EFFECTS OF DATE OF WEANING ON SUBSEQUENT PERFORMANCE OF BEEF COWS AND THEIR FEMALE CALVES

1233 April/May born calves were weaned either on 30 Sept. (EW) or 31 Oct. (LW) to assess the effects of weaning date on subsequent performance of their dams and female calves. Cows in the EW group lost less weight than those in the LW group in the month of October (0.003 vs. 0.48 kg d−1, P < 0.05). Dam's breed group, year and the interaction between year and age of dam also had significant effects on weight change during October. Cows generally lost weight between weaning and the next calving and the two weaning groups were similar in body weight at calving and reproductive performance. The reproductive performance of the EW and LW female calves were also quite similar. It can be concluded that weaning April/May born calves in September rather than October would not influence the subsequent production of the dams or their female calves, but would probably reduce their maintenance requirements as they enter the cold season in better condition. CONTEXT: Patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer have a tendency to gain weight. This tendency has determining factors not completely defined and an unknown prognostic impact. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate weight change during chemotherapy for breast cancer in a defined population and to identify its predisposing factors and possible prognostic significance. DESIGN: Observational, retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Private clinical oncology service. PARTICIPANTS: 106 consecutive patients with breast cancer treated between June 1994 and April 2000, who received neoadjuvant (n = 8), adjuvant (n = 74) or palliative (n = 24) chemotherapy. INTERVETION: Review of medical records and gathering of clinical information, including patients’ body weights before treatment and at follow-up reviews. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Body weight change, expressed as percentage of body weight per month in treatment; role of clinical data in weight change; and influence of weight change in overall survival and disease-free survival. RESULTS: There was a mean increase of 0.50 ± 1.42% (p = 0.21) of body weight per month of treatment. We noted a negative correlation between metastatic disease and weight gain (r = -0.447, p < 0.0001). In the adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy groups there was a mean weight gain of 0.91 ± 1.19 % (p < 0.00001) per month, whereas in the metastatic (palliative) group, we observed a mean loss of 0.52 ± 1.21% (p = 0.11) of body weight per month during the treatment. We did not observe any statistically significant correlation between weight changes and disease-free survival or overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: Women with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy gain weight, whereas metastatic cancer patients will probably lose weight during palliative chemotherapy. Further studies are needed in order to evaluate the prognostic significance of weight changes during chemotherapy.

Background: The evidences for the relationship between long-term weight gain and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Chinese population were limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore the association of body weight status in early adulthood and weight changes with MetS.Methods: Data from China Multicenter Collaborative Study of Cardiovascular Epidemiology including 12808 participants aged 35–59 were used. Participants were surveyed for cardiovascular risk factors and a self-reported weight at age 25, which was defined as early adulthood. Weight change was calculated as the difference between baseline weight and early adulthood weight. MetS was defined according to AHA/NHLBI definition in 2009. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the association between early adulthood weight status, weight change and MetS.Results: Mean age of participants was 46.7 years, including 6134 men and 6674 women. The overall prevalence of MetS was 21.8%. After adjusted for age, sex and other confounding factors, both BMI at 25 age and weight gain were positively associated with the risk of MetS. Being overweight (BMI, 24–27.9 kg m-2) or obese (BMI ≥28 kg m-2) at early adulthood was related to an increased risk of MetS, the odds ratio (OR) and 95%confidence interval (CI) was 3.24 (2.82–3.72) and 13.31 (8.72–20.31). In addition, weight gain was also associated with higher risk of MetS (P for trend<0.01).Conclusions: Overweight and obesity in early adulthood and weight gain were both independently related to an increased risk of MetS in the middle-aged Chinese men and women.

Abstract Several factors influence the overall maintenance requirements of a mature beef cow including age, gain, lactation, pregnancy, and fleshing ability. However, limited research is available to distinguish what sets a hard-fleshing cow apart from an easy-fleshing cow. Cows that are hard-fleshing maintain a lower body condition score (BCS) throughout the year compared to easy-fleshing counterparts. The objectives of this experiment are to determine the differences in characteristics and production between cows classified as easy- vs. hard- fleshing. Characteristics of interest include feed intake, milk yield, milk composition, body weight changes, BCS changes, and other body composition measurements, as well as calf weaning weight. In this study, 24 spring-calving, mature Angus beef cows were classified as either hard-fleshing or easy-fleshing based on BCS and ultrasound measurements for back fat and rump fat. The intake study took place during the second trimester, cows were assigned to an easy- or hard-fleshing pen based on treatment where they remained for the entirety of the 45-day intake study. Each treatment was replicated three times in a completely randomized design. Milk data collection began one month after calving with monthly milkings from May-August. There were no differences (P = 0.9) in DMI, although hard-fleshing cows had greater DMI calculated on a metabolic body weight basis (P = 0.05). There was a trend (P = 0.12) for hard-fleshing cows to wean heavier calves, although there was no difference in mean milk yield (P = 0.44). Body condition score was positively correlated with protein and carbohydrate content of milk with easy-fleshing cows having greater contents of both (P = 0.02 and P < 0.01, respectively). Overall, an increase in BCS without an increase in DMI may be beneficial from a reproductive standpoint, though more research in this area is needed.

ABSTRACTThe effects of reducing the feed intake of 12 winter-calving (Hereford male × British Friesian female) cows to the maintenance level for 6 weeks from week 10 of lactation were investigated during two consecutive lactation periods. Initially, six cows were in their first and six in their third lactation. In each year the period of ‘underfeeding’ was preceded by a period of ‘adequate feeding’ (maintenance plus milk production requirements) and succeeded by a period of ‘refeeding’ (2 × maintenance). Changes in body water, estimated by the dilution of tritiated water and deuterium oxide at the end of each feeding period, were used to calculate changes in body tissue. Milk yield during the period of ‘adequate feeding’ indicated that individual cows differed markedly in milk production potential. During ‘underfeeding’ milk yield was related to lactation potential. Cows of higher potential tended to maintain higher yields than those of lower potential but in doing so they incurred higher body-weight losses. The ‘refeeding’ period did not result in significant increases in milk yield. The weight losses during ‘underfeeding’ consisted mainly of fat but some cows apparently mobilized relatively large amounts of protein. More fat per unit body weight loss was mobilized by the heifers than by the cows, which, on the other hand appeared to mobilize relatively more protein. On ‘refeeding’, only a few cows were able to achieve complete tissue repletion.

A theoretical equation was developed by Forbes that quantifies the fat-free proportion of a weight change as a function of the initial body fat. However, Forbes's equation was strictly valid only for infinitesimal weight changes. Here, I extended Forbes's equation to account for the magnitude and direction of macroscopic body weight changes. The new equation was also re-expressed in terms of an alternative representation of body composition change defined by an energy partitioning parameter called the P-ratio. The predictions of the resulting equations compared favourably with data from human underfeeding and overfeeding experiments and accounted for previously unexplained trends in the data. The magnitude of the body weight change had a relatively weak effect on the predicted body composition changes and the results were very similar to Forbes's original equation for modest weight changes. However, for large weight changes, such as the massive weight losses found in patients following bariatric surgery, Forbes's original equation consistently underestimated the fat-free mass loss, as expected. The new equation that accounts for the magnitude of the weight loss provides better predictions of body composition changes in such patients.

Introduction Weight variations are a common phenomenon. Therefore, concern has been raised about the association between weight changes and weight variations and coronary heart disease (CHD). The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of weight change and weight variations as risk factors for coronary heart disease. Materials and methods The investigation was conducted as an observational cross-sectional study, including 102 participants of both genders: 61 patients with CHD and 41 healthy controls. All participants underwent anthropometric measurements and completed a questionnaire that included 1) weight changes in adulthood (maximum and minimum weight), 2) presence and number of weight variations in the 10 years prior to the onset of disease and 3) the size of weight change (weight gain or weight loss in kg). One weight variation was defined as weight loss followed by weight gain for more than 10% of body weight, or about 7 kg. Multivariant logistic regression was used for the estimation of significant predictors for the occurrence of coronary heart disease. Results Participants with CHD had higher values of body weight in adulthood compared to healthy controls, larger number of weight variations in the last 10 years, and more frequently reported weight gain and weight loss for more than 10 kg. The highest risk for the occurrence of coronary heart disease was observed for participants who had more than 3 weight variations for 10% (OR=2.13; 95%CI=0.98-5.48), those with weight loss over 10 kg (OR=2.16; 95%CI=1.71-2.72) and those with weight gain over 10 kg (OR=2.71; 95%CI=1.08-6.83), regardless of gender, age, smoking, body mass index and blood pressure. Discussion Several mechanisms are suggested to explain the relationship between weight changes and variations and coronary heart disease, including changes in plasma lipid levels, insulin levels, decrease of HDL cholesterol, increase of C-reactive protein and increase of blood pressure. Conclusion This study suggests that frequent and very intense weight changes can be considered important predictors for the occurrence of coronary heart disease.

Abstract. The aim of the study was to compare the body weight and the parameters of reproductive performance in beef cows of various breeds following their import to Poland from 1995–1997. The analyses included cows of five beef breeds: Red Angus, Salers, Hereford, Limousin and Simmental. We have compared the body weights and calving intervals during the period from their arrival to Poland in 1995 until 2002, with subsequent calvings included in the analyses. Other aspects included calving difficulty, abortions, stillbirths and twin births. The analysis of the cows’ reproductive performance has revealed that the studied breeds differ in the calving interval. Best results were achieved by Simmental and Limousine cows, while Red Angus cows exhibited the poorest performance. The effect of subsequent calving on the calving interval was also confirmed. We have observed no differences among the mature cows with respect to the body weight and calving ease.
