Taxonomic review of Angarotipula Savchenko, (Diptera: Tipulidae) in North America

AbstractIn this paper, Angarotipula Savchenko, 1961 (Diptera: Tipulidae) is redescribed and differentiated from other genera in Tipulidae and subgenera of Tipula Linnaeus, 1758, where this taxon was previously placed. Angarotipula tumidicornis (Lundström, 1907) is synonymised with Angarotipula parrioides (Alexander, 1919) (new synonym), the latter is a junior synonym. A lectotype is designated for A. tumidicornis. The female and first instar of Angarotipula illustris (Doane, 1901) and the pupa of A. tumidicornis are described and illustrated for the first time. Keys to adults, larvae, and pupae of the two North American species are presented. A close relationship between Angarotipula and Prionocera Loew, 1844 is suggested based on shared character states.

Most works about Climaciella brunnea (Say) deal with predation and parasitoidism on wolf spiders (Lycosidae), or records of populations that mimic vespid wasps (Polistes spp.). Knowledge on immature mantispids is scarce, particularly about pupae. Currently, a key by Hoffman and Brushwein provides information on larvae and pupae of several North American species. Herein, the pupa of C. brunnea is described for the first time, on the basis of a specimen from central Mexico, and its position in the available key is proposed,. The pupa of Plega yucatanae Parker & Stange from southeastern Mexico is also incorporated to the key on the basis of a published description.

Anisandrus maiche Stark, an ambrosia beetle native to Asia, is reported for the first time in North America based on specimens from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. This is the twentieth species of exotic Xyleborina documented in North America. This species, along with three others occurring in North America, were formerly placed in Xyleborus Eichhoff, but currently are assigned to Anisandrus Ferrari. Descriptions of generic characters used to separate Anisandrus from Xyleborus, a re-description of the female A. maiche, and an illustrated key to the four North American species of Anisandrus are presented.

All macropterous species of Aptilotus Mik are keyed, with descriptions of two new macropterous North American species, Aptilotus pogophallus and A. nigriphallus. New distributional records are given for other North American species, and brachyptery is noted for the first time in A. luctuosus (Spuler). Four new macropterous species of Aptilotus (glabrifrons, spinistylus, rufiscapus, and binotatus are described from Nepal. The relationships between the North American and Nepalese species are discussed. Minocellina Papp is synonomized with Aptilotus, and the two species formerly in Minocellina, A. thaii (Papp) and A. besucheti (Papp), are thus given as new combinations. Limosina carbonicolor Richards, from Ethiopia, is redescribed and transferred to Aptilotus.

AbstractThis paper treats taxonomically 10 North American species of the genus Pardosa. The coloradensis group contains only the three species Pardosa metlakatla Emerton, 1917, Pardosa coloradensis Banks, 1894, and Pardosa ontariensis Gertsch, 1933 (= Pardosa pristina Fox, 1937, new synonym). The xerampelina group contains three Nearctic species, namely, Pardosa diuturna Fox, 1937, Pardosa xerampelina (Keyserling, 1877) (= Pardosops impavidula Roewer, 1954, new synonym), and Pardosa nordicolens Chamberlin and Ivie, 1947. The lapponica group comprises the Holarctic species Pardosa lapponica (Thorell, 1872) (= Pardosa harperi Bishop, 1949, new synonym) and the Nearctic Pardosa concinna (Thorell, 1877). The tesquorum group is composed of the Holarctic species Pardosa tesquorum (Odenwall, 1901) and the Nearctic Pardosa mulaiki Gertsch, 1934.

North American species of the genera Aspidoglossa Putzeys, Semiardistomis Kult and Ardistomis Putzeys, which constitute the subtribe Ardistomina in the tribe Clivinini, are reviewed. The five species are keyed, redescribed and notes are provided about their distribution and habitat requirements. Larval character states of the subtribe are described for the first time based on first instar of Semiardistomis viridis (Say). Illustrations of some of the most important morphological features as well as distribution maps are included. The species known as Ardistomis morio (Dejean) is redescribed from the holotype. Evidence is presented which establishes that this species does not belong to the genus Ardistomis, or to the subtribe Ardistomina, and that the sole specimen known was probably collected in the Neotropical Region, not in the Nearctic Region. The species is returned to the genus Clivina in which it was originally described.

The four North American species of Evernia, E. divaricata (L.) Ach., E. mesomorpha Nyl., E. perfragilis Llano, and E. prunastri (L.) Ach., are discussed from the standpoint of taxonomy, distribution, and ecology. The North American distributions of E. divaricata and E. perfragilis are mapped for the first time. A puzzling lichen found on the ground in alpine areas from New Mexico north to Alberta is regarded as an ecological variant of E. divaricata.

AbstractThe subgenus Steropus Dejean of the genus Pterostichus Bonelli (Coleoptera: Carabidae) is redefined. The subgenus includes 24 species occurring in the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions. Eight species previously included in Steropus, P. catalonicus K. Daniel, P. ferreri (Español andMateu), P. galaecianus Lauffer, P. ghilianii (Putzeys), P. globosus (Fabricius), P. insidiatrix (Piochard de la Brûlerie), P. madidus (Fabricius), and P. riffensis (Antoine), are transferred to the subgenus Corax Putzeys (formerly considered as a junior synonym of Steropus) which is recognized as a valid taxon. Refonia Casey, with two North American species, Eosteropus Tschitschérine (type-species: Platysma creperum Tschitschérine, present designation), with four Asiatic species, and Steropinus Lutshnik, with one Asiatic species, are placed in synonymy with Steropus. Adult and larval character states of the subgenus Steropus are described. Larvae of Steropus are synapomorphic with those of P. (Corax) madidus and P. (Feronidius) melas Creutzer in having the mandible strongly curved with wide retinaculum in the first instar and a membranous area on antennomere I.

African machairodont specimens previously referred to three species of Megantereon are considered to represent a single species in turn argued to be conspecific with the Eurasian species Megantereon cultridens (Cuvier). The area of origin of Megantereon remains unclear, but doubt is expressed about claims for an earliest appearance of the genus in North America. It is probable that the North American species M. hesperus is a junior synonym of M. cultridens.
