EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT EXPONENTS IN THE DETERMINATION OF METABOLIC BODY SIZE OF PIGS

Estimates ranging from 0.30 to 1.00 were evaluated as the value of exponent b of metabolic body size (Wbkg) for young growing pigs by use of a multilinear regression equation HP = q + (1−a) ME + ak Wbkg. Data on heat production, metabolizable energy intake, and average empty body weight for 87 pigs, ranging from 5 to 35 kg liveweight, of Lacombe, Yorkshire, Hampshire × Yorkshire, and Lacombe × Yorkshire breeding and for all pigs combined were used in this study. The criteria of best fit were the maximum coefficient of determination and the minimum coefficient of variation. The use of a particular exponent from 0.30 to 1.00 did not markedly influence the best fit. Differences in R2 and C.V. from using different exponent values were negligible. Because the results of this study and those from the literature suggest that no marked variation in precision results from using different values of exponent b, the use of 0.75 as the general reference base in calculating metabolic body size for growing pigs is recommended.

A comparative slaughter trial involving 32 weanling pigs was conducted to estimate the energy requirements for maintenance and production and to compare the energetic efficiency of Lacombe and Yorkshire pigs. The coefficients of digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), and ME/DE ratio were similar for the two breeds. The fasting heat production and energy requirements for maintenance of energy equilibrium for the Yorkshire pigs were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than for the Lacombe pigs. Differences in the efficiency of utilization of ME for the function of maintenance and for production were not significant. Estimates of net energy for maintenance and net energy for gain of the corn-soybean meal diet are presented. The study suggests that these net energy values, like the DE and ME values, may be used for diet formulation without need for correction for breed. The use of the exponent 0.56 rather than 0.75 as the reference base of metabolic body size led to increased precision, as indicated by higher estimates of the coefficient of determination.

Abstract The object of this study was to establish a new method to predict the content of DE and ME in sorghum fed to growing pigs by using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). A total of 33 sorghum samples from all over China were used in this study. The samples were scanned for their spectra in the range of 12,000 to 4,000 cm−1. Based on principal components analysis of the spectra, the samples were split into a calibration set (n = 24) and a validation set (n = 9) according to the ratio of 3:1. With animal experiment values as calibration reference, the calibration models of DE and ME were established using partial least squares regression algorithm. Different spectral pretreatments were applied on the spectra to reduce the noise level. The best wavenumber ranges were also investigated. Results showed that DE and ME content in sorghum fed to growing pigs ranged from 14.57 to 16.70 MJ/kg DM and 14.31 to 16.35 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The optimal spectral preprocessing method for DE and ME was the combination of first derivative and multiplicative scatter correction. The most informative near-infrared spectral regions were 9,403.9 to 6,094.4 cm−1 and 4,605.5 to 4,242.9 cm−1 for both DE and ME. The best performance for DE and ME calibration models was the coefficient of determination of calibration (R2c) of 0.94 and 0.93, coefficient of determination of cross-external validation (R2cv) of 0.88 and 0.86, residual predictive deviation of cross-external validation (RPDcv) of 2.86 and 2.64, coefficient of determination of external validation (R2v) of 0.90 and 0.81, and residual predictive deviation of external validation (RPDv) of 3.15 and 2.35, respectively. There were no significant differences between the measured and NIRS predicted values for DE and ME (P = 0.895 for DE and P = 0.644 for ME). As the number of calibration samples increased from 24 to 33, the calibration performance of DE and ME models was improved, indicated by increased R2c, R2cv, and RPDcv values. In conclusion, NIRS quantitative models of the available energy in sorghum were established in this study. The results demonstrated that the content of DE and ME in sorghum could be predicted with relatively high accuracy based on NIRS and NIRS showed the superiority of speediness and practicality when compared with previous research methods including animal experiments, regression equations, and computer-controlled simulated digestion system.

Mathematical model was developed and evaluated to monitor and predict the groundwater characteristics of Trans-amadi region in Port Harcourt City. In this research three major components were considered such as chloride, total iron and nitrate concentration as well as the polynomial expression on the behavious on the concentration of each component was determined in terms of the equation of the best fit as well as the square root of the curve. The relationship between nitrate and distance traveled by Nitrate concentration by the model is given as Pc = 0.003x2 - 0.451x + 14.91with coefficient of determination, R² = 0.947, Chloride given as Pc = 0.000x2 - 0.071x + 2.343, R² = 0.951while that of Total Iron is given as Pc = 2E-05x2 - 0.003x + 0.110, R² = 0.930. All these show a strong relationship as established by Polynomial Regression Model. The finite element techniques are found useful in monitoring, predicting and simulating groundwater characteristics of Trans-amadi as well as the prediction on the variation on the parameters of groundwater with variation in time.

This study was performed to update and generate prediction equations for converting digestible energy (DE) to metabolizable energy (ME) for Korean Hanwoo beef cattle, taking into consideration the gender (male and female) and body weights (BW above and below 350 kg) of the animals. The data consisted of 141 measurements from respiratory chambers with a wide range of diets and energy intake levels. A simple linear regression of the overall unadjusted data suggested a strong relationship between the DE and ME (Mcal/kg DM): ME = 0.8722 × DE + 0.0016 (coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.946, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.107, p < 0.001 for intercept and slope). Mixed-model regression analyses to adjust for the effects of the experiment from which the data were obtained similarly showed a strong linear relationship between the DE and ME (Mcal/kg of DM): ME = 0.9215 × DE − 0.1434 (R2 = 0.999, RMSE = 0.004, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope). The DE was strongly related to the ME for both genders: ME = 0.8621 × DE + 0.0808 (R2 = 0.9600, RMSE = 0.083, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope) and ME = 0.7785 × DE + 0.1546 (R2 = 0.971, RMSE = 0.070, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope) for male and female Hanwoo cattle, respectively. By BW, the simple linear regression similarly showed a strong relationship between the DE and ME for Hanwoo above and below 350 kg BW: ME = 0.9833 × DE − 0.2760 (R2 = 0.991, RMSE = 0.055, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope) and ME = 0.72975 × DE + 0.38744 (R2 = 0.913, RMSE = 0.100, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope), respectively. A multiple regression using the DE and dietary factors as independent variables did not improve the accuracy of the ME prediction (ME = 1.149 × DE − 0.045 × crude protein + 0.011 × neutral detergent fibre − 0.027 × acid detergent fibre + 0.683).

Abstract Multiple linear regression inaccurately computes the efficiency of energy use for protein and fat gain. The objective was to quantify efficiency of metabolizable energy use for protein and fat gain along with heats of product formation and support metabolism. A literature search was performed to compile data (31 studies, 214 treatment means) on metabolizable energy intake (MEI) and composition of empty body gain in growing steers and heifers. Data analyses were performed using R statistical package for mixed models with study as random variable. Linear regression of MEI on energy gain (EG; P &lt; 0.001; R2 = 0.627) resulted in an estimate of metabolizable energy for maintenance (MEm) of 156 kcal/kg.75 and efficiency of ME use for gain of 0.518. Linear regression of MEI on EG as protein and fat (P &lt; 0.001; R2 = 0.623) resulted in an estimate of MEm of 149 kcal/kg.75, and efficiency of protein (kp) and fat (kf) gain of 0.274 and 0.585, respectively, resulting in an overall efficiency of EG of 0.520. Nonlinear regression model (EG = kg*(MEI-MEm)) resulted in an estimate of MEm of 103 kcal/kg.75 and efficiency of EG of 0.342. The heat of product formation was assumed to be 0.48 (1 – 0.52) and the heat of support metabolism (HiEv) 0.18 (0.52 – 0.34). Multivariate regression was used to fit simultaneous models for EG as protein (EGp = (kp+HiEvp)*k*MEA) and fat (EGf = (kf+(0.18-HiEvp))*(1-k)*MEA). Estimates (P &lt; 0.001) of kp and kf were 0.12 ± 0.01 and 0.63 ± 0.02, and HiEvp and proportion of ME available for protein gain (k) were 0.11 ± 0.01 and 0.75 ± 0.01, respectively. The heat of product formation and support metabolism for protein were 0.77 and 0.11, and fat were 0.30 and 0.07, respectively. In conclusion, efficiency of ME use for protein was lesser than for fat gain, and heat of support metabolism was greater for protein than fat gain.

ABSTRACTThirty-two Friesian cows in early lactation were divided into four treatment groups to receive ad libitum a mixed diet consisting of silage (0·70) and grain-based concentrate (0·30). Fish meal was subsequently mixed into the diet at levels of 0, 40, 80 and 120 g/kg to provide crude protein concentration (g/kg dry matter) in the complete diets of 156, 181, 200 and 212 respectively. In the 2nd week after calving the yields of fat-corrected milk (FCM) were 28·5, 29·2, 32·0 and 34·9 kg/day for the four levels respectively; at this time, food intake was sufficient only to meet the calculated energy requirement for 15 kg FCM per day. Due to recurring problems with ketosis on the diet containing 120 g fish meal per kg, this treatment was terminated and the experiment continued for 15 weeks with the groups receiving 0, 40 and 80 g/kg fish meal supplements. During this time average yields of FCM were 23·5, 25·6 and 28-0 kg FCM per day respectively and energy intakes were calculated to be sufficient to meet the requirement for 18 kg FCM per day.It appeared possible to increase milk yield by stimulating fat mobilization through giving undegraded protein supplements to underfed cows in early lactation. However, when an excessive mobilization occurred with a high supplement, and when the animals were yielding 15 to 20 kg FCM more than their metabolizable energy intake was calculated to sustain, some cows became ketotic.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) concentrations in high-fiber ingredients fed to growing pigs. Twelve barrows with an initial body weight of 57.5 kg (SD = 5.7) were individually housed in metabolism crates. A replicated 6 × 3 incomplete Latin square design with 12 animals, 6 experimental diets and 3 periods was employed. A basal diet was composed of 75.0% corn and 22.7% soybean meal (SBM) as the sole energy sources. Four experimental diets were prepared by replacing 40% of corn and SBM with soybean hulls (SH), corn gluten feed (CGF), wheat bran (WB), or rice bran (RB). An additional diet was prepared by replacing 10% of corn and SBM with cashew nut hulls (CNH). Each period consisted of a 4-d adaptation period and a 4-d collection period, and the marker-to-marker procedure was used for total collection of feces and urine. The DE and ME values in RB (3,969 and 3,936 kcal/kg DM) were greater (P &lt; 0.05) than those in CGF (2,654 and 2,520 kcal/kg DM) and SH (2,492 and 2,541 kcal/kg DM) and the energy values in WB (3,162 and 3,118 kcal/kg DM) were not different from those in RB, CGF, or SH. The DE and ME values in CNH (350 and 572 kcal/kg DM) were less (P &lt; 0.05) than those in all other test ingredients. In conclusion, energy concentrations in RB were greatest among the high-fiber test ingredients, whereas CNH had the lowest values.

The objective of this study was to evaluate nutritional and energetic value of rice by-products, with or without phytase, using growing pigs. Thirty-six male pigs were housed in individual metabolic cages. Total collection of feces and urine was carried out in two periods of ten days: five days for adaptation and five days for collection. A randomized blocks design was used, considering the sampling period as a block, with five treatments and seven replicates. Two control diets (with and without phytase - Phy) were used in the digestibility calculations, the latter in order to evaluate the enzyme influence on energy digestibility of the tested ingredients. The control diet was replaced by 30% of one of the ingredients: defatted rice bran (DRB) with and without Phy and dephytinised defatted rice bran (DDRB). The use of Phy in the control diet did not influence DRB+Phy energy digestibility. Relative to DRB+Phy, dephytinised defatted rice bran had higher contents of ME and digestible protein but lower digestible P and Ca. Phy supplementation increased Ca and P utilization of DRB and improved energy and protein digestibility. The DRB without Phy showed the lowest digestibility coefficients for all responses. Metabolizable energy, digestible protein, phosphorus and calcium of DRB, DRB+Phy and DDRB were respectively, 2140, 2288 and 2519kcal kg-1; 79.25, 92.41 and 107.10g kg-1; 1.62, 3.41, and 2.11g kg-1 and 2.80, 3.79 and 2.90g kg-1.

ABSTRACT ‘Babassu’ mesocarp flour has been used by the pharmaceutical, human food and animal feed industries. However, there is lack of standardization in the production, as well as absence of information on the management of the product’s quality. Thus, the objective of this study was to dry the ‘babassu’ mesocarp in forced-air oven and solar dryer, adjust different mathematical models to the experimental data, as well as to quantify the levels of proteins and crude fiber of the produced flour. The criteria for the adjustment were the coefficient of determination, magnitude of the mean relative error, standard deviation of estimate and the residual distribution trend. Drying in the shortest time occurred in oven at 60 °C (370 min), leading to water content of 4.62%, while in the solar dryer the final water content was 8.07% in 6 days. The mathematical model Two Terms showed the best fit to the experimental data for oven drying and the Midilli model showed the best fit in solar dryer. There was an increase in protein content with the drying in solar dryer and oven at 40, 50 and 60 °C (1.36, 1.33, 1.15 and 1.37%, respectively) in relation to fresh mesocarp (0.88%). Drying in both oven and solar dryer promoted increase of protein in the flour.
