Recent research on edible insects’ composition has placed more emphasis on the quantity and quality of macro- and micro- nutrients and less emphasis on their bio-active components. This study aimed at assessing the effect of four factors, namely: defatting, solvent type (ethanol, methanol and acetone), solvent concentration (50, 75 and 100%) and extraction time (15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes) on the extraction efficiency, the total anti-oxidant activity and the amount of total phenolics and total flavonoids of Ruspolia differens. It was not known if the removal of fat (defatting) would influence the total anti-oxidant activity, and the distribution of anti-oxidant compounds in the R. differens matrix. Non-defatting use of acetone and sonication for 60 minutes are associated with high anti-oxidant activity and high amounts of bio-active compounds extracted. Aqueous acetone (50%) extracts had the highest average anti-oxidant activity (87.00±2.59% RSA) while 100% acetone extracts had the highest average total phenolics (11.14±0.18 GAE/g) and average total flavonoids (3.02±0.21 QE/g) content, indicating the presence of other, possibly highly polar, bio-active compounds in R. differens.

Black mulberry leaves teas (BMLTs) were prepared using boiled water and different steeping time (5 10, 20, 35 and 45 minutes). In order to establish the connection between steeping time and tea quality, total phenolics content (TPC), total flavonoids content TFC contents were measured, as well as two antioxidant assays (DPPH and reducing power assays), alone with antimicrobial and cytotoxic tests. The obtained results showed that TPC, TFC, IC50 and EC50 values increased with the increase in steeping time, while antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity exhibited different tendency. Based on the obtained results, the 10-minute steeping time was the optimum for tea preparation and this tea was used for the determination of polyphenolic profile using HPLC-MS technique. The results showed that the main compounds in BMLT were chlorogenic and caffeic acids with the contents of 7226.00 and 537.52 ?g/g, respectively.

Abstract Niuhuang Jiangya (NHJY) pill is one of the well-known Chinese patent medicines in China used in the treatment of high blood pressure. The primary purpose of this study was to establish and validate a method using HPLC with tandem MS for the quality evaluation of NHJY pill through simultaneous determination of the following five active components: baicalin, paeoniflorin, astragaloside IV, ferulic acid, and emodin. Chromatographic separation was carried out on a Hypersil GOLD HPLC C18 column (50 × 4.6 mm, 3 μm) with acetonitrileand water as mobile phase and gradient elution at a flow rateof 0.4 mL/min. The method established in this study was selective, linear, precise, and accurate and was successfully applied to evaluate five active components in NHJY pill collectedfrom different production batches, which could be considered a good approach to control the quality of NHJY pill and other related botanical drugs.

Introduction. Honey is a dietary component with exceptional taste and health benefits. It is one of the most frequently counterfeit food products. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of honey on the basis of selected parameters, their compliance with standards and to determine the antioxidant properties of honey. Material and methods. The experimental material consisted of 22 samples of four types of honey: rapeseed, acacia, honeydew and multiflorous honey. The tests included the determination of water and extract content, the amount of free acids (acidity). The electrical conductivity was measured and the content of: total phenolics (TP), carotenoids (TC), and sucrose was determined. The antioxidant activity was determined spectrophotometrically using the DPPH radical and the FRAP method. Results. The total polyphenols content ranges from 0.2 mg to about 1.2 mg in 1 g of honey, carotenoid content between 4.34 to 5.26 mg/kg, in two cases, the moisture content exceeded the required value, all honeys are appropriate conductivity (except for honeydew), acidity and sucrose content. Research on the antioxidant properties of various honey varieties (DPPH and FRAP) showed the advantage of honeydew honey over other varieties. Conclusions. Most of the tested honey met the requirements of the standards. Possible deviations were minor. It can be noticed that honeys of one variety of different origin have different parameters – which proves the influence of many factors on the honey production process.

The flower and leaf of hawthorn contains many active components, used in the production of pharmaceutical preparations for cardiotonic, anti-hypertonic anti-hypotonic, artherosclerotic, anti-arithmic and anti-anemic groups. According to the ROTTE list (1996), 159 of 1800 pharmaceutical preparations contain components from hawthorn. Due to the remedial action of hyperoside and other flavonoids from hawthorn, their determination is important for the standardization of extract and preparation quality. The extraction of the flavonoids from a mixture of hawthorn (C. oxycantha and C. monogyna) flower and leaf was carried out by percolation with 40% and 70% (v/v) ethanol. In order to determine the content of total flavonoids calculated as hyperoside spectrophotometric method with aluminium(lll) chloride as a colour reagent at 425 nm was applied. The total flavonoid content in the herbal material mixture was 0.483%, in 40% and 70% (v/v) ethanolic liquid extract it was 138 mg/100 cm3 and 157 mg/100 cm, respectively. The extraction degree of total flavonoids with 40% and 70% (v/v) ethanolic solutions was 57.14% and 65.01% respectively. The yield of total flavonoids in the dry extract was 63% in regard to the herbal mixure content.

Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, also called wuweizi in China, was a widely used folk medicine in China, Korea, and Russia. Due to the limited natural resources and huge demand of wuweizi, people tend to cultivate wuweizi to protect this species. However, the quality of wild and cultivated herbs of the same species may change. Little attention has been paid to comparing wild and cultivated wuweizi based on simultaneous determination of its active components, such as lignans and organic acids. An analytical method based on UFLC-QTRAP-MS/MS was used for the simultaneous determination of 15 components, including 11 lignans (schisandrin, gomisin D, gomisin J, schisandrol B, angeloylgomisin H, schizantherin B, schisanhenol, deoxyschizandrin, γ-schisandrin, schizandrin C, and schisantherin) and 4 organic acids (quinic acid, d(−)-tartaric acid, l-(−)-malic acid, and protocatechuic acid) in wuweizi under different ecological environments. Principal components analysis (PCA), partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA), independent sample t-test, and gray relational analysis (GRA) have been applied to classify and evaluate samples from different ecological environments according to the content of 15 components. The results showed that the differential compounds (i.e., quinic acid, l-(−)-malic acid, protocatechuic acid, schisandrol B) were significantly related to the classification of wild and cultivated wuweizi. GRA results demonstrated that the quality of cultivated wuweizi was not as good as wild wuweizi. The protocol not just provided a new method for the comprehensive evaluation and quality control of wild and cultivated wuweizi, but paved the way to differentiate them at the chemistry level.

Shallot is one of the typical plants at Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, famous by local people as fried Shallot. It is used as a cooking spice and traditional medicine for treating various diseases. This study was carried out to assess the phytochemical constituent including total phenolics, total flavonoids, and quercetin content of the Palu shallot (Allium ascalonicum L var. aggregatum), and to determine the antifungal and antioxidant properties of this plant ethanolic extract. Total phenolics/ flavonoids and quercetin concentration were determined by spectrophotometry UV-Vis and Reverse Phase - High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) methods. Antifungal activity and antioxidant capacity of the ethanolic extract was assayed by using diffusion agar and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods. Results of the study revealed that the total flavonoids content of the ethanolic extract was 0.3634 ± 0.018 mg QE/100 mg while total phenolics content was 0.4834 ± 0.003 mg GAE/100 mg. Meanwhile, the quercetin content was 65.46±0.0002 mg/kg. Further, ethanolic extract of Palu shallot also showed the radical scavenging activity with IC50 of 0.1398 mg/mL and growth inhibition on Candida albicans with inhibitory zone diameter range from 7.57 to 16.51 mm. This study confirms the high quality of Palu shallot as it has high total flavonoids, represented by the high quercetin concentration, and it is proposed to be a source for an antioxidant and antifungal medicinal herb.

Abstract A simple, sensitive, and reliable ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) method has been developed for simultaneous determination of 22 major constituents in modified xiaoyao san (MXS), a multiherbal formula. The chromatographic separation was performed on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (150 × 2.1 mm, 1.7 μm, particle size), with an aqueous 0.5% acetic acid and acetonitrile mobile phase gradient. The method was validated for linearity (r2 >0.9937), intraday and interday precision (RSD <8.51%), recovery (91.18–107.73%), LOD (0.02–4.17 ng/mL), and LOQ (0.05–12.50 ng/mL). The established method was successfully applied to quantify the 22 marker compounds in MXS, which provided a useful basis of overall evaluation of the quality of MXS.

Wines and grapes contain a large array of phenolic compounds belonging to non-flavonoids and flavonoids. This study evaluates the polyphenolic contents of six commercial red and white Macedonian wines and four grape varieties. Spectrophotometric methods were applied for the determination of the total phenolics, the total flavonoids, the total anthocyanins and the total catechins. The efficiency of acetone/water (80/20) and methanol/water (80/20) solutions for the extraction of polyphenols from grape pulp, seeds and skins were compared. The best extraction efficiency was achieved using acetone/ water. The obtained results showed that Macedonian grapes are rich in polyphenols, whereby the highest concentration of total phenolics was found for Vranec grapes. The analyzed wines contained high contents of polyphenol; the highest contents were found for Disan wine produced from the Vranec variety of grapes (1515 mg/L total phenolics, 1103 mg/L total flavonoids, 237 mg/L total anthocyanins and 845 mg/L total catechins). Principal component analysis was employed to check possible groupings of the studied red and white wine samples. A clear separation of white wines from red ones was observed.
