Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of supplementing broiler rations with a multiple cellulolytic enzymes system (Driselase) on the performance of chicks raised to 4 wk of age (exp. 1) and to 8 wk of age (exp. 2). Four broiler rations unsupplemented or supplemented with 0.03% Driselase were used in the study. One of the rations was based on soybean meal and wheat while the other three contained 20% rapeseed meal (produced from Regent, Candle and Turret cultivars of rapeseed) as a partial replacement for soybean meal. The results obtained in both experiments indicated a lack of response in body weight and feed conversion of the chicks to Driselase supplementation. In both experiments, the chicks receiving the rations containing rapeseed meal showed varying degrees of thyroid enlargement depending on the cultivar of rapeseed from which the meal was produced, with Turret meal causing the greatest increase in thyroid size. Thirty male Holstein calves were utilized in a 2 × 3 factorial experiment designed to compare rapeseed meal (cv. Candle) and soybean meal as protein supplements and 0, 10, and 20% levels of protected lipid as a form of supplemental energy for starter rations. The six rations were fed free choice from 21 to 70 days of the experiment with whole milk fed at 10% of body weight from 0 to 42 days. Starter intake was similar for the two protein sources but significantly less for the ration containing 10% protected lipid compared to either the 0 or 20% levels. Body weight gain was faster for calves fed the starter containing 20% protected lipid compared to those fed the 10% level. Efficiency of feed conversion was greater for calves receiving protected lipid. There were no differences between protein source in dry matter intake, body weight gain, efficiency of feed conversion, apparent dry matter digestibility or dressing percent. Plasma glucose and percent hematocrit were significantly lower and percent kidney fat significantly higher for calves fed starter rations containing soybean meal. The relative availability of copper was reduced significantly when soybean meal or 20% protected lipid formed part of the starter diet. It was concluded from this study that Candle rapeseed meal was a suitable source of supplemental protein for calf starter diets and that the inclusion of protected lipid improved feed conversion of calves from 43 to 70 days of age.

Ninety-six Yorkshire barrows and gilts were used in each of two experiments conducted in the spring-summer (exp. 1), and fall-winter (exp. 2) months, respectively, to evaluate 15% Tower rapeseed meal (RSM) as a partial replacement for soybean meal (SBM) on an isonitrogenous basis in corn-based diets for pigs from 23 to 91 kg body weight. At 91 kg, half the number of pigs in each dietary group were slaughtered. Then, three levels of protein (12, 14 and 16%) in both corn-SBM and corn-SBM-RSM diets were fed to the remaining pigs in each group up to a final body weight of 125 kg. The energy level in the RSM diets was not adjusted to equal that in the SBM diets. In the 23- to 91-kg gain period, average daily gain (ADG) (P < 0.01) and backfat (P < 0.05) were lower in the RSM-fed pigs compared to SBM-fed pigs only in exp. 2. From 91 to 125 kg body weight, ADG (P < 0.05), feed intake (P < 0.01) and backfat (P < 0.01) were lower for RSM-fed pigs only in exp. 2. The heavy weight pigs fed RSM diets had a lower (P < 0.01) dressing percentage than SBM fed pigs in exp. 1. Reduction of dietary protein from the 16% fed up to 91 kg body weight to either 14 or 12% in the 91- to 125-kg gain period did not affect performance.

An experiment with 32 crossbred gilts averaging 10 kg at allotment was designed to evaluate prepress-solvent extracted rapeseed meal (RSM) of Brassica campestris origin as a partial replacement for soybean meal (SBM) in diets of sows during growth or growth and reproduction when the sows were retained for three reproductive cycles. Four treatments were involved: (1) sows fed SBM throughout; (2) gilts fed 6% RSM to 90 kg and SBM for the remainder of the experiment; (3) gilts fed 6% RSM to immediately prior to first mating and SBM for the remainder of the experiment; (4) sows fed 6% RSM throughout. A second experiment with 16 mature Yorkshire sows evaluated the same RSM for one reproductive cycle only as a partial replacement for SBM when introduced into the diet immediately prior to breeding. During the growing period to 90 kg, daily feed intake, gain, and feed conversion did not differ significantly for gilts fed 0 or 6% dietary rapeseed meal, daily gain averaging 0.68 kg. Digestible energy, metabolizable energy, digestible nitrogen, and nitrogen retention coefficients were not influenced by level of dietary RSM or by period (15 or 45 kg) at which digestibility studies were conducted. Gestation length, litter size, and weight at birth and weaning were not influenced by dietary treatment in either experiment. Thyroid weights and ratio of thyroid weight to body weight of representative 2-wk-old female pigs did not differ significantly between treatments. In the first experiment, there was an average disposal of 23% of the sows per reproductive cycle because of failure to breed, failure to conceive, and other causes but these removals did not appear to be associated with treatment. The overall results suggest that up to 6% RSM of the type fed is not detrimental to sow performance when the RSM is fed during growth, throughout growth and reproduction, or when introduced suddenly at the time of breeding.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect that varying the amount of glucosinolates and free oxazolidinethione (OZT) in a laying diet containing a constant amount of sinapine had on the trimethylamine (TMA) content of eggs and the incidence of fishy eggs from brown-shelled egg layers. Duplicate groups of 10 Rhode Island Red laying hens which had been found to lay fishy eggs when fed a diet containing 10% rapeseed meal (RSM) were fed each of the four experimental diets. The diets consisted of a wheat-soybean-meal-type control diet and three diets to which aqueous extracts of RSM produced from high, medium and low glucosinolate cultivars (Oro, Span and Tower) were added. The extracts were included in the diet at levels of 3.42, 4.4 and 5.0%, respectively, to provide a sinapine content of 0.17%, a level equivalent to that which would result from the inclusion of 10% RSM in the diet. The results showed that the TMA content of eggs produced by the layers fed the diet containing Tower aqueous extract was significantly higher than that of eggs produced by birds fed the diets containing Oro or Span aqueous extracts (P < 0.05). Since the level of glucosinolates in the diets containing Oro and Span aqueous extracts were about seven times that in the diet containing the Tower aqueous extract, it may be concluded that intact glucosinolates do not affect the amount of TMA in eggs from brown-shelled egg layers fed a diet containing a constant amount of sinapine. On the other hand, free OZT in the diet increased the TMA content of the eggs and the incidence of fishy eggs produced by brown-shelled egg layers. The present study set out to determine the effects of incorporating cDDGS into starter, grower, and finisher diets (containing 5%, 10%, and 15% of cDDGS, respectively) on growth performance, carcass and meat quality, and cost effectiveness of pig fattening. Sixty-four pigs (mean body weight of 15.0 ± 2.1 kg) were divided into two groups (n = 32) and fed a control diet (cereal–soybean meal-based) or cDGGS-containing diets (with soybean meal partially replaced with cDDGS). Live weights of pigs as well as weight gains/daily weight gains across all fattening phases did not differ between the two groups of fattener pigs studied (p > 0.05). Addition of cDDGS decreased feed intake per pig during the grower (p < 0.05) and finisher (p < 0.01) phases, and, as a result, throughout the entire fattening period (254 vs. 245 kg for control and cDDGS groups, respectively; p < 0.01). The feed conversion ratio (FCR) for the entire fattening period was significantly less for cDDGS-fed fatteners (2.77) than for controls (2.91; p < 0.05). Carcass weights, fat thickness, and meatiness did not vary between the two groups of animals (p > 0.05). Loin depth was greater in the cDDGS group by ~5 mm (p < 0.05). Slaughter value was higher for the cDDGS group (76.1% vs. 77.0%, p < 0.05). The total cost of fattening and total cost of 1 kg of body weight decreased in cDDGS compared with the control subset of fatteners by ~7% and 8% during the grower and finisher phases, respectively (p < 0.01). The simplified direct surplus per pig was approximately 63% higher for the cDDGS group. Our results indicate that even moderate inclusion of cDDGS to concentrate mixtures (or a partial replacement of soybean meal with cDDGS) may improve FCR without any substantial changes in meat and back fat characteristics as well as significantly decrease the cost of feeding and increase the profitability of pig production.

<p>The experiment was carried out to observe the effect of sires and diets on the growth traits of Turi duck up to the age of eight weeks. There were five sires and 25 dams which produced 151 offspring used in the experiment. Three diets with equal nutrient balance but different concentration P1: {CP:EM= 1:145,EM 2482 kcal/kg:protein 17%}; P2 {CP:EM= 1:146 EM 2628 kcal/kg:protein 18%}; dan P3 {CP:EM= 1:144 (EM 2774 kcal/kg: protein 19%} were then applied. Phenotypic datasets on body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion parameters were collected. The result showed that sire had no effect on body weight, body weight gain and feed conversions of the offspring. Different diets, on the other hand affected feed consumption (lowest P3:822.37 g/head/weeks). Interactions between sires x age were then found to be significantly affected feed consumption.</p><p><br />(Key words: Sires, Diets, Growth, and Turi duck)<br /><br /></p>

AbstractThe aim of the study was to assess the effect of fermented dried soybean (FSBM) and/or fermented rapeseed meal (FRSM) in diets for weaned piglets on production results, nutrient digestibility, gastrointestinal tract histology, and the composition of the gut microbiota. Piglets in the control group received standard diets with soybean meal. Animals in all experimental groups received diets in which a portion of the soybean meal was replaced: in group FR—8% FRSM; in group FR/FS—6% FRSM and 2% FSBM; in group FS/FR—2% FRSM and 6% FSBM and in group FS—8% FSBM. The use of 8% FRSM or 6% FRSM and 2% FSBM in the piglet diets had a positive effect on average daily gains. Piglets from the FR and FR/FS groups had the highest feed conversion rate. Group FS/FR and FS piglets had significantly lower mortality and lower incidence of diarrhoea. Piglets fed a diet with the fermented components, in particular with 8% FRSM or 6% FRSM and 2% FSBM, exhibited a positive effect on the microbiological composition and histology of intestines, which resulted in improved nutrient digestibility coefficients (ATTD and AID).

A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with a total of 160 day-old commercial broiler chicks which were randomly assigned to four treatment groups with five replicates into 20 pens and brooded. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. From day old chick to 21 day, the broiler chicks were fed Diet 1 (5% fish meal and 25% soybean meal, 1: 5), Diet 2 (3% fish meal and 30% soybean meal, 1: 10) was served as control diet, Diet 3 (2% fish meal and 30% soybean meal, 1: 15) and Diet 4 (1.5% fish meal and 30% soybean meal, 1: 20). From day 22 onwards, the broiler chicks were fed finisher diet, Diet 1 (5% fish meal and 25% soybean meal, 1: 5), Diet 2 (2.6% fish meal and 26% soybean meal, 1: 10, serve as control diet, Diet 3 (1.8% fish meal and 27% soybean meal, 1: 15) and Diet 4 (1.3% fish meal and 26% soybean meal, 1: 20). Weekly performances and mortality are measured. By feeding FS5 diet (5% fish meal and 25% soybean meal), the heavier body weight, increased feed consumption and feed conversion ratio of broiler chicks was observed when compared to that of other treatment groups. Conclusively, it is obvious that the ratio of dietary fish meal to soybean meal 1: 5 (FS5) improved body weight but the lower feed efficiency of this diet should be considered in economical point of view.

Abstract This study evaluated the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of crambe meal (CM) and its potential to partially replace soybean meal (SM) protein in Nile tilapia diets. The ADC for dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, energy, amino acids, calcium and phosphorus of CM were assessed in fish (n=80; 65.30 ± 5.32 g). Subsequently, an 80-day feeding trial was conducted with Nile tilapia (n=140; 6.04 ± 0.25 g) randomly distributed in 20 experimental cages (70 L; seven fish cage-1) allocated in five circular tanks (1000 L) in recirculation water system, to evaluate the effects of replacement of SM by CM (0, 6, 12, 18 and 24% in isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets) on growth, blood parameters, fillet yield and proximal composition. The CM shows good digestibility of protein (0.824) and amino acids (0.844) by Nile tilapia and its inclusion in the diet does not affect carcass and fillet yield or proximal composition. Fish fed diets with 24.0% of the SM replaced by CM showed the worst weight gain and feed conversion rate. The protein efficiency ratio decreased in fish fed diets with 12.0, 18.0 and 24.0% of the SM replaced by CM. Hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, total plasma protein, glucose and alanine aminotransferase enzyme activity trend to increase at highest levels of CM in the diet. In conclusion, CM has potential to replace SM in Nile tilapia diets, due to high digestibility of protein and amino acids. However, anti-nutritional factors present in untreated CM interfere on the growth and nutrient utilization of Nile tilapia.

Feed cost has been a major challenge to the competitiveness of the poultry industry of Ghana due mainly to high cost of proteins. Insect larvae meals seem convenient alternatives however their use on commercial scale is unknown in Ghana. Three 8-week feeding trial using three isonitrogenous, isocaloric diets in a three-phase feeding strategy involving 1320 broiler DOCs was conducted. BSFLM was used as replacement for fishmeal and as partial replacement for soybean meal to determine its effect on broiler productivity, profitability and carcass measurements. The results indicated that replacing fishmeal with BSFLM significantly improved weight gain, feed conversion efficiency and production efficiency factor (PEF). No detrimental effect was observed on carcass and specific organ measurements. Using the partial budgeting approach on a 500-bird estimation an increase of one thousand, one hundred and eleven Ghana cedis (GH₵1,111.00) was obtained when the fishmeal was replaced with BSFLM. Also, an increase of four hundred and sixty-seven Ghana cedis (GH₵467.00) was estimated when soybean meal was partially replaced with BSFLM. It was concluded that BSFLM can be used to improve the productivity and profitability of broiler production.
