One of the most cited papers in the geological sciences has been that of Albee and Bence on the use of empirical " α -factors" to correct quantitative electron microprobe data. During the past 25 years this method has remained the most commonly used correction for geological samples, despite the facts that few investigators have actually determined empirical α-factors, but instead employ tables of calculated α-factors using one of the conventional "ZAF" correction programs; a number of investigators have shown that the assumption that an α-factor is constant in binary systems where there are large matrix corrections is incorrect (e.g, 2-3); and the procedure’s desirability in terms of program size and computational speed is much less important today because of developments in computing capabilities. The question thus exists whether it is time to honorably retire the Bence-Albee procedure and turn to more modern, robust correction methods. This paper proposes that, although it is perhaps time to retire the original Bence-Albee procedure, it should be replaced by a similar method based on compositiondependent polynomial α-factor expressions.

Reference samples of three prominent pumice units of Glacier Peak tephra collected east of the volcano within a distance of 100 km are similar petrographically to units described by earlier workers. Glass shards isolated from these samples were analyzed by electron microprobe to determine the content of Ca, Fe, and K. Resulting data, plus those published for two other references samples, provide a basis for attributing certain outlying tephra layers from 14 locations in eastern Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana to eruptions of Glacier Peak. Ten of the samples have properties of both Glacier Peak tephra and Mount St. Helens set J tephra, but proportions of Ca:Fe:K in glass shards indicate that 9 of the 10 outlying samples came from Glacier Peak, whereas one is assigned to Mount St. Helens set J. The remaining six outlying samples, all from southeastern Washington, contain cummingtonite phenocrysts and are chemically similar to some parts of Mount St. Helens tephra sets that are older than 12,000 BP.

ABSTRACTPyrochlore-rich ceramics containing additional zirconolite, brannerite and rutile have been developed for immobilizing excess weapons plutonium. This study reports data for a ceramic containing small amounts of Al and Mo in addition to the major oxide components of Ti, U, Ca, Hf, Gd and Ce. Hafnium and Gd are added as neutron absorbers, Al and Mo represent impurities. Quantitative electron microprobe data demonstrate that UO2 is strongly partitioned into brannerite (45 wt%), which is present as euhedral crystals with inclusions of unreacted UO2. Pyrochlore forms the groundmass and has an average UO2 content of 28 wt%. Zirconolite contains only 15 wt% UO2, but is significantly more effective in accommodating Hf and Gd than both brannerite and pyrochlore. Zirconolite incorporates U together with Hf and Ce in one structural site, whereas brannerite and pyrochlore accommodate U with Gd in a site that is distinct from that occupied by Hf. Incorporation of Gd into zirconolite takes place via a coupled substitution involving Al, thus explaining the high Al2O3 contents (3 wt%). Molybdenum was not detected in the major oxides, and it might be present in the accessory rutile. Although the studied waste form was designed to incorporate Pu, the present dataset is also valuable because immobilization of highly fissile U (e.g., U-233) might need to be considered in the future.
