Collaborative Business Service Modelling in Knowledge-Intensive Enterprises

Nowadays, knowledge-intensive enterprises, which offer knowledge-based products and services to the market, play a vital role in the knowledge-based economy. In the global networked age, collaborative business services have raised as one of the most important knowledge-intensive services that help enterprises to gain the competitive advantage. These services greatly depend on the ability to use network architectures to collaborate efficiently with business partners. This paper introduces the KB-CBSM (Knowledge-Based Collaborative Business Service Modelling) approach, which aims at providing a conceptual foundation for modelling effectively and improving incrementally collaborative business services in knowledge-intensives enterprises. The paper begins by presenting the necessity and principles of the KB-CBSM approach. Next, it presents the conceptual foundation that consists of three levels: Service value creation network, Service system and Service levels. The paper continues with a discussion and review of the relevant literature and ends with the conclusion and suggestions for further research.

In the context of globalization, the competitive advantage of each service enterprise depends greatly on the ability to use network architectures to collaborate efficiently in business services. The chapter aims at introducing an information-driven approach that provides a conceptual foundation for modelling effectively and improving incrementally collaborative business services. The chapter begins by presenting the necessity for and principles of the information-driven approach. Then it presents the business service foundation for the proposed approach that consists of three different dimensions: 1) service proposal, corresponding to the service value creation network level, 2) service creation, corresponding to the service system level, and 3) service operation, corresponding to the service level. The chapter continues with a discussion and review of the relevant literature, followed by the conclusion and suggestions for further research.

The decisive role of the knowledge-based economy, and the importance of the ventures fostering the use of innovation and incorporating knowledge, high technology and creativity are nowadays worldwide recognised, even more so considering that the EU is in a permanent search for innovation as a source of and for competitiveness. Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) are expected to play a key role in the knowledge-based economy as a source of innovation and knowledge in production, dynamic hubs in knowledge-related networks, or intermediaries of innovation between the manufacturing sector and suppliers, partners and final consumers. Within this context, in the present paper we aim to investigate the complex relation between the knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) and the imperative of fostering the economic activity, both of the entrepreneurial dynamics and their macroeconomic effects. The analysis, performed at EU level, leads to interesting results, revealing a complex but contradictory relation between KIBS and economic activity, which is measured by the following main indicators: entrepreneurial density and macroeconomic dynamics.

The paper introduces a conceptual framework, called the CBSM (Collaborative Business Service Modelling) framework, which provides an intellectual foundation for understanding thoroughly and modelling effectively collaborative business services. The paper begins by presenting the necessity for and principles of the conceptual framework. Then it presents the architecture of the CBSM framework that consists of three different levels: the service level for service operation, the service system level for service creation, and the service value creation network level for service proposal. The paper continues with a discussion and review of the relevant literature, followed by the conclusion and suggestions for further research.

This paper illustrates the importance of Knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) as a source of innovation and economic growth. In the article, we explain the impact of KIBS on innovation, the importance of KIBS as a support in economic growth, its positive impact on employment and important role in the knowledge-based economy of Slovakia. This paper shows KIBS as important for innovation processes provided by institutions, such as universities, where the most important part involves research and development. Low support in services such as KIBS may cause decreases in availability of highly qualified employees and output of knowledge for innovation. Productivity and economic growth are largely dependent on fast growing technological progress and transfer of knowledge. Innovation can lead to a reduction in manual workers on one hand, while on the other  qualified employees will be needed for processes in the new applied technology. In order to fully understand the rapid growth of innovation and KIBS, we analyzed the correlation and number of scientists of its population in the EU countries.

Singapore’s road to a knowledge-based economy. The role of knowledge-intensive business services in the national system of innovation. In 1998, Singapore’s government announced its vision to transform the city state into a knowledge-based economy (KBE) through a gradual shift from value adding to value creation. As both users and producers of knowledge, knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) are commonly seen as a cornerstone of the KBE. After assessing the development, size and structure of Singapore’s KIBS sector, we use data from innovation surveys of manufacturing and KIBS firms to assess the latter’s dual role as innovators and bridges for innovation. Our results allow us to point out policy recommendations and sketch possible avenues for further research.

Communication and information technologies have started to emerge since the 40s resulting major changes in the way business has been conducted and effected global economy. Transitions to knowledge-intensive business models become popular since late 1950s. Additionally intellectual capabilities become more important than physical inputs. Having sufficient national production and technology to create a welfare society similar to developed countries is crucial for any modern nation. One of the main developmental leverages for the globalization becomes the knowledge based economic approach. Developed by World Bank “Knowledge Assessment Methodology” is very important methodology in order to measure the progress of countries towards having a knowledge based economy. World Bank's four Knowledge Economy pillars: economic and institutional regime, education, innovation, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) developed for countries to make basic assessment of countries’ readiness for the knowledge economy and help them the transition to a Knowledge Economy. In this study, knowledge economy concept and its properties are presented. Furthermore this paper introduces the analysis of knowledge economy from Turkey’s perspective especially for the role of innovation and education pillars in the development of Turkey.

AbstractThis study aims to synthesize and organize existing the knowledge in the knowledge-based economy (KBE) research field. Using the Web of Science Core Collection, this study conducts a bibliometric literature review of 1228 articles published from 1991 to 2020. The results reveal the research evolution and identify some of the field’s most active and influential articles, journals, and authors. Moreover, this analysis enhances the understanding of the research field’s conceptual and intellectual structure based on a global overview of the relevant literature and its authors. The bibliometric analysis also reveals seven thematic clusters: (1) KBE fundamentals, (2) knowledge management, (3) knowledge work, (4) knowledge generation, (5) knowledge environments, (6) new post-capitalism, and (7) KBE reconceptualization. These clusters provide a holistic view of the field and, in so doing, facilitate future research by providing a research map as to guide the advancement of the existing knowledge on this topic. Based on the bibliometric and content analyses, some future research avenues have been proposed to provide clues for this task.

Knowledge Based Economy is the key to realize the Lisbon strategy for Europe on global and regional scale. Wroclaw’s EIT Plus strategy will stimulate knowledge-intensive growth of Wroclaw and the Lower Silesia region by concerted effort of the knowledge triangle stakeholders. The cooperation with the neighbouring regions will contribute to establishing a significant knowledge-based economy region in this part of Central Europe and, consequently, should also lead to strengthening the economic position of Poland. EIT Plus Programme refers to the goals of the visionary EC initiative to establish the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Initial financing for the EIT Plus Programme of ca 200 Mio. € comes from the EU structural funds for 2008-2014. Several core projects for implementation of the EIT Plus programme have been prepared by a new entity, Wroclaw Research Centre EIT Plus Ltd being a company established in 2008 by the City of Wroclaw, the Lower Silesia Region and Wroclaw universities.
