Early Growing Season Flooding Influence on Seedlings of Three Common Bottomland Hardwood Species in Western Tennessee

Abstract Understanding relative flood tolerance of hardwood bottomland seedlings is fundamental to restoring floodplain ecosystems. Thus, we quantified the effects of three early growing season flood duration (0, 15, and 30 d) treatments on survival and growth of overcup Quercus lyrata, Nuttall Q. nuttallii, and willow Q. phellos oak seedlings. Seedlings (n  =  5,003) were planted January–March 2004 in a randomized design among six impoundments in a western Tennessee bottomland. We flooded four impoundments (two 15-d and two 30-d treatments) after seedling bud break initiated in April 2005 and 2006 to simulate overbank flooding of a river. Overall seedling survival measured in July and October 2005 and July 2006 was 96, 89, and 84% overcup, Nuttall, and willow, respectively. Survival of Nuttall and willow was greatest in unflooded control impoundments. All species exhibited the least growth in the 30-d treatment. Growth of Nuttall and willow were generally greater in the 15-d treatment than in the control treatment. We ranked relative seedling flood tolerance as decreasing from overcup to Nuttall to willow, which corresponds with previous greenhouse studies. We recommend that natural resource practitioners plant overcup at low elevations in bottomlands that flood frequently, plant Nuttall at mid-range elevations, and plant willow exclusively at higher elevations that flood infrequently to increase the likelihood of restoration success.

Liquid (VELPAR L) and dry-flowable (VELPAR ULW) hexazinone (2 kg ai ha−1) were aerially applied to a northern New Brunswick clearcut to reduce raspberry [Rubus idaeus L. var. strigosus (Michx.) Maxim] competition. Treatments were applied in June 1987; planting with containerized (multipot) black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] was conducted 2 and 14 months after treatment in August 1987 and 1988. Seedling survival and growth were measured yearly through August 1991. Hexazinone formulation did not affect raspberry control, seedling survival, or growth. Five growing seasons after treatment, raspberry cover was generally less in treated plots than in controls. Seedling survival did not differ among treatments for seedlings planted at either time interval after hexazinone treatment. Seedlings planted 14 months after hexazinone treatment grew poorly compared with those planted 2 months after herbicide treatment. Stem volume of seedlings planted 2 months after hexazinone treatment exceeded that of control seedlings in the first growing season after planting and remained greater than that of control seedlings through 1991. Stem volume increases over controls were restricted to the second growing season after planting for seedlings planted 14 months after hexazinone treatment. Fourth-year stem volume of seedlings planted 2 months after hexazinone treatment was correlated with raspberry cover (r2 = 0.34). As raspberry cover increased, black spruce growth decreased. This research was conducted in May-June 2017 in Hatchery Indoor Maksudi, Astanaanyar, Bandung. This research aims to find out the optimal BIOM-S probiotic on culture media of Nile tilapia, and the influence to survival rate and growth rate of Nile tilapia. This research was conducted by an experiment using Completely Randomized Design (CRD). This research consisted of five treatments and three replications, which were treatment A (control), treatment B (giving probiotic with 0,6 ml/L concentration), treatment C (giving probiotic with 0,8 ml/L concentration), treatment D (giving probiotic with ,0 ml/L concentration), and treatment E (giving probiotic with 1,2 ml/L concentration). The parameters in this research were the survival rate and specific growth rate. Survival rate and specific growth rate used data analysis with F test to find out the influence of each treatment. The concentration of optimal probiotic based on the results was 0.8 ml/L, it produced the highest survival rate for 81.67% and the specific growth rate for 0.039%.

Biochar enriched with organic fertilizer improves the survival and growth rate of Anthocepalus cadamba seedlings planted on degraded spodosols. Biodiversitas 20: 3741-3750. The application of biochar for the improvement of soil properties and fertility has drawn enormous interest worldwide nowadays and numerous application options are now available. This research was aimed to evaluate the effects of the application of biochar and organic fertilizers on the survival and growth of Anthocepalus cadamba seedlings planted on degraded spodosols soil on bioassay trial in the nursery. Bioassay trial was carried out in the nursery of Faculty of Forestry, Mulawarman University, Samarinda, Indonesia, employing a 2-factors Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with factor 1 was the rate of biochar application (i.e. six levels of treatment: 0 (control), 2, 5, 10, 25 and 100%v of biochar), and factor 2 (enrichment of organic fertilizers, i.e. with enrichment and without enrichment), and each treatment combination had 3 replications. The results showed that biochar application alone improved height and diameter growth rate of A. cadamba seedlings by 253% and 116% of control treatment (without biochar), respectively. Enrichment of organic fertilizers gave further improvement in height and diameter growth rate of A. cadamba seedlings to 386% and 150% of control treatment (without biochar), respectively. Furthermore, biochar application improved survival and biomass growth rate of the seedlings. Enrichment of organic fertilizers into biochar improved not only seedling growth rate but also more interestingly the carrying capacity of spodosols to biochar application rate. We concluded that biochar application complemented with enrichment of organic fertilizers on spodosols is highly promising for the improvement of both soil carbon sequestration and plant growth performance.

Abstract Two vegetation management methods, paper mulching and spot-spraying with glyphosate, were combined with a root-dipping treatment, Terra Sorb®, to test effects on seedling survival and height growth on a harsh site in Oregon. Survival of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedlings was significantly higher after the third growing season when competing vegetation had been controlled with mulch or glyphosate during the first two growing seasons. Seedlings retreated with paper mulch and glyphosate before the second growing season had 36 and 25% higher survival than those that were not retreated. None of the seedlings was retreated before the third season; after this season, survival of seedlings treated twice with glyphosate was 26, 23, and 21% higher than seedlings receiving one glyphosate treatment and one or two mulch applications, respectively. There were no differences in seedling height growth among treatments. Rootdipping with Terra Sorb® did not influence survival or growth. West. J. Appl. For. 1:108-111 Oct. 86.

Abstract Japanese Stewartia, Stewartia pseudocamellia (Maxim.), cuttings were rooted and seeds germinated to compare growth and survival of the two plant types. Softwood cuttings collected from 18-month-old, 1 to 1.3 m (3 to 4 ft) tall stock plants were rooted successfully (greater than 64%) at two propagation times by giving severed cuttings a basal quick dip in 0.1 M ascorbic or caffeic acid, before a basal quick dip in 100 ppm indolebutyric acid (IBA). Cuttings were overwintered in either a minimum heat (3C, 35F) polyhouse (89% survival), or in a 7C (45F) cooler (97% survival). There was no difference in height following overwintering, but by the end of the first growing season following propagation, seedlings were significantly taller than rooted cuttings, 84 vs 72 cm (33 vs 28 in), respectively. Although growth was vigorous, survival after upcanning was poor; rooted cutting survival was 17%, seedling survival was 48%. This study demonstrates that Japanese Stewartia can be propagated readily by softwood and semi-hardwood stem cuttings dipped in low IBA concentrations if cuttings are pre-treated with either ascorbic or caffeic acid. These cuttings can also be overwintered successfully.

Abstract Shade-tolerant Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) is a difficult species to reforest successfully in the high-elevation spruce-fir forests of the Rocky Mountains. This study investigated the use of plastic tree shelters as a form of shade protection and a means to improve the growth and survival of planted Engelmann spruce seedlings in southwest Colorado. A total of 1500 seedlings were planted into a 48 ha clearcut site at an average elevation of 3273 m. Treatments included four different colors of tree shelters and a control where seedlings were planted using the traditional shading method. This consisted of shading the seedlings using logging slash, stumps, and vegetation within the site. After two growing seasons, survival was 58% for the control treatment and ranged from 95 to 99% in the lighter three shelter color treatments. The darkest shelter color resulted in 95% mortality after the first growing season. Both height and diameter growth of surviving seedlings were significantly greater in the lightest two shelter color treatments as compared to the control treatment. These results indicate that tree shelters may provide an effective method of improving high-elevation Engelmann spruce reforestation programs. West. J. Appl. For. 16(3):114–120.

The present research was conducted on two factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with eight treatments and three replications. A set of experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of postharvest ethephon treatment and packaging on ripening of mango cv. Maldah. The treatments consisted of ripening agent i.e., ethephon and control treatment under different packaging condition i.e., fiber with hole, fiber without hole, plastic with hole and plastic without hole. The result revealed that different packaging condition and ripening agents influenced the ripening behavior of mango. The highest TSS (15.26), sugar-acid ratio (23.66) and juice content (126.05) were recorded with fiber (without hole) and the lowest TSS (12.60), sugar-acid ratio (9.01) and juice content (116.05) with plastic (without hole). The highest TA (1.44) was recorded with plastic (without hole) and the lowest (0.66) with fiber (without hole). Similarly, the highest BT (2.83) was recorded with fiber (with hole) and the lowest (1.66) with plastic (without hole). Firmness, sweetness, TSS and juice content were the highest with the interaction effect of fiber bag (without hole) and ethephon treatment. In conclusion, mango fruits with ethephon treatment packed in fiber bag (without hole) enhances quality and ripening of mango whereas under controlled condition and without hole plastic packaging mangoes had low quality performance in terms of physio-chemical properties. ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine the interaction effect of storage time and concentration of plantain peel extract and lemongrass on organoleptic characteristics (color, aroma, texture, and elasticity) and total microbes in chicken meatballs. This study used a 2-Factorial Completely Randomized Design method. The first factor was storage time with three levels, namely 0 days (T0), 2 days (T1), and 4 days (T2. Meanwhile, the second factor was the concentration of plantain peel and lemongrass extract with three levels, namely 0% (C0), 30% plantain peel extract + 20% lemongrass extract (C1), 20% banana peel extract + 30% lemongrass extract (C2), and 25% banana peel extract + 25% lemongrass extract (C3). Observation variables were organoleptic tests which included color, aroma, texture, elasticity, and shelf life after treatment based on the results of the total plate count (TPC) calculation. The results show that the 2-day storage period with the addition of 25% plantain peel extract and 25% lemongrass extract (T1C3) was the best treatment for organoleptic characteristics (color, aroma, texture, and elasticity). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the administration of plantain peel extract and lemongrass was able to maintain the quality of chicken meatballs for two different days compared to the control. Treatment with a storage period of 2 days with 25% plantain peel extract and 25% lemongrass extract (T1C3) was the best treatment that was most favored by the panelists and had the least number of microbial colonies.Keywords: Meatballs, preservatives, banana peel extract and lemongrass, storage time.ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh interaksi lama penyimpanan dan konsentrasi ekstrak kulit pisang raja dan serai terhadap uji organoleptik (warna, aroma, tekstur dan kekenyalan) dan total mikroba pada bakso ayam. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Rancangan Acak Lengkap Faktorial 2 Faktor. Faktor Pertama adalah lama penyimpanan yang terdiri dari tiga taraf yaitu 0 hari (T0), 2 hari (T1) dan 4 hari (T2), faktor kedua yaitu perlakuan ekstrak kulit pisang raja yang terdiri atas tiga taraf yaitu konsentrasi 0% (C0), konsentrasi ekstrak kulit pisang raja 30% + konsentrasi ekstrak serai 20% (C1), konsentrasi ekstrak kulit pisang raja 20% + konsentrasi ekstrak serai 30% (C2), konsentrasi ekstrak kulit pisang raja 25% + konsentrasi serai 25% (C3). Variabel pengamatan yaitu uji organoleptik yang meliputi warna, aroma, tekstur, kekenyalan dan daya simpan setelah perlakuan berdasarkan hasil perhitungan jumlah total plate count (TPC). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan lama penyimpanan 2 hari dengan penambahan ekstrak kulit pisang raja 25% dab serai 25% (T1C3) merupakan perlakuan terbaik untuk uji organoleptik (warna, aroma, tekstur dan kekenyalan). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak kulit pisang raja dan serai mampu mempertahankan kualitas bakso ayam selama dua hari yang berbeda dengan kontrol. Perlakuan dengan lama penyimpanan 2 hari dengan pemberianekstrak kulit pisang raja 25% dan serai 25% (T1C3) merupakan perlakuan terbaik yang paling disukai oleh panelis dan memiliki jumlah koloni mikroba paling sedikit.Kata kunci: Bakso, pengawet, ekstrak kulit pisang dan serai, lama penyimpanan
