Effect of β-glucanase/pentosanase enzyme supplementation on the performance of chickens and laying hens fed wheat, barley, naked oats and rye diets

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of β-glucanase/pentosanase enzyme complex (Trichoderma viride, Roxazyme® G) on the performance of Leghorn chicks and laying hens fed wheat, barley, oats or rye diets. In the first experiment, enzyme addition (0.2 and 0.4 g kg−1) improved weight gain and feed efficiency in Leghorn chicks fed hulless barley (45 and 18%, respectively) and naked oat-based diets (35 and 15%, respectively). No response to dietary enzymes was evident when chicks were given the wheat diet. In the second experiment, the addition of Roxazyme® G to diets containing hulless barley (0.1 g kg−1) and rye (4.0 g kg−1) improved feed consumption (8 and 16%, respectively), weight gain (21 and 35%, respectively) and feed-to-gain ratios (11 and 14%, respectively). Relative gizzard weights of birds fed the rye diet were reduced by 18% when enzyme was added to this diet. In the third experiment, replacing all the wheat with hulless barley, naked oats or rye in diets for young pullets had no effect on overall performance during a 12-wk laying trial. Vent feather soilage increased with the incorporation of naked oats and rye. Enzyme supplementation had a beneficial effect on weight gain and feed intake but not on egg production, initial egg weight, average egg weight, egg specific gravity, Haugh unit score, and mortality. Two experiments were conducted to compare the performance of Leghorn hens fed a barley-based diet (68.93%) containing three levels of a Trichoderma viride enzyme supplement (0, 100 and 200 mg kg−1 as treatments T2, T3 and T4, respectively) with those obtained when fed a corn-based diet (Treatment T1). In exp. 1, 80 hens were used to determine performance during four 28-d periods, between 21 and 37 wk of age. Egg production, feed consumption, feed efficiency and egg weight of the hens were not affected by enzyme supplement and were similar to those of hens fed the corn diet (P > 0.05). There were also no significant effects on feed consumption per gram of egg or per bird per day (P > 0.05). There was a significant interaction for egg weight between enzyme addition and periods (P < 0.034), indicating that enzyme supplementation improved egg size in the early periods. In exp. 2, 20 hens were fed the same diets to measure water consumption and the ratio of water to feed consumption. Water consumption was not affected (P < 0.07) but the ratio of water to feed was significantly reduced (P < 0.0005) when enzyme was added to the barley-based diet. Water consumption in g d−1 was 172 for T1, 215 for T2, 211 for T3, and 195 for T4, and the water to feed ratios were 1.40, 1.85, 1.66, and 1.56, respectively. These results demonstrate that barley can replace corn in layer diets and that the addition of enzyme to barley-based diets appears to improve egg size and to reduce water consumption relative to feed intake in young laying hens. Hulless barley (var. Scout) was evaluated as a potential feedstuff for laying hens in two experiments. In exp. 1 hulless barley was substituted for wheat at four dietary levels (20, 40, 60 or 80%) and in exp. 2 hulless or conventional barley was substituted for wheat at two dietary levels (35.7 or 71.4%). Increasing dietary hulless barley had no effect on egg production or body weight in exp. 1 while feed consumption and feed conversion were significantly lower and egg weight and specific gravity significantly higher. In exp. 2, addition of hulless barley increased hen-day production and decreased egg specific gravity in comparison to hens fed a wheat diet. At the 35.7% dietary inclusion level, hulless barley resulted in more eggs with higher specific gravity than for hens fed conventional barley. Hens fed 71.4% hulless barley were heavier and produced larger eggs than hens fed the same level of conventional barley. It may be concluded that hulless barley was at least equivalent to wheat and surpassed conventional barley as a cereal grain for laying hens. Key words: Laying hens, hulless barley, barley

The aim of this study was to explore the potential of Pistacia terebinthus (terebinth) seed meal as a dietary supplement for laying hens. One hundred and ninety-two Babcock 30-week-old laying hens were assigned to one of six treatments (n = 32) with four replicates (n = 8). The hens were fed diets containing 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% terebinth seed meal for eight weeks. Weekly egg production, feed consumption, egg weight, and egg mass were recorded. Egg quality was assessed at the beginning, middle and end of the study. Blood sampling was carried out on 12 birds from each treatment. Total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status and oxidative stress index were determined. Egg production was greater from hens fed 3% and 4% terebinth than those in the other treatments. Egg weight was increased by supplementation with 2% or more terebinth. Feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, eggshell breaking strength, yolk colour, Haugh units, concentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total protein, phosphorus and calcium in serum, and total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status, and the oxidative stress index did not differ across treatments. It is concluded that dietary terebinth seed supplementation generated positive effects on egg production and egg weight without adverse effects on egg quality or the metabolism of the hen.Keywords: antioxidant, egg production, egg quality, feed consumption, serum biochemistry

Compound feed are subject to requirements for their composition, since they use several types of grains that contain anti-nutritive substances that reduce the digestibility and use of nutrients. One of the tasks of domestic poultry farming is to reduce losses by increasing the digestibility and accessibility of feed. Among the most effective ways to solve this problem is to add enzymes to the feed of poultry. The inclusion of enzyme drugs in the composition of compound feed contributes to the inactivation of anti-nutritive substances, which contributes to an increase in the coeffi cient of digestibility of nutrients. The purpose of the work was to establish the feasibility and eff ectiveness of the enrichment of compound feed used in the production technology of chicken eggs with mixtures of enzyme drugs of domestic production of Amylosubtilin G3x, Cellolux-F and Protosubtilin G3x. Three groups of laying hens with 57 heads in each have been formed: a control group and two experimental groups. The duration of the experiment was 420 days. Laying hens of the control group have been received farm compound feed depending on their age. Laying hens of the 1st experimental group have been received compound feed of the control group enriched with the enzymes Amylosubtilin G3x and Cellolux-F depending on the age. In the compound feed of laying hens of the 2nd experimental group enzyme drugs were additionally introduced depending on the age Amilosubtilin G3x and Protosubtilin G3x. Higher egg production rates have been observed in the 1st experimental group – 357,81 eggs, which was 6,48 % higher than in the control group and 1,84 % higher than in the 2nd experimental group. The weight of eggs of laying hens of the 1st experimental group was 1,85 g or 2,97 % more, and the 2nd experimental group was 0,7 g or 1,12 % more than in the control group. The diff erence between the egg weight in laying hens of the 1st and 2nd experimental groups was 1,85 % or 1,15 g. The lowest feed consumption of 1,37 kg for the production of 10 eggs was in the laying hens of the 1st experimental group, which was less than the indicator of the control group by 10,94 and by 4,2 % than in the 2nd experimental group.

Two hundred and sixteen Golden Hubbard strain of laying eggs, aged 32 weeks, were used to investigate the optimal level of maize offal (MO) that could replace maize with no detrimental effects on the performance of the hens. Graded levels of MO(0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%) replaced equal levels of maize in six dietary treatments (1 to 6 respectively). There were no significant (P>0.05) differences between diets in egg production and weight weight gain of the hens. Egg weight was highly influenced (P<0.01) by the dietary treatments, with 30% MO producing the heaviest eggs. Increasing dietary levels of MO significantly (P<0.01) significantly increased feed consumption. Feed conversion efficiency differed (P>0.05) only at 50% levels of dietary MO. Of the egg quality parameters investigated, albumen, yolk and shell percentages were not affected (P>0.05) by the MO, while the Haugh Units were (P<0.05).

Two experiments were conducted with 640 and 480 White Leghorn strain-cross hens to determine the optimum level of inclusion of naked oats (Avena nuda L. 'Tibor') in diets fed for 51 wk. In exp. 1 oats from 2 crop years were substituted for corn and soybean meal at levels of 0, 300, 600 and 782 or 808 g kg−1 in isoenergetic and isolysinic diets. Egg yield (46.4 g d−1) and egg production (78.0% hen.day) were unchanged up to 600 g oats kg−1 but were 4 and 6% lower at the highest dietary levels due in part to a 4-d later sexual maturity. Egg weight was 2% greater in all oat diets than in the control diet. Feed utilized per gram egg was 4.7% lower at 600 g kg−1 than at 0 g oat kg−1 the other diets being intermediate. A difference between crop years was seen in a higher percent small grade eggs for 1985. Dietary treatments had no effect on feed utilized per egg laid, incidence of soft shell and cracked eggs or on final body weight. In exp. 2, naked oats with alfalfa meal and a vitamin-mineral premix were supplemented with canola meal or lysine plus methionine or not supplemented, to give dietary oat levels of 675, 874 and 876 g kg−1 for comparison with a control of 0 g kg−1. Supplementation with canola meal supported 3.5% higher egg yield and hen.day egg production than that with lysine plus methionine, whereas for both supplemented diets egg yield, hen.day percent egg production and egg weight, as indicated by distribution of eggs between size grades, were, respectively, 8, 6 and 1.7% greater and feed utilized per gram egg was 7% lower than for the supplemented naked oat diet. The corn-soy control diet differed from the amino-acid-supplemented diet only in a 4.9% greater feed utilization per gram egg. It was concluded that naked oats can replace corn and soybean meal in layer diets and that, with supplementation of canola meal or lysine plus methionine, oat levels up to, respectively, 675 and 874 g kg−1 diet can support satisfactory and efficient egg production. ABSTRAK. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kinerja produksi dan kualitas telur ayam petelur yang diberi air gambut (AG) dan air non gambut (ANG). Penelitian ini menggunakan 30 ekor ayam petelur strain lohman brown umur 15 bulan dengan pemberian pakan ransum komersial. Penelitian terdiri dari dua kelompok ayam dengan jumlah masing-masing 15 ekor. Kelompok pertama diberi minum AG dan kelompok kedua diberi ANG. Peubah yang diamati adalah konsumsi air minum, konsumsi ransum, produksi dan massa telur, konversi ransum, bobot telur, indeks putih telur, indeks kuning telur, tebal cangkang telur dan nilai haugh unit. Data penelitian dianalisis dengan uji-t untuk mengetahui perbedaan antar kelompok perlakuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsumsi air minum, konsumsi ransum dan konversi ransum secara statistik berbeda nyata. Konsumsi air minum pada perlakuan AG (286,57 ml/ekor/hari) lebih tinggi dari pada perlakuan ANG (264,24 ml/ekor/hari), demikian juga konsumsi ransum (98,82 g/ekor/hari vs 90,10 g/ekor/hari). Sedangkan konversi ransum pada perlakuan AG (2,71) lebih baik dari pada perlakuan ANG (3,18). Pada peubah kualitas telur hanya bobot telur yang menunjukkan perbedaan nyata. Bobot telur pada perlakuan AG (55,85 g/butir) lebih tinggi dari pada perlakuan ANG (54,18 g/butir). Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah pemberian minum dengan AG mampu memperbaiki kinerja produksi ayam petelur, terlihat dari konsumsi air minum, konsumsi dan konversi ransum. Sedangkan pada kualitas telur hanya terlihat dari bobot telur.  (Performance and egg quality of laying hen given peat water and non peat water) ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance and egg quality of laying hens given peat water (PW) and non-peat water (NPW). This study used 30 laying hens strain lohman brown aged 15 months with commercial ration feeding. The study consisted of two groups of chickens with 15 chickens each. The first group was given PW and the second group was given NPW. The variables observed were water consumption, feed consumption, egg production and mass, FCR, egg weight, albumin and yolk index, egg shell thickness and haugh unit value. Data obtained were analyzed using t-test to determine the differences between treatment groups. The results showed that water consumption, feed consumption and FCR were statistically difference. The daily water consumption in PW treatment (286.57 ml/bird/day) was higher than in NPW treatment (264.24 ml/bird/day), as was ration consumption (98.82 g/bird/day vs 90.10 g/ bird/day). While the ration conversion in PW treatment (2.71) was better than that of NPW treatment (3.18). In the egg quality variable, only egg weight showed a significant difference. Egg weight in PW treatment (55.85 g/egg) was higher than in NPW treatment (54.18 g/egg). The conclusion of this experiment was the given peat water to laying hens was able to improve the production performance, indicated by water consumption, feed consumption and FCR. Meanwhile, the quality of eggs can only be seen from the egg weight.

Abstract. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of fluctuate lighting on performance of laying hens. Two programs were applied with 16 hours daily lighting: step-up (normal) lighting program as the control treatment and a fluctuate lighting program of 2 W/m2 for 45 min and 6 W/m2 for 15 min. Egg weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, henday egg production and hen-housed egg production of the laying hens were recorded for 46 weeks. No significant difference for hen-day and hen-housed egg production between the step up and fluctuate lighting programs (P>0.05) were found. However, fluctuate lighting program resulted in a significant increase in egg weight (P<0.05). Moreover, hens in the fluctuate lighting program consumed significantly less amount of feed and had a better feed conversion ratio than hens in the step-up lighting program (P<0.01). The results of the present study indicate that fluctuate lighting can be used for a profitable egg production.

Five and a half month old commercial strain laying pullets were fed on four diets containing from zero to thirty per cent raw sugar for a total of eleven months. Laying cages and deep litter housing were used in a factorial design. All sugar levels had no effect on overall egg production, feed consumption conversion, weight gain and mortality. A tendency for the production of more 55 g eggs at the expense of 60 g eggs is apparent in the results. The results confirm those from overseas that laying pullets will maintain normal levels of production for sugar levels of up to 30 per cent of their laying rations.
