Effect of zeranol implants on age at onset of puberty, fertility and embryo fetal mortality in beef heifers

Thirty-three cross-bred beef heifer calves were implanted with zeranol (36 mg) at birth, 100 and 300 d of age and 40 heifer calves remained as untreated controls. Heifers were examined rectally by diagnostic ultrasonography every 14 d from 10 to 14 mo of age and then, every 21 d until the end of test (100 d after exposure to bulls). The presence of a CL, diameter of the largest follicle, total number of follicles ≥ 3 mm, diameter of the right uterine horn and age at puberty were recorded. At 15 mo heifers were exposed to bulls for 63 d. Mean (± SEM) age at onset of puberty in zeranol-implanted heifers (420 ± 8.9 d) was greater than control heifers (362 ± 6.2 d; P < 0.05). The diameter of the largest follicle was smaller (P < 0.05) in pre-pubertal zeranol-implanted heiferes than in pre-pubertal control heifers between 10 and 14 mo of age and at puberty. Within the zeranol-implanted heifers, the diameter of the largest follicle was smaller in pre-pubertal (P < 0.05) than pubertal heifers until 14 mo of age. The uterine diameter of zeranol-implaned heifers was smaller (P < 0.05) than that of control heifers during all examinations prior to breeding. Pubertal heifers had a larger (P < 0.05) uterine diameter than pre-pubertal heifers. Pregnancy rate after the first 21-d period of the breeding season and at the end of test was higher (P < 0.001) for control than for zeranol-implanted heifers (82.5 and 100%, respectively and 24 and 42.5%, respectively). Pregnancy loss in zeranol-implanted heifers was 37.5% compared with 0% for control heifers (P < 0.001). Heifers that became pregnant during the first 21 d of the breeding season had reached puberty earlier (396.9 ± 12.5 and 358.7 ± 6.4 d of age for zeranol-implanted and control heifers, respectively) than heifers not conceiving in the first 21 d (472.8 ± 10.8 d and 380.0 ± 17.7 d for zeranol-implanted and control heifers, respectively; P < 0.05). Heifers that became pregnant during the first 21 d of the breeding season had a larger (P < 0.001) uterine diameter (18.17 ± 0.21 mm) than non-pregnant heifers (16.28 ± 0.36 mm). Within the zeranol-implanted group, pregnant heifers had a larger (P < 0.05) uterine diameter (17.75 ± 0.05 mm) than non-pregnant heifers (15.78 ± 0.38 mm). Heifers that were not pregnant at the end of test began cycling later and had a numerically smaller uterine diameter than pregnant heifers (430 ± 17.5 d vs. 374.7 ± 6.2 d; and 15.1 ± 0.6 mm vs. 17.3 ± 0.24 mm, respectively), however these differences were not significant (P > 0.05). It was concluded that zeranol implants from birth delay the onset of puberty and decrease uterine horn diameter. Futhermore, the lower pregnancy rate in zeranol-implanted heiferes 100 d after exposure to bulls was caused by failure to cycle early in life, and in those that were cycling, failure to conceive and abortions between 25 and 45 d of gestation. Live weight, average daily gain (ADG) and reproductive performance were compared between heifers implanted with zeranol at birth, 100 and 200 d of age (n = 54) and those not implanted (n = 50). Zeranol implantation resulted in increased (P < 0.05) ADG from birth to weaning, weaning weight, ADG from weaning to breeding, breeding weight and calving weight but did not affect (P > 0.05) calf birth weights, incidence of dystocia, calf survival or gestation lengths. Zeranol implants did not affect (P > 0.05) the incidence or magnitude of the pre-ovulatory LH surge or the number of heifers that ovulated between 48 and 168 h after cloprostenol injection. Pregnancy rate 42 d after bull entry did not differ between the two groups (P > 0.10), tended toward a difference at 72 d (P < 0.10), and was different at 133 d (P < 0.05), with implanted heifers having a lower pregnancy rate than non-implanted heifers. Between day 72 and day 133 after bull entry there was a 10% embryonic or fetal mortality rate in zeranol-implanted heifers, which differed from the 0% loss in non-implanted heifers (P < 0.05). We conclude that serial implants of zeranol from birth reduced the pregnancy rate in heifers and that this effect was due to early fetal loss. Abstract Over the last four decades, several advances in reproductive biotechnologies have helped beef producers improve genetic traits of their cattle, tighten the breeding season and shorten the calving season, leading to an increase in overall profitability of cow-calf production systems. However, even with these advancements, reproductive failure and embryo mortality are still a major cause for economic loss in beef production. Recently, we projected a loss of $6.25 per exposed cow for every 1% decrease in pregnancy rate, with an estimated gross loss of $2.8 billion annually in the United States due to pregnancy failure in beef females. It is estimated that 75 to 80% of embryonic loss occurs by d 20 of gestation; a large portion of these losses occur during the first week of gestation and likely are caused by issues relating to fertilization failure, incompetence of embryos originated from poor quality oocytes and suboptimal uterine conditions. Furthermore, within the first month of gestation, nearly half of all cows submitted to breeding will not be pregnant 30 d later, and another 5% will lose their pregnancy by d 100 of gestation. In addition, breeding related costs, including bull purchase, breeding soundness exam, estrous synchronization, semen purchase, labor associated with artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis, are estimate at $65 per cow exposed. Assuming a 90% pregnancy rate at the end of the breeding season, and a scenario where all 30 million beef females in the U.S. are exposed to fixed-time artificial insemination and undergo one pregnancy diagnosis, the added lost revenue of not producing a live calf to sell at weaning and the cost of breeding, would represent a loss of over $21 billion annually in the United States. Strategies that reduce pregnancy loss in beef cattle are essential to improve productivity and profitability of cow-calf production systems.

The right and appropriate system of receiving and transferring goods is needed by the company. In the process of receiving and transferring goods from the central warehouse to the branch warehouse at PDAM Tirta Kerta Raharja, Tangerang Regency, which is currently done manually is still ineffective and inaccurate because the Head of Subdivision uses receipt documents, namely PPBP and mutation of goods, namely MPPW in the form of paper as a submission media. The Head of Subdivision enters the data of receipt and mutation of goods manually and requires a relatively long time because at the time of demand for the transfer of goods the Head of Subdivision must check the inventory of goods in the central warehouse first. Therefore, it is necessary to hold a design of information systems for the receipt and transfer of goods from the central warehouse to a web-based branch warehouse that is already database so that it is more effective, efficient and accurate. With the web-based system of receiving and transferring goods that are already datatabed, it can facilitate the Head of Subdivision in inputing data on the receipt and transfer of goods and control of stock inventory so that the Sub Head of Subdivision can do it periodically to make it more effective, efficient and accurate. The method of data collection is done by observing, interviewing and studying literature from various previous studies, while the system analysis method uses the Waterfall method which aims to solve a problem and uses design methods with visual modeling that is object oriented with UML while programming using PHP and MySQL as a database.

Abstract Implementation of demonstration method in the teaching of chemistry is assigned as the right strategy to improve students’ achievement as it is proved that the method can bring an abstract concept to reality in the class. The study is conducted to vocational high school students in SMKN1 Pargetteng getteng Sengkut Pakfak Barat at accademic year 2013. The teaching has been carried out three cycles on the teaching of chemistry topic of colloid system. In the study, the class is divided into two class, experiment class and control class. The demontration method is used to teach students in experimental class while the teaching in control class is conducted with lecture method. Both are evaluated by using multiple choise tests before and after the teaching procedures, and the ability of students to answer the problems are assigned as students’ achievements. The results showed that demonstration method improved students’ achievement in chemistry. The students in experimental class who are taughed with demonstration method (M=19.08±0.74) have higher achievements compare with control class (M=12.91±2.52), and both are significantly different (tcalculation 22.85 > ttable 1.66). The effectivity of demostration method in experimental class (97%) is found higer compare to conventional method in control class (91%).

In vision of searching for the right Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) for a specific mission, there are multiple factors to be considered by the operator such as mission, endurance, type of payload and range of the telemetry and control. This research is focusing on extending control range of the UAS by using 4G-LTE network to enable beyond-line-of-sight flying for the commercial UAS. Major UAS such Global Hawk, Predator MQ-1 are able to fly thousands of kilometers by the use of satellite communication. However, the satellite communication annual license subscription can be very expensive. With this situation in mind, a new type of flight controller with 4G-LTE communication has been developed and tested. Throughout the research, blended-wing-body (BWB) Baseline B2S is used as the platform for technology demonstrator. Result from this analysis has proven that the proposed system is capable to control a UAS from as far as United Kingdom, with a latency less than 881 ms in average. The new added capability can potentially give the commercial UAS community a new horizon to be able to control their UAS from anywhere around the world with the availability of 4G-LTE connection

Supplementary estrogen plays important roles for female patients as convenient birth control, relief of postmenopausal symptoms, and in the management of other selected problems. However, as is the case for essentially all medications, there are side effects. Short of a major pulmonary embolus, the most severe side effect of estrogen would appear to be sporadic, rare, and severe hypertriglyceridemia associated with acute pancreatitis. The occurrence of this fortunately rare problem usually happens in the presence of some preexisting and usually mild increase in triglycerides (TG). A case of chronic and severe recurrent acute pancreatitis is described in the introduction and the management was complete estrogen avoidance. Started close to menopause and continued for a relatively short period, estrogens may have some cardiovascular (CV) benefit but the general recommendation is not to prescribe them for CV disease prevention. Estrogens may contribute to decreased diabetes mellitus (DM) risk and control. Administration of estrogens by the transdermal route may decrease some problems such as venous thromboembolism (VTE) and elevation of TG. Administration of estrogen in the right situation brings significant benefit to the female patient but skillful, careful, and knowledgeable use is essential.

Custody refers to the physical care and control of a minor whereas guardianship is a wider term and includes rights and duties with respect to the care and control of minor’s person and property, and includes the right to make decisions relating to the minor. The present legal regime relating to guardianship and custody of children is discussed, including the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890, the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, 1956, the personal and matrimonial laws, and relevant provisions in the Family Courts Act and Protection of Women against Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The emerging concepts of shared parenting, joint custody, and the interparental child removal or abduction of child is included. There is review and analysis of some major reported judicial decisions. A comparative survey of international laws and trends has been done. Suggestions for law reform in the best interest of the child have been given.

<b><i>Aim:</i></b> The research was conducted as a randomized controlled pilot study to evaluate the effects of reflexology on lactation in mothers who delivered by cesarean section (CS). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A single-blind randomized controlled experimental study was conducted with a total of 60 postpartum women in the reflexology application (<i>n</i> = 30) and control groups (<i>n</i> = 30). After the CS, the mothers in the control group were given approximately 3-h routine nursing care after recovering from the effects of anesthesia; the introductory information form was applied, and the Breastfeeding Charting System and Documentation Tool (LATCH) and visual analog scale (VAS) for the signs of the onset of lactation were implemented on the first and second days. Reflexology was applied to the women in the intervention group after an average of 3 h following the mother’s condition had become stable and she had recovered from the effects of anesthesia. Reflexology was applied a total of 20 min – 10 min for the right foot, 10 min for the left foot – twice a day with 8-h intervals on the first and second days after CS. After the last reflexology application, the LATCH and VAS for the signs of the onset of lactation were applied. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Of the women, 70% breastfed their babies within 60 min after delivery; 46.7% of the mothers received breastfeeding training and 81.7% needed support for breastfeeding after the CS. The LATCH breastfeeding scores of the women in the intervention group on both days were significantly higher compared to those of the women in the control group (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). On the first day after the CS, apart from breast pain, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of breast heat and breast tension (<i>p</i> &#x3e; 0.05). On the second day after the CS, apart from breast tension, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of breast heat and breast pain (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). In the study, women in the intervention group were found to have higher scores in terms of all three symptoms compared to the control group (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> In the study, it was determined that LATCH scores and signs of the onset of breastfeeding increased in the mothers who received reflexology after CS.

Abstract Background Promoter region SNPs in TNF-α have been studied in association with Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) occurrence in various populations. Among them, −238G > A, −308G > A and − 376G > A have been frequently investigated for their potential role in recurrent abortions. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the correlation among TNF-α 238, TNF-α 308 and TNF-α 376 polymorphisms and recurrent pregnancy loss risk in Greek women. Methods This study included 94 Caucasian women with at least two miscarriages of unexplained aetiology, before the 20th week of gestation. The control group consisted of 89 Caucasian women of proven fertility, with no history of pregnancy loss. DNA samples were subjected to PCR amplification using specific primers. Sanger sequencing was applied to investigate the presence of TNF-α 238, TNF-α 308, TNF-α 376 polymorphisms in all samples. Results The TNF-α 238 and TNF-α 308 variants were both detected in RPL and control groups (7.45% vs 4.49 and 45.16% vs 36.73%, respectively), but with no statistically significant association (p-value 0.396 and 0.374, respectively). The TNF-α 376 variant was not detected at all in both control and RPL groups. When TNF-α 238 and TNF-α 308 genotypes were combined no association with RPL was detected (p-value = 0.694). In subgroup analysis by parity, RPL patients carrying the A allele reported less previous births. Conclusions This is the first study demonstrating TNF-α 238 and TNF-α 308 gene expression and the absence of TNF-α 376 variant in Greek women with RPL. However, no association emerged between each polymorphism studied and the occurrence of recurrent pregnancy loss. Accordingly, TNF-α -308G > A, −238G > A and -376G > A variants are not considered genetic markers for identifying women at increased risk of recurrent pregnancy loss in the Greek population.
