1. Hypertension was produced experimentally in three groups of rabbits by atherosclerosis, medial sclerosis and renal encapsulation. 2. The sensitivity of afferent baroreceptor fibre recordings, obtained from an isolated perfused aortic arch preparation, was reduced in all three treated groups. 3. The reduction of baroreceptor sensitivity was directly related to the increase in the lability of the blood pressure in the intact animal and to the reduction of the distensibility of the perfused region. 4. There was a closer relationship between the length of time the rabbits had been hypertensive and the reduction in the baroreceptor sensitivity, than to the level of their blood pressure. 5. The reduction of baroreflex sensitivity obtained by the infusion of phenylephrine was also directly correlated with the period of the hypertension. 6. Baroreceptor resetting occurred to a higher pressure in the renal hypertensive group.

INTRODUCTION: The authors present a review article on temporal lobe epilepsy in childhood. METHODS: We performed a search in the literature. RESULTS: The main etiologies of temporal lobe epilepsy in childhood are developmental tumors and focal cortical displasia, besides temporal medial sclerosis. The clinical features may be variable particularly in children younger than six years of age. Epilepsy may present with generalized seizures. Electroencephalographic findings are also variable and show a functional dysfunction of several brain areas besides temporal lobes, especially frontal lobes. CONCLUSION: Recent advances demonstrate that temporal lobe epilepsy in childhood present with great etiologic, clinical and electroencephalographic diversity.

Vascular calcification represents a group of several pathological states of differing aetiologies. Mönckeberg medial sclerosis is considered to be more widespread in the lower abdominal region and lower limbs. We present a 59-years-old male patient presented right foot gangrene. At physical exploration, femoral and popliteal pulses were presented and the ankle-brachial pressure index was 0.45, and the toe-brachial index was 0.33. The patient underwent distal angioplasty of anterior and posterior tibial arteries and due to inaccurate evolution a transmetatarsal amputation was required. Mönckeberg’s medial sclerosis is diagnosed with an ABI>1.1, however, questions have been raised about the validity and the role of ABI in diagnosis of Mönckeberg’s medial sclerosis. Colour-doppler vascular ultrasound allow a non-invasive technique widely available to detect vascular calcification and to differentiation between Mönckeberg’s medial sclerosis and the atherosclerosis-related lesions.
