Background and objective: The present study assesses the relationship between hyperuricemia and pulse pressure (PP) in non-diabetic Korean adults. Material and methods: Data from 5122 subjects (2251 men and 2871 women) in the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII-2, 2017) were analyzed. Results: Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and PP were significant factors determining the odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia (uric acid ≥7.0 mg/dL in men or ≥6.0 mg/dL in women) in men and the overall population. In women, SBP, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and PP were not significant factors determining the OR for hyperuricemia. After adjusting for related variables, the OR of hyperuricemia was significantly higher in the high PP group (PP >60.0 mmHg) for men (OR, 1.760; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.152--2.688) and the overall population (OR, 1.557; 95% CI, 1.132--2.140) compared with the normal PP group, but this trend was not seen in women (OR, 1.060; 95% CI, 0.646--1.740). Conclusions: Hyperuricemia was positively associated with PP in non-diabetic Korean men but not in women.

Abstract Background The objective of this study was to identify conditional relationships between multiple metal biomarkers that predict systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the non-institutionalized United States adult population below the age of 60. Methods We used inorganic exposure biomarker data and blood pressure data from three cycles (1999–2004) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to construct regression trees for blood pressure among adults ages 20–60 (adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, race, and smoking status) to identify predictors of systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). We also considered relationships among non-Hispanic black, Mexican-American, and white adults separately. Results The following metal exposure biomarkers were conditionally predictive of SBP and/or DBP in the full sample: antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), cesium (Cs), lead (Pb), tungsten (W) and molybdenum (Mo). The highest average SBP (> 120 mmHg) was observed among those with low Sb (≤ 0.21 μg/dL) high Cd (> 0.22 μg/g creatinine) and high Pb (> 2.55 μg/dL) biomarkers. Those with the highest average DBP had high urinary W levels (> 0.10 μg/g creatinine) in combination with either urinary Sb > 0.17 μg/g creatinine or those with urinary Sb ≤ 0.17 μg/g creatinine, but with high blood Pb levels (> 1.35 μg/dL). Predictors differed by ethnicity, with Cd as the main predictor of SBP among non-Hispanic black adults, and Pb not selected by the algorithm as a predictor of SBP among non-Hispanic white adults. Conclusions Combinations of metal biomarkers have different apparent relationships with blood pressure. Additional research in toxicological experimental models and in epidemiological studies is warranted to evaluate the suggested possible toxicological interactions between Sb, Cd, and Pb; and between W, Sb, and Pb; for cardiovascular (e.g., blood pressure) health. We also think future epidemiological research on inorganic exposure sets in relation to health outcomes like blood pressure might benefit from stratification by race and ethnicity.

Abstract Background Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that may associate with other chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. We observed the effects of blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (FBG), haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and insulin on asthma in Korean adults. Methods Data from 5045 adults were taken from the 2015 Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and analysed using a multiple logistic regression model. Results By age, the probability of asthma occurrence was 1.02 times higher (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.02 [95% CI 1.01 to 1.03]). Specifically, asthma occurrence was increased in individuals >66 years of age (aOR 2.40 [95% CI 1.22 to 4.72]). The probability of asthma occurrence in females was higher than in males (aOR 1.73 [95% CI 1.02 to 2.84]). Hypertension and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were found to increase the probability of asthma occurrence by 1.43- and 1.03-fold, respectively. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was another factor that increased with the occurrence of asthma (aOR 1.75 [95% CI 1.06 to 3.02]). The probability of asthma occurrence was not increased with the FBG level, whereas HbA1c (aOR 1.38 [95% CI 1.03 to 1.84]) and insulin levels (aOR 1.02 [95% CI 1.01 to 1.04]) were shown to increase the occurrence of asthma. Conclusions Age, sex, hypertension, SBP, DM, HbA1c and insulin levels are all factors that may influence the occurrence of asthma in Korean adults. In particular, hypertension and diabetes emerge from the present study as potential associated factors for the development of asthma.
