Ayrshire bull calves were utilized in two feeding trials with the following treatments in factorial design: indoors vs. pasture, whole milk vs. milk-replacer, 3 or 4 lb starter daily to 15 weeks of age in the first trial and 2 or 3 lb in the second. All calves received the same treatment after 15 weeks, fall pasture and winter drylot.The average daily body weight gain from 1 week of age to weaning at 130 ± 2 lb was 1.05 lb and did not differ appreciably among treatments. Starter intake was increased markedly by indoor and (or) milk-replacer feeding. Calves receiving milk-replacer indoors consumed an average of 1 lb starter per day; calves fed whole milk on pasture ate only 0.4 lb starter per day. Weight gains from weaning to 15 weeks of age on pasture were 1.5 lb/day for calves weaned from whole milk, and 1.2 lb/day for those previously fed milk-replacer. Starter levels had little effect on the performance of the pasture — whole milk group. Indoor rearing compared with pasture rearing during this period significantly decreased calf gains, the greatest reduction occurring from milk-replacer and (or) low starter level. Calf performance to 1 year of age did not differ as a result of preweaning liquid diet, starter levels, and in the first trial initial rearing environment (1.4 lb/day). The 2-lb starter level significantly decreased yearly gains for calves initially reared indoors compared with pasture.

Ayrshire bull calves were weaned from whole milk or milk-replacer at 7 weeks of age, and at two different body weights, namely 55 and 46 kg. A maximum of 1.82 kg starter was fed daily to 15 weeks of age and 1.82 kg grower concentrate to 180 days of age.Calf performance did not differ significantly by weaning at 7 weeks or 55 kg. Weight gains to weaning and to 15 weeks were significantly lower for calves weaned at 46 kg. The average 180-day body weights for calves weaned at 7 weeks, 55, and 46 kg were 150, 146, and 140 kg, respectively.Whole milk or milk-replacer feeding produced identical calf growth to 180 days of age. Milk-replacer tended to increase preweaning and decrease post-weaning growth of calves weaned at 46 kg compared with whole milk. The augmented preweaning starter intake by calves fed replacer is discussed in relation to the digestible energy content of milk-replacers. It is suggested that energy supplied by plant carbohydrates should not be included in replacers for early-weaned calves, due to the low digestibility of starch by calves until 3 or 4 weeks of age.

Thirty-two male Holstein calves, beginning at 1 wk of age, were used to estimate differences in weight gain between two feeding levels and two feeding frequencies over a period of 3 wk. Calves were randomly assigned to one of the following four treatments: whole milk (WM) fed at 10% of body weight (BW) twice a day; WM fed at 10% BW, three times a day; WM fed at 12% of BW, in two feedings per day, or WM fed at 12% of BW, in three feedings per day. Body weight gains and feed conversions were 279 and 437 g per day and 12.02 and 9.51 kg whole milk per kilogram of gain for the 10 and 12% levels of feeding, respectively. There was a trend towards increased rate of gain and improved feed efficiency when calves were fed twice compared to three times a day. Cost of medication was not influenced by level or frequency of feeding. It was concluded from this study that feeding whole milk at 12% of body weight was preferable to feeding at the 10% level of intake. Key words: Milk feeding, level, frequency, dairy calves

The objective of the study was to evaluate feeding effect of microparticle protein derived from soybean meal and fish meal combined with Lactobacillus sp. at 1.2 mL on physiological condition of digestive tract and productivity of broiler. Total of 192 broiler, with initial body weight was 481.0 ± 67.2 g, given dietary treatment starting on day 21 until day 42. The experiment was assigned in a completely randomized design with 8 treatments and 4 replications. Dietary treatment were 21% intact protein (T0), 18% intact protein (T1), 21% microparticle protein (T2), 18% microparticle protein (T3), T0+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T4), T1+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T5), T2+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T6), T3+Lactobacillus sp.1.2 mL (T7). Parameters measured were total ileal lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Coliform and pH, rate of passage, daily body weight gain (DWG) and also carcass weight. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and followed by Duncan multiple range test (P<0.05). Experimental results showed that microparticle protein diet added with Lactobacillus sp. (P<0.05) increased total LAB and DWG, but decreased Coliform population, and slowed down the rate of passage. However, carcass weight was not significantly affected by treatments. Feeding microparticle protein (18%) with addition of Lactobacillus sp. (1.2 mL) can improve to be better condition of digestive tract based on higher LAB and lower Coliform populations, and increase daily body weight gain with the same carcass weight.

Twelve microsatellite markers on chromosome 6 were analyzed in German Holstein population to detect and locate QTL affecting daily body weight gain (DBWG). The results indicate promising location for QTL controlling daily body weight gain trait on chromosome 6. Where, three markers BMS2508 BM3026 and TGLA37 at three different positions in a distance 15.2 cM on BTA6 were associated with significant effects for daily body weight gain trait (DBWG). Comparison between this finding and previously identified QTL support the location of a QTL for growth traits on chromosome 6, where a significant QTL for birth and yearling weight was previously identified on chromosome 6 tightly close to marker BM3026. Finding from this study could be used in subsequent fine-mapping work and applied to marker-assisted selection (MAS) of production traits.

ABSTRAK. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengevaluasi kinerja pertumbuhan sapi persilangan Belgian Blue (BB) dan sapi Peranakan Ongole (PO) pada turunan pertama (F1). Sapi persilangan (BB dan PO) yang digunakan sebanyak 15 ekor terdiri atas jantan 6 ekor dan betina 9 ekor, selain itu digunakan 8 ekor sapi PO betina yang dipelihara di Balai Embrio Ternak (BET) Cipelang Bogor. Peubah yang diamati adalah bobot lahir (BW), bobot sapih (WW) 205 hari, bobot 1 tahun (YW), pertambahan bobot badan harian dari lahir (GBW) sampai sapih (GWW) dan pertambahan bobot badan harian dari sapih (GWW) sampai umur 1 tahun (GYW). Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan perbedaan antar sapi silangan (BB-PO) dengan sapi PO dilakukan uji t. Hasil analisis bobot badan dan pertumbuhan menunjukkan bahwa, bobot badan sapi silangan BB dan PO lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan sapi PO pada WW 205 hari (165,2±21,3 kg dan 115±15,2 kg), YW (365 hari) (240,7±28,1 kg dan 194,9±26,1 kg) dan GBW sampai GWW (0,675±0,097 kg dan 0,441±0,059 kg). BW dan GWW sampai GYW tidak berbeda antara sapi silangan BB-PO dengan PO. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa program cross-breeding sapi BB dengan PO dapat meningkatkan kinerja bobot badan dan pertumbuhan.  (Growth performance evaluation of belgian blue and ongole crossbreed) ABSTRACT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of cross-breeding of Belgian Blue (BB) and Ongole Grade (PO) cattle in the first generation (F1). Crossbred of BB and PO cattle used as many as 15 individuals consisting of 6 males and 9 females, also, 8 individual PO females are used which are kept in the Livestock Embryo Center (BET) Cipelang, Bogor. The observed variables were birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW) 205 days, 1-year weight (YW) 365 days, daily body weight gain from birth (GBW) to weaning (GWW) and daily body weight gain from weaning (GWW) until the age of 1 year (GYW). Data were analyzed descriptively and the difference between cross-breeding (BB-PO) cattle and PO cattle was analyzed by t-test. The results of body weight and growth analysis showed that crossbred BB and PO cattle were higher than PO cattle at WW 205 days (165.2 ± 21.3 kg and 115 ± 15.2 kg), YW (365 days) (240.7 ± 28.1 kg and 194.9 ± 26.1 kg ) and GBW to GWW (0.675 ± 0.097 kg and 0.441 ± 0.059 kg). BW and GWW to GYW do not differ between crossbred BB-PO and PO cattle. The results of this study indicate that the cross-breeding program for BB cattle with PO cattle breeds can improve the performance of body weight and growth.

The study aims to evaluated thedetermine the effect of gave fermented corncob by probiotic MOIYL to performance of local rabbit. Research conducted at DesaBandar Klippa Deli Serdang and Agriculture Faculty of North Sumatera University, inJanuary – March 2018. The study used design experiment by completely randomizeddesign (CDR), which consists of 4 treatments and five replications. The treatmentconsisted of ration P0= unfermented ,P1 (10% corn cob fermented and 20%unfermented), P2 (20% corn cob fermented and 10% unfermented), and P3 (30% corncob fermented). Variable measured were feed consumption, daily body weight gain,feed conversion ratio and income over feed cost.The results showed that fermented ofcorn cob with probiotics MOIYL provide a significant effect (P<0,05) towards bodyweight gain, consumption and Income Over Feed Cost and does not have an effect (P>0.05) on the value of conversion. The conclusion from the results of this study is theprovision of fermented corn cobs using MOIYL can increase body weight gain,consumption and Income Over Feed Cost, and tend to reduce the value of feedconversion.

ABSTRAKKambing Nubian belum banyak dipeliharan dan diteliti di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pertumbuhan prasapih kambing Nubian. Penelitian dilakukan di Commerciall Zone and Animal Laboratory (CZAL) Jurusan Peternakan Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Bengkulu. Penelitian menggunakan 12 ekor anak kambing, 7 jantan dan 5 betina. Pengamatan pertumbuhan dilakukan selama 2 bulan. Variabel yang diamati berupa bobot badan, PBB, PBBH, panjang badan, lingkar dada, tinggi gumba, tinggi pinggul, temperatur rektal, dan pulus. Penelitian ini menggunakan t-test untuk membandingkan pertumbuhan anak kambing jantan dan betina. Data dianalisis menggunakan software SPSS ver 23. Hasil penelitian menunjukaan bahwa perbedaan bobot badan anak kambing Nubian jantan dan betina hanya terjadi pada bobot lahir dan bobot umur 30 hari. Tidak terdapat perbedaan pertambahan bobot badan dan pertambahan bobot badan harian antara anak kambing jantan dan betina pada seluruh umur. Status fisiologis anak kambing Nubian jantan dan betina tidak terdapat perbedaan. Kesimpulan penelitan bahwa anak kambing Nubian jantan dan betina memiliki kemampuan pertumbuhan yang sama. Kata kunci: Pertumbuhan, Nubian, Prasapih, Kambing Perah ABSTRACTNubian goats have not been keeped and observed in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the growth of Nubian kids pre-weaning. The research was conducted at the Commerciall Zone and Animal Laboratory (CZAL) Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu. The study used 12 goats, 7 males and 5 females. The Observation of growth is carried out for 2 months. Variables observed were body weight, weight gain, ADG, body length, chest circumference, gumba height, hip height, rectal temperature, and pulses. This study used a t-test to compare the growth of male and female goat kids. Data were analyzed using SPSS software ver 23. The results showed that the differences in body weight of male and female Nubian kid goats only occurred in birth weight and age at 30 days. There were no differences in body weight gain and daily body weight gain between male and female goats at all ages. The physiological status of male and female Nubian goat kids has no difference. The research conclusion is that male and female Nubian goats have the same growth ability. Keywords: Growth, Nubian, Preweaning, Dairy Goat
