A Pleistocene muskox (Symbos) from Dease Lake, British Columbia

A Symbos skull fragment from Pleistocene deposits of northern British Columbia constitutes the first record of that genus for the province. In Canada, remains of this large muskox have been collected previously in western Yukon and southeastern Saskatchewan. Most of the other known specimens have been found in Alaska and the central United States, and the Canadian occurrences help to link these two areas of Symbos range. Symbos was adapted to warmer surroundings than Ovibos—perhaps a steppe or parkland environment.

Isolated skeletal elements of the amphibian genus Seymouria were recently discovered at the Richards Spur locality near Fort Sill, Oklahoma, a prolific source of Early Permian tetrapod remains. Five of the seven described bones are of juvenile size and include three neural arches, a humerus, and a femur, whereas the other two are partial vertebrae, apparently adult. All seven are morphologically similar to equivalent skeletal elements in Seymouria specimens previously collected in Europe and North America, apart from features reflecting the early developmental stage of the juvenile bones. The femur and humerus are clearly distinct from those of other seymouriamorphs such as Ariekanerpeton and Kotlassia. The rarity of Seymouria at the Richards Spur locality implies that it was not a regular component of the fauna, and it is also associated with the less markedly terrestrial assemblage that consistently occurs at localities in the southwestern United States. However, its skeletal morphology and occurrence at terrestrial localities such as Richards Spur imply a primarily terrestrial, rather than an amphibious, mode of life. Conflicting biostratigraphic correlations imply that the exact age of the Richards Spur deposits is uncertain, and equivalence to the Arroyo Formation of Texas may be erroneous.

AbstractThe cave-living and monobasic fungus gnat genusSpeoleptaEdwards is reviewed with a description of the first Nearctic species,Speolepta vockerothisp. nov., from Canada (caves in Ontario and British Columbia) and the United States (Alaska). Its morphology, life history, and biology are documented and compared with the single European speciesSpeolepta leptogaster(Winnertz). A further new species,Speolepta orientalissp.nov., is described based on a single male from northern Vietnam, representing the first record of this genus from the Oriental Region.

AbstractA review of the Nearctic genera and Canadian and Alaskan species of the Ocalea group is presented. Ten genera are treated, with five erected as new: Alfocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: A. montana Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Betocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: B. pacifica Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Gennadota Casey (reinstated), Longipeltina Bernhauer, Megocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: M. lemieuxi Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Metocalea Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: M. lindgreni Klimaszewski sp. nov.), Neoisoglossa (Casey) (nomen novum), Neothetalia Klimaszewski gen. nov. (type species: N. nimia (Casey)), Ocalea Erichson (restricted definition), and Parocalea Bernhauer. Twenty-four species of the Ocalea group are here recognized in the Nearctic region, fourteen of which occur in Canada. Six new species are described from western Canada and Alaska: Neothetalia smetanai Klimaszewski sp. nov. (Canada: British Columbia), Neothetalia canadiana Klimaszewski sp. nov. (Canada: British Columbia, Yukon Territory; United States: Alaska), Betocalea pacifica (Canada: British Columbia), Alfocalea montana (Canada: Alberta, British Columbia), Metocalea lindgreni (Canada: British Columbia), and Megocalea lemieuxi (Canada: British Columbia). The first record of Neoisoglossa agnita (Casey) in Alberta is provided. Two nominal species, Atheta (Athetalia) bicarniceps Casey (= Neoisoglossa) and Isoglossa grandicollis (Casey) (= Neoisoglossa), are here synonymized with Neoisoglossa arcuata (Casey). Aleochara pallitarsis Kirby has been transferred to the genus Neothetalia and is newly recorded from Alaska and British Columbia. Ocalea columbiana Klimaszewski has been transferred to Neothetalia and is newly recorded from Alaska. Neothetalia pallitarsis was formerly recorded from an unknown locality in North America and Neothetalia columbiana from the Carmanah Valley on Vancouver Island. Neothetalia nimia is newly recorded from Alaska. A new generic classification is proposed to accommodate species of the Nearctic Ocalea group. New data are provided on the systematics, relationships, bionomics, and distribution of the Nearctic species and genera of America north of Mexico. Diagnoses, colour images of entire bodies, and line illustrations of genital features are provided for those Canadian and Alaskan species that were not formerly illustrated, and their collection localities are plotted on maps. A key to Nearctic genera of the Ocalea group and the species occurring in Canada and Alaska is presented. The lectotypes have been designated for the following nominal species because the original series consisted of syntypes or represented mixed species or both sexes but with males bearing a better diagnostic set of characters: Aleochara picata Stephens (= Ocalea), Atheta (Athetalia) bicarniceps, Atheta (Athetalia) nimia Casey (= Neothetalia), Atheta (Athetalia) repensa Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Isoglossa arcuata Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea agnita Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea franciscana Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea fusca Fenyes (= Neoisoglossa), Ocalea grandicollis Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Pyroglossa grossa Bernhauer, Rheobioma disjuncta Casey (= Neoisoglossa), Rheobioma marcida Casey (= Neoisoglossa), and Rheobioma terrena Casey (= Neoisoglossa).

The spread of Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) in North America has been extensively documented (Rawson 1931; Clench 1956; Pengelly 1961; Arthur 1966; Burns 1966; McNeil et al. 1975; McNeil and Duchesne 1977). In Canada, T. lineola has been recorded from British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and now Manitoba (Gregory 1975; Jackson 1978). In the north central United States T. lineola has been recorded from St. Louis Co. and International Falls, Minnesota (Brewer 1977; Lundeen 1980). Pengelly (pers. comm.) observed T. lineola at Dryden, Ontario in 1972. McCabe and Post (1977) did not include this species in their list for North Dakota. The purpose of the present note is to report on the presence and collections of T. lineola in Manitoba and in northwestern Ontario.

Recently, roses (Rosa spp.) that require relatively little maintenance have gained in popularity in the United States. One group of these roses is the Griffith Buck roses, which were selected to survive the extremely cold winters of the north-central United States. Many of these roses were rated qualitatively as having disease resistance when they were released, but their resistance levels to black spot (Marssonina rosae) have not been quantified, compared with each other, or rated against other resistant or susceptible roses. In a field trial in Iowa in 2005 and 2006, 24 Griffith Buck roses that were originally described as disease resistant were compared with susceptible and resistant control cultivars for susceptibility to black spot. No fungicides were applied in either year. Plants were rated five times each year for black spot incidence, and also to assess overall plant appearance. Griffith Buck roses ‘Carefree Beauty’, ‘Aunt Honey’, ‘Honeysweet’, ‘Earthsong’, and ‘Pearlie Mae’ had significantly less black spot than many of the other cultivars. In addition, these cultivars also remained attractive and could be used in low-maintenance landscapes in the north-central United States, even under moderate black spot pressure.

A recent study of that complex of the genus Diarsia which at present is found in collections under the name rosaria Grt. has convinced me that at least two species, easily separable on the basis of maculation and colouring, have gone under this name. One of these, the true rosaria, is confined to the more northerly portions of the California coast. The other species ranges from Alaska south through British Columbia into the Pacific Northwest of the United States, and from the coast of British Columbia east through the northern coniferous forest zone to the coast of Labrador. The latter species is divisible on the basis of well defined genitalic differences into a subspecies inhabiting the Cordilleran region and a subspecies confined to the northern coniferous forest.

Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis siculus) is known from scattered locations in the United States, including Orcas Island, Washington, where a population went unreported for about a decade, but was confirmed in 2017. On 19 June 2019, a single adult female P. siculus was caught in an industrial area along the northern arm of the Fraser River in Vancouver, British Columbia; this represents the first record of this species on the loose in Canada. No other P. siculus were sighted in the Vancouver area. We assume this Canadian P. siculus was a lone stow-away and had not deposited eggs. We could not determine how it entered the province.

The milliped genus Auturus consists of the valid species evides (Bollman), mcclurkini Causey, louisianus (Chamberlin), and erythropygos (Brandt), the last two of which are divided into two subspecies each. The other four nominal species are relegated to appropriate synonymies. Auturus evides, louisianus, and mcclurkini occur in the central United States, along the Mississippi River from central Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Auturus erythropygos is widely allopatric and occurs in the southeastern United States from northern North Carolina to northern Florida. The four species are anatomically similar, and all occur exclusively in association with moist, decaying hardwood logs or stumps. They can be distinguished only by details of the male gonopods, particularly the orientation of the terminal calyx and the position of the solenomerite within the calyx. Auturus evides, louisianus, and erythropygos are phenotypically similar and appear to be closely related; mcclurkini, however, possesses a number of unique characters and represents a separate line of descent. The genus Illiniums, recently synonymized with Auturus, is revived on the basis of published illustrations of its type species, I. beattyi Shear.

Abstract The Haines index is used in wildfire forecasting and monitoring to evaluate the potential contributions of atmospheric stability and humidity to the behavior of plume-dominated wildfires. The index has three variants (“low,” “mid,” and “high”) that accommodate differences in surface elevation. As originally formulated, the low variant is calculated from temperature observations at the 950- and 850-hPa levels and humidity observations at 850 hPa. In the early 1990s the National Weather Service implemented a new mandatory level for radiosonde observations at 925 hPa. Following this change, measurements at 950 hPa became less frequent. An informal survey of several forecast offices found no formalized adjustment to the calculation of the low Haines index to take into account the nonavailability of 950-hPa measurements. Some sources continue to use 950-hPa temperature, usually interpolated from 925-hPa and surface temperatures, to calculate the low Haines index. Others directly substitute the 925-hPa temperature for the originally specified 950-hPa value. This study employs soundings from the central United States when both 950- and 925-hPa levels were available to investigate the impact of different calculation approaches on the resulting values of the low variant of the Haines index. Results show that direct substitution of 925-hPa temperature for the 950-hPa temperature can dramatically underestimate the potential wildfire severity compared with the original formulation of the Haines index. On the other hand, a low-elevation variant of the Haines index calculated from the interpolated 950-hPa temperature is usually in close agreement with the original formulation of the index.

The number of English Language Learners (ELL) is increasing in all regions of the United States. Although the majority (71%) speak Spanish as their first language, the other 29% may speak one of as many as 100 or more different languages. In spite of an increasing number of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who can provide bilingual services, the likelihood of a match between a given student's primary language and an SLP's is rather minimal. The second best option is to work with a trained language interpreter in the student's language. However, very frequently, this interpreter may be bilingual but not trained to do the job.
