Checking some North American genera of bark-beetles I found a series of Alniphagus Sw. which does not agree with the common species Alniphagus aspericollis from California and British Columbia and doubtless represents a new species. The genus therefore comprises now three distinct species, Alniphagus alni Nijs. from Japan and the Far East, A. aspericollis from British Columbia down to California and the new species A. hirsutus from Alnus sitchensis in B.C.

From a study of living materials and specimens in several regional herbaria, a list has been drawn up of all the common and several of the rarer tube-dwelling diatoms of eastern Canada. Descriptions, illustrations of living material and acid-cleaned valves, and a key to the species are provided. Most specimens were from the Atlantic Provinces and the St. Lawrence estuary, but a few were from the Northwest Territories. By far the most common species is Berkeleya rutilans. Other species occurring commonly in the Quoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy, and sporadically in space and time elsewhere, arc Navicula delognei (two forms), Nav. pseudocomoides, Nav. smithii, Haslea crucigera, and a new species, Nav.rusticensis. Navicula ramosissima and Nav. mollis in eastern Canada are usually found as scattered cohabitants in tubes of other species. Nitzschia tubicola and Nz. fontifuga also occur sporadically as cohabitants.

A new species, Pholis clemensi, referred to the family Pholidae, is named and described from 12 specimens taken in southern British Columbia waters and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Pholis clemensi is compared with other members of the genus, and a key is given to the North American species.

Gamasiphis angaridis sp. n. is described from females and males collected from litter and soil in the North Asian part of Russia–Siberia and the Far East. This is the first species of the large genus Gamasiphis to be described from the northern Palaearctic Region. A key for the separation of females of the 11 recognisable species of Gamasiphis described inEurasia is provided.

Mr. Ashmead has written thus of the Xyelidæ: “ the imagoes appear very early in the year, or in February, March and April, Deposit their eggs and then disappear, the consequence being that very few are taken, and only a few of the common forms are known.” Of the genus Xyela, as now restricted only one North American species, X. minor, Norton, has been described.On May 1st of the present year, as we were going up to our classes in the Normal University at Las Vegas, N.M., my wife picked a small insect off my coat. It was at once transfered to the bottle which is never absent from the entomologist's person, and upon inspection later, proved to be a new species of Xyela, herewith described:

The 60th Union Helminthological Expedition (Skrjabin, Podjapolskaja and Schulz, 1929) to the Far East examined many squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris mantshuricus Thom. 1909), and among other helminths found a new species belonging to the genus Longistriata Schulz, 1926 (subfam. Heligmosominae Travassos, 1914). The same species had also been found by one of us (M. P. L.) in Ussuri squirrels at the Moscow Zoo.

Polycheria acercaudasp. nov., an amphipod symbiotic with sponges and ascidians in Korean waters, is established herein as a new species, along with a detailed description and illustrations. This new species is closely related to the following three known species of the genus from the Far East:Polycheria amakusaensisHirayama, 1984,P. japonicaBulycheva, 1952, andP. orientalisHirayama, 1984. However,Polycheria acercaudasp. nov. can be distinguished from the other congeners by the following combination of characteristics: (1) on antenna 2, the anterior margin of peduncular article 4 is pubescent; (2) on gnathopod 2, the palm is clearly distinct; (3) on uropod 3, the inner ramus is lined with plumose setae; and (4) on the telson, the apices are acute. This is the first report of the genusPolycheriaHaswell, 1879 belonging to the family Dexaminidae Leach, 1814 from Korean waters.
