AbstractLarvae of Hyphantria cunea Drury were reared on early, mid-season, and late foliage collected from the same apple trees. Survival was significantly lower on late foliage and the fecundity of the moths decreased from 604 in the early series to 128 in the late. Half the filial generation was reared under nutritional stress on a deficient synthetic diet and the other half on a very favorable host, speckled alder. Under both conditions there was a strong transmitted influence of parental food quality on the viability of the eggs and on the ability of first-instar larvae to become established on food. The progeny of the late series did not survive beyond this instar. When the filial generation was subjected to nutritional stress, the influence of parental food was apparent throughout the larval, pupal and adult stages, with progeny of the early series having higher survival than those of the mid-season series. However, when the filial generation hail very favorable food, there was no significant difference in survival rates subsequent to the larval establishment period. The quality of foliage available to univoltine populations of H. cunea depends largely on temperature. Thus, in the development of population models for this species, temperature should be treated as a variable having not only direct effects on establishment and survival each season, but also indirect effects on the quality of the progeny in the following season.

102 Background: In treating esophageal cancer chemo-radiation is used in the definitive as well as neo-adjuvant setting. Optimal dosage of radiation for best outcome has been debated. The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of lower radiation dosage compared to higher. Methods: Online search for studies comparing radiation dose from 1990 to present was performed. Primary outcome was overall-survival rates for up to 5 years. Secondary outcomes included post-treatment complications and treatment response. A cut point of 51 Gy and less was considered as lower dose and greater than 51 Gy was considered higher dose. Quality of included studies was evaluated by STROBE criteria. Relative Risk (RR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were calculated from pooled data. Results: The search strategy yielded 142 studies, 12 met our selection criteria and included 1876 patients receiving radiation for resectable esophageal carcinoma. Of these patients, 1057 received lower and 819 were treated with greater than 51 Gy. Median age was 63 and 64 years for lower and higher radiation dose respectively. Meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference in survival and toxicities between the two groups. 1 year overall survival (RR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.84-1.13, p = 0.69), 2 year overall survival (RR = 1.29, 95% CI 0.76-2.19, p = 0.34), 3 year overall survival (RR = 1.18, 95% CI 0.83-1.68, p = 0.37), 4 year overall survival (RR = 1.37, 95% CI 0.64-2.94, p = 0.41), 5 year overall survival (RR = 1.11, 95% CI 0.72-1.69, p = 0.64), Esophagitis (RR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.39-1.50, p = 0.43), Dermatitis (RR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.12-7.94, p = 0.99), Fistula formation (RR = 0.72, 95% CI 0.32-1.60, p = 0.42), Hematologic complications (RR = 1.10, 95% CI 0.20-6.02, p = 0.91), Stricture formation (RR = 1.39, 95% CI 0.54-3.58, p = 0.5). Conclusions: Lower radiation dose appears to be as effective as higher dose in esophageal carcinoma with similar toxicity profile and survival rates. Larger prospective randomized trials, focusing on patient-reported quality-of-life are required to consolidate these results.

323 Background: Transarterial Radio-embolization (TARE) has emerged as a newer regional technique to Transarterial Chemo-embolization (TACE) for treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of both techniques. Methods: Online search for studies comparing TARE to TACE from 2005 to present was performed. Primary outcome was overall survival rate for up to 4 years. Secondary outcomes included post-treatment complications and treatment response. Quality of included studies was evaluated by STROBE criteria. Relative Risk (RR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were calculated from pooled data. Results: The search strategy yielded 172 studies, 5 met our selection criteria and included 653 patients undergoing embolization for unresectable HCC. Of these patients, 284 underwent TACE and 269 underwent TARE. Median age was 63 and 64 years for TACE and TARE, respectively. Meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference in survival for up to 4 years between the two groups (HR = 1.06; 95% CI: 0.81-1.46, p = 0.567). TACE required at least one day of hospital stay compared to TARE which was mostly an outpatient procedure. TACE had more post-treatment pain than TARE (RR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.40-2.75, p < 0.01), but less subjective fatigue (RR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.48-0.80, p < 0.01). There was no difference between the two groups in the incidence of post-treatment nausea, vomiting, fever or other complications. In addition, there was no difference in partial or complete response rates between the two groups. Conclusions: TARE appears to be a safe alternative treatment to TACE with similar complication profile and survival rates. Larger prospective randomized trials, focusing on patient-reported quality-of-life are required to consolidate these results, and to evaluate cost vs benefit for both techniques.

In practice, air-conditioner service companies often wish to compare the maintenance quality of two groups of equipment. One of the feasible methods is to compare the survival rates at some specified survival times. However, differences in survival rate between two groups of equipment can change significantly depending on the chosen time. To overcome this problem, this study tried to find out a statistical test method for determining whether there is a statistically significant difference between the survival functions or hazard functions of two groups of water chillers. This study collected two sets of data on the maintenance of water chillers in the stations of the Red Line and the Green Line, Taipei Metro, Taiwan. Then, survival analysis was performed to estimate the survival rates for the two groups of water chillers and identify the probability model of the interarrival time of equipment failure. This study used the Kaplan-Meier method to produce the survival curves for water chillers and thereby comprehend the cycle of maintenance and repairs. Finally, the differences in survival rate between the two groups of water chillers were examined and used to infer the difference in maintenance quality. Research results show that the survival time data of water chillers satisfy the proportional hazard model. The log-rank test can be used to verify the difference in maintenance quality between two groups of water chillers.

SummaryTwenty patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were followed up to 5 years after transarterial radiotherapy with 90Y-resin particles. Diagnostic radioembolizations of 99mTc-macroaggregates facilitated scintigraphic assessment of activity distribution, dose evaluation and final procedural verification. The overall survival rates were 56, 38 and 14% (after 1, 2 and 3 years, resp.). Patients with unifocal HCC and a single feeding artery (n = 7) even presented 83, 67 and 40% (2 alive after 2.75 and 4 years). With multiple arteries (n = 7), the longest survival was 26 months. Patients with multifocal HCC survived up to 33 months after selective radioembolization. Quality of life was improved in all. Survival was positively correlated with absorbed dose but residual/recurrent tumour occurred even after ≥300 Gy. Post-treatment symptoms were minimal (35 applications), pulmonary shunt rates were correctly predicted and pulmonary complications avoided.

SummaryAim: Assessment of the clinical benefit of i.v. contrast enhanced diagnostic CT (CE-CT) compared to low dose CT with 20 mAs (LD-CT) without contrast medium in combined [18F]-FDG PET/CT examinations in restaging of patients with lymphoma. Patients, methods: 45 patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 35) and Hodgkin's disease (n = 10) were included into this study. PET, LD-CT and CECT were analyzed separately as well as side-by-side. Lymphoma involvement was evaluated separately for seven regions. Indeterminate diagnoses were accepted whenever there was a discrepancy between PET and CT findings. Results for combined reading were calculated by rating indeterminate diagnoses according the suggestions of either CT or PET. Each patient had a clinical follow-up evaluation for >6 months. Results: Region-based evaluation suggested a sensitivity/specificity of 66/93% for LD-CT, 87%/91% for CE-CT, 95%/96% for PET, 94%/99% for PET/LD-CT and 96%/99% for PET/CE-CT. The data for PET/CT were obtained by rating indeterminate results according to the suggestions of PET, which turned out to be superior to CT. Lymphoma staging was changed in two patients using PET/ CE-CT as compared to PET/LD-CT. Conclusion: Overall, there was no significant difference between PET/LD-CT and PET/CE-CT. However, PET/CE-CT yielded a more precise lesion delineation than PET/LD-CT. This was due to the improved image quality of CE-CT and might lead to a more accurate investigation of lymphoma.

This article presents the results of studying the impact of housing and feeding conditions on broiler chickens of Hubbard RedBro cross, as well as the quality of products obtained when using floor and cage content, in a farm. It established that when receiving a mixed feed of own production using feed raw materials grown on a farm without the use of pesticides, a statistically significant decrease in potentially dangerous substances for animal health is recorded. Compared with factory feed, it has reduced the content of pesticides by 14 times, and mercury and arsenic by 24 times, cadmium by five times, and lead by ten times. The results of the study of economic indicators of growing Hubbard RedBro cross broiler chickens, as well as the chemical composition and quality of carcasses, indicated that there was no significant difference between the floor and cell conditions of keeping. Still, the use of a diet based on eco-feeds contributed to a statistically significant decrease in the concentration of toxic metals in the muscles of the poultry of the experimental groups. As a result, it found that the use of the studied compound feed in the diets of broiler chickens increased the indicators of Biosafety and ensured the production of environmentally safe ("organic") poultry meat products.
