AbstractOnly one species of Anoetidae was previously recorded associated with North American Scolytidae. Five new species of Anoetus and one new species of Bonomoia associated with North American bark beetles are described. Two nomen novum (due to homonymy) in the genus Anoetus are proposed. Anoetus varia is distinguished from A. gordius, a European species restricted to Ips laricis. Anoetus varia is recorded from 17 scolytids infesting 10 conifer species from 14 states and provinces. An annotated list, with new nomenclatorial combinations in many cases, of the 13 anoetids recorded associated with scolytids in the old world is given. Histiostoma is synonymized under Anoetus.

Ten species of the genus Crepidotus are described from Hawaii. They are Crepidotus alabamensis, C. amygdalosporus, C. appalachianensis, C. applanatus var. globigera, C. avellaneus, C. citrinus, C. mollis, C. nephrodes, and C. rhizomorphus. One new species, C. bakerae, is proposed. Keys and distinctive characters of each species are provided. It is suggested that most of the species came from the North American continent.

The results are given of a survey of the cestode fauna of several thousand fishes representing thirty species common in the Hudson bay drainage system, particularly in the Hudson bay and in the larger lakes of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The survey yielded twelve species of adult and seven species of larval cestodes, ten of which were identical with European species, while seven were purely North American. The incidence of infection was high and the individual intensity was heavy. The highest incidence and heaviest intensity occurred among nektonic types such as Hiodon, Leucichthys, Esox, Lucioperca and Salvelinus. Benthonic forms such as Catostomus, Ameiurus, Lota, Acipenser and Coregonus, were found relatively free from infection.The North American species of Cyathocephalus and Diplocotyle are regarded as identical with the European species C. truncatus and D. Olrikii; the species C. americanus Cooper, and Bothrimonus intermedius Cooper are rejected. The triaenophorid common in the area is regarded as Triaenophorus tricuspidatus (Bloch), and two morphae are recognized, microdentatus and megadentatus, the latter equivalent to T. robustus (Olsson). Bothriocephalus cuspidatus Cooper is regarded as comprising three sub-species, cuspidatus, hiodontos and luciopercae. The eubothriid cestode in Lota lota maculosa is regarded as identical with the European E. rugosum, but comprising two morphae, conformatus and deformatus. Two new species of Proteocephalus are described, namely coregoni from Coregonus atikameg, and luciopercae from Lucioperca vitreum.

AbstractThe Caloplaca crenulatella species complex is monophyletic, based on analysis of ITS nrDNA sequences. It is characterized mainly by its ascospores and a simplified thallus. Caloplaca aquensis, C. borysthenica, C. interfulgens, C. lactea, C. marmorata and C. tominii represent well-defined monophyletic lineages within it. Caloplaca diffusa, described here as a new species, is a well-supported lineage with a distinctive phenotype. Caloplaca crenulatella s. lat. and C. ferrarii s. lat. are heterogeneous taxa appearing in four and two places respectively within our tree. Caloplaca ochracea also belongs to the group, although it has different ascospore characters. Caloplaca gyalolechiaeformis and C. pseudocitrina are later synonyms of C. tominii. Arctic and North American sorediate specimens morphologically very close to C. tominii represent a separate lineage recently recognized as C. erichansenii. The North American Caloplaca nashii has a C. crenulatella-like phenotype but does not belong to the C. crenulatella complex. The identities of Caloplaca lacteoides and Caloplaca epigaea are not clear, but the latter may be a terricolous ecotype of one of the entities within C. crenulatella s. lat. A key to the European species of the group is provided.

Checking some North American genera of bark-beetles I found a series of Alniphagus Sw. which does not agree with the common species Alniphagus aspericollis from California and British Columbia and doubtless represents a new species. The genus therefore comprises now three distinct species, Alniphagus alni Nijs. from Japan and the Far East, A. aspericollis from British Columbia down to California and the new species A. hirsutus from Alnus sitchensis in B.C.

AbstractCollections from the Barr Group (late Llanvirn to early Caradoc) of the Girvan district are described and occurrences of all trilobites from both the Barr and Albany groups are listed and their frequencies recorded. The close relationships with North American faunas are emphasised, and three Girvan and North American species are considered synonymous. One new species is described, Bevanopsis phyllisae. Pandaspinapyga is considered a junior subjective synonym of Acanthoparypha. The possibility that Alwynulus may be an aberrant staurocephalid is discussed.Growth stages of several genera are illustrated; some show unexpectedly large differences in size and morphology in comparison with North American silicified species at the same general stage of development.

The new genus Aethodelphax gen. nov. is described to include one new species, Aethodelphax prairianus sp. nov. and 7 species transferred from Delphacodes: Aethodelphax aetocephalus (Beamer, 1948), comb. nov., A. alatus (Beamer, 1948), comb. nov., A. caninus (Beamer, 1947), comb. nov., A. concavus (Beamer, 1948), comb. nov., A. megadontus (Beamer, 1951), comb. nov., A. paraparvulus (Beamer, 1948), comb. nov., and A. sagittatus (Beamer, 1947), comb. nov. A diagnosis for all species, illustrations and an identification key is provided. All species are found in the midwestern and southeastern states of the U.S., except A. caninus which is recorded from Arizona and New Mexico, and are all associated with native grasslands.

Pseudoomphalina kalchbrenneri is a Eurasian species. In North America the Pso. kalchbrenneri complex is represented by Pseudoomphalina anticostica sp. nov. and Pso. compressipes in the east and Pso. intermedia in the west. Pseudoomphalina farinacea and Pso. felleoides are later synonyms for Pso. compressipes. The somewhat similar Pseudolaccaria pachyphylla occupies a temperate band through Eurasia, confirmed by sequencing in both eastern and western North America. It differs from species of the Pso. kalchbrenneri complex by smaller size, finely granular pileus, non-decurrent gills, and lack of hymenial cystidia. All species of the Pso. kalchbrenneri complex are uncommon, and macroscopically similar. Pseudoomphalina kalchbrenneri and Pso. intermedia can be identified by their distribution (Europe and western North America, respectively) and lack of cystidia. The cystidiate eastern North American Pso. anticostica and Pso. compressipes can be differentiated by the smaller spores of the latter. Pseudoomphalina cokeri is the most ancestral species on the Pseudoomphalina lineage, while Clitocybe thujana and Agaricus apertus (Clitocybe/Clitocybula aperta) fall outside Pseudoomphalina and Pseudolaccaria. We add 21 new sequences to GenBank, including six types (Agaricus compressipes, Clitocybe felleoides, C. farinacea, C. intermedia, C. thujana, Agaricus apertus), and one new species (Pso. anticostica).

The Old World leafhopper genus Changwhania Kwon is reviewed and three of its four species are illustrated and male genital characters are provided. One new species from China, Changwhania digitata Zhang and Duan, is described. A key to species is also provided.

AbstractThe European species of Sphegina are reviewed, including a new key, complete synonymies, diagnoses, distributional and biological data for all species. The nomenclatural history of the European species is reviewed and reveated that modern workers revise their predecessors' species concepts but rarely do the same for their predecessors' nomenclature. One new species is described (atrolutea Lucas from Spain); five new synonymies are proposed (kimakowiczi Strobl, 1897 = elegans Schummel, 1843; eoa Stackelberg, 1953 and fuliginosa Goeldlin, 1974 = montana Becker, 1921; and loewii Zeller, 1843, rubripes Becker, 1921 = spheginea Zetterstedt, 1838); and eight lectotypes are designated (for eoa Stackelberg, germanica Becker, kimakowiczi Strobl, nigra Meigen, sibirica Stackelberg, rufiventris Strobl, and verecunda Collin).
