The carcass traits of 486 steers representing four breed types (British purebred, British crossbred, European crossbred, European purebred) were evaluated. Carcasses from European purebreds and crossbreds were heavier and leaner than those from British purebreds and crossbreds. British purebreds had a higher frequency of small marbling than European purebreds and crossbreds, but there was considerable variation in marbling across all breed types. It was concluded that European purebreds and crossbreds would return a higher market value than British purebreds and crossbreds under current marketing conditions.
