Germination of sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary from harvested seed of Brassica napus L. was not completely inhibited by methyl bromide at a concentration of 48 mg/liter and exposures up to 168 h. With 64 mg/liter, viability decreased further so that no sclerotia survived exposures of 72 h or longer. Methyl bromide was less effective against sclerotia dispersed in rapeseed samples. It appears unlikely, therefore, that viable sclerotia can be eradicated from bulk quantities of infested rapeseed by fumigation with methyl bromide within a practical exposure period.
