite.

Graphite encapsulated nickel nanoparticles were prepared by ball milling andsubsequently annealing a mixture of expanded graphite with nickel powders. The products were characterized by transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The formation mechanism of the products was discussed. Results show that the products have a size range of 20-150 nm. The graphite and nickel in the products all exhibit a high crystallinity.

The effect of the neodymium content on mechanical properties of the electro-brush plated nanoAl2O3/Ni composite coating was investigated in this paper. The microstructure and phase structure were studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hardness and abrasion properties of several coatings with different neodymium content were studied by nanoindentation test and friction / wear experiment. Results show that the coatings are much finer and more compact when the neodymium was added, and the hardness and abrasion property of the coatings with neodymium were improved obviously. Besides, the small cracks conduced by the upgrowth stress in the coatings were ameliorated when the rare earth neodymium was added. The improvement mechanism was further discussed.

In this paper, the effects of briquetting pressure on the performance of in-situ formed Sialon in Al2O3-C refractory bricks are investigated. The phase compositions and microstructure of the Al2O3-C refractory were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM).The results show the briquetting pressure hardly has effect on the phase of the sintered specimens, two new phases of Sialon with a Z value of 2 and SiC formed. The micrographs of Sialon crystals have the shape of both column and tabular column, but with a cone tip in the specimens sintered at 200MPa and 300MPa and smooth tip in specimens sintered at 400MPa and 500MPa.

Bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) hexagonal nanosheet crystals with uniform size were successfully prepared via a solvothermal method at 160°C for 22 h using bismuth trichloride(BiCl3) and selenium powder(Se) as raw materials, sodium bisulfite(NaHSO3) as a reducing agent, diethylene glycol(DEG) as solvent, and ammonia as pH regulator. Various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were used to characterize the obtained products. Results show that the as-synthesized samples are pure Bi2Se3 hexagonal nanosheet crystals. A possible growth mechanism for Bi2Se3 hexagonal nanosheet crystals is also discussed based on the experiment.

The influence of P2O5on the properties of alite-calcium strontium sulphoaluminate cement was researched by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and petrographic analysis. The results show that the optimal content of P2O5is 0.3% and the compressive strength of the cement at 1, 3, 28d are 27.0, 59.1, 110.9MPa when the calcining temperature is 1350°C. P2O5mainly exists in the belite and a suitable amount of P2O5can promote the formation of C1.5Sr2.5A3and alite. When the content of P2O5is higher than 0.3%, the formation of C1.5Sr2.5A3and alite can be hindered. P2O5can enhance the hydration heat evolution rate in the acceleration period and the hydrate heat of cement containing P2O5increases slightly.
