Studies on the lichen genus Evernia in North America

The four North American species of Evernia, E. divaricata (L.) Ach., E. mesomorpha Nyl., E. perfragilis Llano, and E. prunastri (L.) Ach., are discussed from the standpoint of taxonomy, distribution, and ecology. The North American distributions of E. divaricata and E. perfragilis are mapped for the first time. A puzzling lichen found on the ground in alpine areas from New Mexico north to Alberta is regarded as an ecological variant of E. divaricata.

All macropterous species of Aptilotus Mik are keyed, with descriptions of two new macropterous North American species, Aptilotus pogophallus and A. nigriphallus. New distributional records are given for other North American species, and brachyptery is noted for the first time in A. luctuosus (Spuler). Four new macropterous species of Aptilotus (glabrifrons, spinistylus, rufiscapus, and binotatus are described from Nepal. The relationships between the North American and Nepalese species are discussed. Minocellina Papp is synonomized with Aptilotus, and the two species formerly in Minocellina, A. thaii (Papp) and A. besucheti (Papp), are thus given as new combinations. Limosina carbonicolor Richards, from Ethiopia, is redescribed and transferred to Aptilotus.

Abstract The description of a new species of an erymid lobster, Stenodactylina beardi, from the Upper Cretaceous Haslam Formation of the Nanaimo Group on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, brings to fifteen the number of Erymidae in North America. The species are arrayed within five genera based upon configuration of carapace groove morphology, resulting in two new combinations, Stenodactylina bordenensis (Copeland, 1960) and S. foersteri (Feldmann, 1979). The new species exhibits for the first time a male pleopod and accessory structures within Erymoidea. We also provide a list of the North American species of Erymoidea.

AbstractMorphological and distributional data are presented for the North American species of the genera Phreatobrachypoda Cook, 1963 and Bharatalbia Cook, 1967. These mites live in gravel deposits associated with riffle areas and the hyporheic zone of streams. Female adults of Phreatobrachypoda multlpora Cook are redescribed, and males of this species are described for the first time. Adults of P. robusta Cook and P. acuta Habeeb are redescribed, and males and females of these two species are correctly correlated for the first time. Male and female adults of two new species of Phreatobrachypoda are described. The male mite described as Japonaxonopsis nuiakiensis Imamura is reassigned to Phreatobrachypoda, and the name Japonaxonopsis becomes a junior synonym of Phreatobrachypoda. Two subgenera, Phreatobrachypoda (s.s.) and Ameribrachypoda subgen.nov., are proposed and diagnosed based on the morphology of the dorsal shield, genital field, and fourth pair of legs of males. A key to known species of die genus is presented. Male and female adults of two new species of Bharatalbia (Japnnalbia) are described, and the deutonymph of one of these species is correlated with adults and described. This is the first reported occurrence of this genus in North America.All North American species of Phreatobrachypoda and Bharatalbia inhabit coastal areas in Oregon and California. The highly disjunct distributions of these genera suggest that species of both were widespread throughout western North America and eastern Eurasia during the Tertiary Era, but survived the Pleistocene only in isolated temperate refugia well beyond the southern limit of glaciers.

AbstractNorth American species of Agabus Leach of the elongatus-, zetterstedti-, and confinis-groups, as defined by Larson (1989), are revised. Study of character state distribution indicates that the elongatus- and zetterstedti-groups are clades within the confinis-group but the names are retained in this paper to maintain consistency. Twenty species belonging to this complex occur in North America, namely: elongatus-group with A. elongatus Gyllenhal and A. inexspectatus Nilsson; zetterstedti-group with A. zetterstedti Thomson; and the confinis-group with A. thomsoni (J. Sahlberg), A. moestus (Curtis), A. clypealis (Thomson), A. phaeopterus (Kirby), A. immaturus sp.nov. (Great Lakes and Maritime Provinces regions), A. canadensis Fall, A. audeni Wallis, A. mackenziensis sp.nov. (northwestern Canada), A. bicolor (Kirby), A. subfuscatus Sharp, A. discolor (Harris), A. approximate Fall, A. kootenai sp.nov. (southwestern Canada and northwestern United States), A. inscriptus (Crotch), A. smithi Brown, A. sasquatch sp.nov. (alpine areas of California and Nevada), and A. confinis (Gyllenhal). For each species the following information is provided: synonymy; description and illustration of taxonomically useful characters; notes on relationships, variation, distribution, and ecology; and a map of North American collection localities. A key to the North American species of the confinis-group is presented. Lectotypes are designated for A. subfuscatus Sharp, Gaurodytes inscriptus Crotch, G. ovoideus Crotch, and G. longulus LeConte.

AbstractIps calligraphus (Germar), I. ponderosae Swaine and I. interstitialis (Eichhoff) represent one variable species with the oldest name, Ips calligraphus (Germar) taking precedence. Ips calligraphus can always be recognized by the six spines on each side of the declivity. All other species in North America have less than six spines on each side.

AbstractThe genus Ips is one of four closely related genera in the tribe Ipini, sub-tribe Ipina (De Geer 1775, Balachowsky 1949, Nunberg 1954, Hopping 1963). There are now 32 species of Ips recognized in North America, with a few more as yet undescribed. This paper defines the groups of closely related species with observations on the group relationships of species from other parts of the world. Work is in progress to define the North American species in each group.

A new species, Pholis clemensi, referred to the family Pholidae, is named and described from 12 specimens taken in southern British Columbia waters and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Pholis clemensi is compared with other members of the genus, and a key is given to the North American species.

New distributional records, new larval host records, various collecting notes, and observations are reported for the North American species of the tribe Agallissini LeConte, 1873 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae): Agallissus lepturoides (Duponchel & Chevrolat, 1841), Osmopleura chamaeropis (Horn, 1893), and Zagymnus clerinus (LeConte, 1873). The species are illustrated and distribution maps are provided.

The Byrrhidæ of this continent have received a comparatively small share of attention at the hands of systematists for many years, so that it is not at all surprising to find novelties among recently-collected material. Two new forms of the genus Pedilophorus have recently been detected among the accumulations in my cabinet, both of them from the west; no doubt still others remain to reward explorers of the mountain ranges and of the northern districts. The European fauna contains ten species, while but four were previously known from North America.

Most works about Climaciella brunnea (Say) deal with predation and parasitoidism on wolf spiders (Lycosidae), or records of populations that mimic vespid wasps (Polistes spp.). Knowledge on immature mantispids is scarce, particularly about pupae. Currently, a key by Hoffman and Brushwein provides information on larvae and pupae of several North American species. Herein, the pupa of C. brunnea is described for the first time, on the basis of a specimen from central Mexico, and its position in the available key is proposed,. The pupa of Plega yucatanae Parker & Stange from southeastern Mexico is also incorporated to the key on the basis of a published description.
