The native balsam fir sawfly, Neodiprion abietis (Harris) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), occurs throughout Canada, Alaska, and the northern United States of America (Rose et al. 1994; Drooz 1985). This sawfly was originally described as Lophyrus abietis (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) (Harris 1841), then transferred to the genus Diprion (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) (MacGillivray 1916). Rohwer (1918) established the genus Neodiprion for Nearctic species of the genera Lophyrus and Diprion. Based on differences in size, color, and female genitalic characters between adults reared from the genera Abies, Picea, Pseudotsuga, and Tsuga (Pinaceae), Ross (1955) considered N. abietis as a complex. After a thorough morphological and physiological study, Knerer and Atwood (1972) concluded that there were five strains of N. abietis in North America: one western and four eastern.

Pentecostalism as a new wave of Christianity became more pronounced in 1970's and beyond in Nigeria. Since then scholars of Religion, History, Sociology and Political Science have shown keen interest in the study of the Churches known as Pentecostals because of the impact they have made on the society. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was established by Pastor Josiah Akindayomi in Lagos,Nigeria in 1952. After his demise, he was succeeded by Pastor Adeboye Adejare Enock. The problem of study of this research was an examination of the expansion of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to North America, Caribbean and Canada. The missionary activities of the church could be regarded as a reversed mission in the propagation of Christianity by Africans in the Diaspora. The methodology adopted was historical. The primary and secondary sources of information were also germane in the research. The findings of the research indicated that the Redeemed Christian Church of God was founded in North America by Immigrants from Nigeria. Pastor Adeboye Enock Adejare had much influence on the Church within and outside the country because of his charisma. The Church has become a place of refuge for many immigrants. They are also contributing to the economy of the United States of America. However, the members of the Church were faced with some challenges, such as security scrutiny by the security agencies. In conclusion, the RCCGNA was a denomination that had been accepted and embraced by Nigerians and African immigrants in the United States of America.

This contribution presents the analysis of the position of the Portuguese language within two Portuguese communities located in North America: in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States of America. Enrollments are decreasing within the communitarian schools of the two communities, and some actors within these institutions are mobilizing discourses about the power of Portuguese as a global language of the future, a language of business. Thanks to our ethnographic approach, we observed discourses promoted by these institutions not anymore as a Heritage Language (HL), but ‘selling’ Portuguese as a new language for the future. Moreover, we realized how the nationalist paradigm in which one language is equal to one nation or community, and this refers to one norm, is maintained to support this new position. Due to a qualitative methodology, mixing interactional observation and semi-structured interviews, we aimed to articulate discursive analysis and analysis of language practices, mainly focusing on the perception and the identification of what is perceived as the ‘good’ Portuguese. Speakers continue to interrogate mixed or hybrid practices according to their repertoires and considering each context or situation. This may help questioning the complex ideology of ‘purity’ of a language.

AbstractGyrinus cavatus sp.nov. (type locality: Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada), from across Canada, is compared with G. minutus Fabricius. The two species are broadly sympatric in the northern boreal and transition forests, but G. cavatus is more abundant southward into the northern United States. Therefore, the subgenus Gyrinulus Zaitsev is not monobasic, but has three species in North America, including G. rockinghamensis LeConte.

Databases of accumulated paleoecological and archaeological records provide a means for large-scale syntheses of environmental and cultural histories. We describe the current status of the Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database (CARD), a searchable collection of more than 36,000 14C dates from archaeological and paleontological sites from across North America. CARD, built by the late Dr Richard Morlan of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, consists of uncalibrated 14C data as well as information about the material dated, the cultural association of the date (e.g. Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland), and its geographic location. The database can be used to study questions relating to prehistoric demography, migrations, human vulnerability to environmental change, and human impact on the landscape, but biases relating to sampling intensity and taphonomy must first be accounted for. Currently, Canada and the northern United States are well represented in the database, while the southern United States is underrepresented. The frequency of 14C dates associated with archaeological sites increases through time from 15,000 cal yr BP until European contact, which likely reflects, among other factors, both the destruction of older cultural carbon due to erosion and dissolution and increasing population numbers through time. An exploratory analysis of the dates reveals their distribution in both time and space, and suggests that the database is sufficiently complete to enable quantitative analysis of general demographic trends.

AbstractHistorians like Oscar Handlin and Timothy L. Smith asserted that international migration, especially that of Europeans to North America, was a process which reinforced traditional religious loyalties. In harmony with this supposed verity, a venerable postulate in the tradition of Scandinavian-American scholarship was that most Norwegian immigrants in the New World (the overwhelming majority of whom had been at least nominal members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Norway) clung to their birthright religious legacy and affiliated with Lutheran churches after crossing the Atlantic (although for many decades it has been acknowledged that by contrast, vast numbers of their Swedish-American and Danish-American counterparts did not join analogous ethnic Lutheran churches). In the present article, however, it is demonstrated that anticlericalism and alienation from organised religious life were widespread in nineteenth-century Norway, where nonconformist Christian denominations were also proliferating. Furthermore, in accordance with these historical trends, the majority of Norwegian immigrants in the United States of America and Southern Africa did not affiliate with Lutheran churches. Significant minorities joined Baptist, Methodist, and other non-Lutheran religious fellowships, but the majority did not become formally affiliated with either Norwegian or pan-Scandinavian churches.

Resumen: El objetivo fundamental de este trabajo es aproximarse a la significación histórica de la prensa inmigrante portuguesa en los Estados Unidos de América, prestando especial atención a aquellos elementos de carácter narrativo que han contribuído a crear un discurso simbólico y a dar un sentido trascendente y etnocéntrico a la presencia portuguesa en Norteamérica. Mediante una aproximación cuantitativa y cualitativa que emplea técnicas de análisis del discurso, el artículo intenta ofrecer una radiografía general sobre los aspectos más paradigmáticos de la narrrativa periodística de este tipo de prensa relacionados con el imaginario cultural lusófono en Estados Unidos.Abstract: The main objective of this work is to approach the historical significance of the Portuguese immigrant press in the United States of America, paying special attention to those elements of a narrative nature that have contributed to create a symbolic discourse and to give a transcendental and ethnocentric meaning to the Portuguese presence in North America. Through a quantitative and qualitative approach that uses techniques of discourse analysis, the article intends to offer a general radiography on the most paradigmatic aspects of the journalistic narrative of this type of press related to the Portuguese-American cultural imaginary in the United States.
