Review of the Ocalea group of genera (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae) in Canada and Alaska: new taxa, bionomics, and distribution

AbstractA review of the Nearctic genera and Canadian and Alaskan species of the Ocalea group is presented. Ten genera are treated, with five erected as new: Alfocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: A. montana Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Betocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: B. pacifica Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Gennadota Casey (reinstated), Longipeltina Bernhauer, Megocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: M. lemieuxi Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Metocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: M. lindgreni Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Neoisoglossa (Casey) (nomen novum), Neothetalia Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: N. nimia (Casey)), Ocalea Erichson (restricted definition), and Parocalea Bernhauer. Twenty-four species of the Ocalea group are here recognized in the Nearctic region, fourteen of which occur in Canada. Six new species are described from western Canada and Alaska: Neothetalia smetanai Klimaszewski sp. nov. (Canada: British Columbia), Neothetalia canadiana Klimaszewski sp. nov. (Canada: British Columbia, Yukon Territory; United States: Alaska), Betocalea pacifica (Canada: British Columbia), Alfocalea montana (Canada: Alberta, British Columbia), Metocalea lindgreni (Canada: British Columbia), and Megocalea lemieuxi (Canada: British Columbia). The first record of Neoisoglossa agnita (Casey) in Alberta is provided. Two nominal species, Atheta (Athetalia) bicarniceps Casey (= Neoisoglossa) and Isoglossa grandicollis (Casey) (= Neoisoglossa), are here synonymized with Neoisoglossa arcuata (Casey). Aleochara pallitarsis Kirby has been transferred to the genus Neothetalia and is newly recorded from Alaska and British Columbia. Ocalea columbiana Klimaszewski has been transferred to Neothetalia and is newly recorded from Alaska. Neothetalia pallitarsis was formerly recorded from an unknown locality in North America and Neothetalia columbiana from the Carmanah Valley on Vancouver Island. Neothetalia nimia is newly recorded from Alaska. A new generic classification is proposed to accommodate species of the Nearctic Ocalea group. New data are provided on the systematics, relationships, bionomics, and distribution of the Nearctic species and genera of America north of Mexico. Diagnoses, colour images of entire bodies, and line illustrations of genital features are provided for those Canadian and Alaskan species that were not formerly illustrated, and their collection localities are plotted on maps. A key to Nearctic genera of the Ocalea group and the species occurring in Canada and Alaska is presented. The lectotypes have been designated for the following nominal species because the original series consisted of syntypes or represented mixed species or both sexes but with males bearing a better diagnostic set of characters: Aleochara picata Stephens (= Ocalea), Atheta (Athetalia) bicarniceps, Atheta (Athetalia) nimia Casey (= Neothetalia), Atheta (Athetalia) repensa Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Isoglossa arcuata Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea agnita Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea franciscana Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea fusca Fenyes (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea grandicollis Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Pyroglossa grossa Bernhauer, Rheobioma disjuncta Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Rheobioma marcida Casey (= Neoisoglossa), and Rheobioma terrena Casey (= Neoisoglossa).

Extensive collecting and dissecting of live material shows that eight species of Oxyloma occur in southern and western Canada. Oxyloma haydeni is the common species across the Prairies from northern Ontario to southern Alberta. Oxyloma kanabensis occurs west of Edmonton, east of the Continental Divide and north of Sundre, while O. nuttalliana occurs west of the Continental Divide in southern British Columbia. Oxyloma groenlandica is found in the Yukon Territory and in the intermontane valleys in interior British Columbia. Oxyloma hawkinsi occurs sparsely, centred in the Okanagan area, but also persists as a probable remnant of the Hypsithermal interval at Exshaw, Alberta. Oxyloma retusa and O. gouldi are confined to the southern portions of Ontario and Quebec.A new species, Oxyloma missoula, occurs in and adjacent to the areas occupied by the former Pluvial Lake Bonneville and Glacial Lake Missoula. All the species could have survived from before the last Wisconsinan ice advance since their distributions straddle the boundary of the glaciated area.

AbstractChlorita nearctica is described from the Yukon Territory and is the first member of its genus found in the New World. A synopsis is presented to the Old World species of Chlorita Fieber, 1866 (Typhlocybinae, tribe Empoascini). A new typhlocybine tribe Forcipatini is created for Forcipata DeLong & Caldwell, 1936 and Notus Fieber, 1866. A synopsis of the genus Notus is presented, with Curta as a subgenus containing only the type species. Notus isolatus sp.nov. is described from Drummond Island, Michigan, in Lake Huron and from Quebec. A synopsis of the genus Forcipata DeLong & Caldwell is presented; all species belong to a single subgenus. Five new species are described: F. forficula from Florida, F. ips from Alaska and Yukon, F. montana from the mountains of British Columbia and Montana, and F. unica and F. xlix from Wisconsin. The New World species of the forcipatine genera are keyed.

An unusually large specimen of the rare digitate to bladed Aulocopella winnipegensis Rauff and three relatively normal sized specimens of ashtray-shaped Hudsonospongia? sp. constitute the first record of demosponges from the Upper Ordovician Beaverfoot Formation in southeastern British Columbia and the first record of these taxa from western Canada. Gross form and canal structure are well preserved, but dolomitization and (or) coarse microsphaeroidal silicification have obliterated spicules and other structural details. We interpret these sponges as epifaunal recliners, without means of attachment to the substrate, a life mode rarely encountered in the modern sponge biota.

Chromosome numbers are reported for six moss species from western Canada, four from British Columbia, two from Alberta. These give data on chromosome numbers from new localities in Canada for populations of five species and the first record for Kiaeria starkei from Canada. Chromosome numbers reported are n = 13, Grimmia afftnis; n = 14, Kiaeria starkei; n = 14 (13 + m), Dicranum scoparium; n = 20, Bryum pseudotriquetrum; n = 11, Ptilium crista-castrensis; and n = 6, Hypnum circinale.

The ammonite species Puzosia (Mesopuzosia) densicostata Matsumoto, Kitchinites (Neopuzosia) japonicus Spath, Anapachydiscus cf. A. nelchinensis Jones, Menuites cf. M. menu (Forbes), Submortoniceras chicoense (Trask), and Baculites cf. B. boulei Collignon are described from Santonian–Campanian strata of western Canada and northwestern United States. Stratigraphic occurrences and ranges of the species are summarized and those taxa important for correlation with other areas in the north Pacific region are noted.

AbstractThe cave-living and monobasic fungus gnat genusSpeoleptaEdwards is reviewed with a description of the first Nearctic species,Speolepta vockerothisp. nov., from Canada (caves in Ontario and British Columbia) and the United States (Alaska). Its morphology, life history, and biology are documented and compared with the single European speciesSpeolepta leptogaster(Winnertz). A further new species,Speolepta orientalissp.nov., is described based on a single male from northern Vietnam, representing the first record of this genus from the Oriental Region.

A Symbos skull fragment from Pleistocene deposits of northern British Columbia constitutes the first record of that genus for the province. In Canada, remains of this large muskox have been collected previously in western Yukon and southeastern Saskatchewan. Most of the other known specimens have been found in Alaska and the central United States, and the Canadian occurrences help to link these two areas of Symbos range. Symbos was adapted to warmer surroundings than Ovibos—perhaps a steppe or parkland environment.

This is the first of several Lithoprobe paleomagnetic studies underway to examine geotectonic motions in the northern Canadian Cordillera. Except for one controversial study, estimates for terranes underlying the Intermontane Belt in the Yukon have been extrapolated from studies in Alaska, southern British Columbia, and the northwestern United States. The Whitehorse Pluton is a large unmetamorphosed and undeformed tonalitic body of mid-Cretaceous age (~112 Ma) that was intruded into sedimentary units of the Whitehorse Trough in the Stikinia terrane. Geothermobarometric estimates for eight sites around the pluton indicate that postmagnetization tilting has been negligible since cooling through the hornblende-crystallization temperature and that the pluton is a high-level intrusion. Paleomagnetic measurements for 22 of 24 sites in the pluton yield a well-defined characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) direction that is steeply down and northwards. The ChRM direction gives a paleopole of 285.5°E, 81.7°N (dp = 53°, dm = 5.7°). When compared with the 112 Ma reference pole for the North American craton, this paleopole suggests that the northern Stikinia terrane has been translated northwards by 11.0 ± 4.8° (1220 ± 530 km) and rotated clockwise by 59 ± 17°. Except for an estimate from the ~70 Ma Carmacks Group volcanics, this translation and rotation estimate agrees well with previous estimates for units in the central and southern Intermontane Belt. They suggest that the terranes of the Intermontane Belt have behaved as a fairly coherent unit since the Early Cretaceous, moving northward at a minimum average rate of 2.3 ± 0.4 cm/a between ~140 and ~45 Ma.

Leucanthemum vulgare Lam. (Asteraceae), known as ox-eye daisy, is a familiar perennial herb with white ray florets and yellow disc florets. It commonly inhabits roadside ver ges, pastures and old fields from Newfoundland to British Columbia, and also as far north as the Yukon Territory. Introduced from Europe, L. vulgare was well established in North America by 1800. The Canadian distribution of L. vulgare has expanded in many areas recently, particularly in western Canada. It can form dense populations that may reduce diversity of natural vegetation or pasture quality, and also serves as a host and reservoir for several species of polyphagous gall-forming Meloidogyne nematodes that feed on crops. It is considered a noxious weed under provincial legislation in Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia, as well as under the Canada Seeds Act. Control efforts are sometimes complicated by difficulties in distinguishing ox-eye daisy from some forms of the commercially available Shasta daisy ( L. × superbum).

Nomenclatural issues pertaining to selected non-marine gastropods of Cretaceous and Tertiary age are discussed and resolved as follows. [1] Viviparus hammeri (Defrance, 1825) is reinstated; Helicites viviparoides Schlotheim, 1820 is a nomen nudum, made available as Paludina viviparoides Bronn, 1848, a new objective synonym. [2] Viviparus frauenfeldi Le Renard, 1994 is a new objective synonym of Viviparus oulchyensis Wenz, 1919. [3] Lorus is proposed as a nomen novum for Liris Conrad, 1871 [nec Fabricius, 1804]. [3] Wesselinghia is proposed as a nomen novum for Longosoma Wesselingh & Kadolsky, 2006 [nec Hartman, 1944]. [12] Scalaxis columnella (Deshayes, 1863) is reinstated, with Scalaxis sinister Wenz, 1923 as its new synonym.
