Extensive computer simulation and performance analysis and assessment have been carried out for the dynamic positioning control of a large, commercial ocean mining ship / pipe system, and selective results are presented. It is tentatively concluded that automatic position control, with a manual override option, of a 300,000-ton ship with 18 thrusters of 4500 hp and an 18,000 ft long lift pipe system would be feasible for commercial operations of a preliminary mining system in the Pacific Ocean. The preliminary system employs a self-propelled miner. For the feasibility study, we have performed the following: the thruster power estimate, a subsequent selection of an azimuthing ship thruster system configuration, steady-state and dynamic motion of the ship-pipe system, track-keeping, turning and station-keeping control, design of an automatic control system, and nonlinear control simulation during mining operations and selective contingency situations. For the development of commercial systems, the small-size, test-mining system does not provide all the design data. It is much larger, and subsequently, requires development of more sophisticated technology and engineering capabilities. The present method of analysis and simulation can be applied to many other mining system analyses, and to the position keeping control of deepsea drilling systems, and deepsea piplaying.

Abstract In the paper, different approaches for compliance control for human oriented robots are revealed. The approaches based on the non- antagonistic and antagonistic actuation are compared. In addition, an approach is investigated in this work for the compliance and the position control in the joint by means of antagonistic actuation. It is based on the capability of the joint with torsion leaf springs to adjust its stiffness. Models of joint stiffness are presented in this paper with antagonistic and non-antagonistic influence of the spring forces on the joint motion. The stiffness and the position control possibilities are investigated and the opportunity for their decoupling as well. Some results of numerical experiments are presented in the paper too.

Sustainability of mining companies is of of high concern. The problem is specifically acute at companies that are monotownor monosettlement-forming. Sustainability of a mine depends in many ways on product quality and production resource-intensity. This article discusses formation of mineral quality indexes in terms of an open pit chrysotile mine. The studies took into account specific features of operation procedures implemented by each structural division of the mine. The analysis has found managerial and technological inconsistencies which affect quality and marketable product output, as well as efficiency of the mine in whole. The background for efficiency enhancement at a company is, by the authors’ opinion, consolidation of personnel subject to the single development strategy, namely: improvement of production and control efficiency, as well as use of available reserves and resources by means of better setup for production. The proposed approaches to planning mining operations and forming mineral quality allow higher quality of processing stock. In addition, a new model proposed for interaction between structural divisions of a mining company ensures improvement of general production indexes.
