Cold rolled thin strip has received a great deal of attention through technological and theoretical progress in the rolling process, as well as from researchers who have focused on some essential parameters of strip such as its shape and profile. This paper describes the development of a 3-D finite element model of the shape of thin strip during cold rolling to simulate the cold rolling of WCS (work roll crossing and shifting) in asymmetric rolling. This finite element model considers the asymmetrical rolling parameters such as variations in the diameters of the rolls and the crossing angle as the work roll shifts on the strip during cold rolling. The shape and profile of the strip are discussed in the asymmetrical and symmetrical rolling conditions, while the total rolling force and distribution of stress are discussed in the case where the roll cross angle and axial shifting roll changes. The results can then be used to control the shape and profile of thin strip during rolling.

The equipment and technology characteristics of endless strip production line in Rizhao steel were analyzed and the achievements of endless strip production in Rizhao steel were illustrated with detailed productive data in 2017. The achievements of endless continuous casting process was introduced from the aspects of the mold level deviation, the casting speed and the tundish temperature. The achievements of endless continuous rolling process was described from the rolling length, the mechanical properties and the microstructure at different position along the width. The achievements of endless continuous casting and rolling process was discussed from the product qualification rate, the yield rate, the thin strip ratio, the accident rate and the energy consumption. The productive practice of endless strip production (ESP) shows that the longest number of continuous casting furnace reached to 15 heats (4500 tons), the longest rolling length in single casting period was 182 km, the qualified rate of products was up to 99.73%, the yield rate was up to 97.51% and the thin strip ratio had a maximum value of 40.57%. At the same time, its accident rate was below 2.02% and its energy consumption was less than 27.26 kgce·ton-1. These achievements indicated that the ESP line in Rizhao steel had the advantages of low cost, good performance and green manufacturing, so the endless rolling technology will be rapidly promoted and the hot rolled thin products by ESP will further expand the market.

A feed-forward control method for cold rolled strip flatness is put forward. That is to carry out feed-forward compensation to bending force of the stand, so as to mitigate the complex influence caused by changes of rolling force and tension in rolling process on strip flatness based on regular flatness feedback control which focus on the last stand, according to changes in stand rolling force, inlet tension and outlet tension measured. Result shows that this technique not only increased the flatness quality of the strip cold-rolled, but also increased the stability of cold-rolling process of thin strip when it was actually applied in a cold tandem mill.

Controlling cold strip profile is a difficult and significant problem has been found in industry during thin strip rolling. At present choosing the new type of strip rolling mill is the one of main methods to control the strip shape quality in cold rolling. The influences of rolling process parameters such as the work roll cross angle and work roll shifting on the strip shape and profile of thin strip are recognised throughout this study. The results show that the roll crossing and shifting is efficient way to control the strip shape. The increase of the work roll crossing angle would lead to improve the strip profile significantly by decreasing the exit strip crown and edge drop. The strip profile would be enhanced if the axial roll shifting was increased. Moreover, the total rolling force was analysed in detail by changing the roll cross angle and axial shifting roll.

Strip profile control during rolling is required to assure the dimensional quality of rolled thin strip is acceptable for customers. Throughout rolling, the strip profile is controlled by using the advanced shape control rolling mill, such as the combination of work roll crossing and shifting during asymmetrical rolling, the one of the valuable methods to control the strip profile quality in rolling process. In this paper, the influences of cold rolling parameters such as the crossing angle and axial shifting value of work rolls on the strip profile are analysed. The strip shape control is discussed under both symmetrical and asymmetrical rolling conditions. The obtained results are appropriate to control the rolled thin strip profile in practice.

Twin-roll thin strip casting process combines casting and hot rolling process into a single step; in which melt and solid states exist in the casting region, so its deformation is more complex than rolling process. In this paper, Anand’s model, a unified visco-plasticity constitutive model, was employed to simulate the highly nonlinear behavior in the twin-roll casting process. Anand model’s parameters were regressed based on compression tests at various temperature and strain rate for magnesium alloy AZ31. To calculate the thermal mechanical stresses, the thermal flow of twin-roll casting process was simulated firstly; then stresses were calculate, in which the temperature field result of thermal flow was imposed as body load, and a small displacement load along roller tangential direction was imposed simultaneously in order to simulate rolling action. The deformation results can well describe the forward slip zone, backward slip zone and melt eddy zone in the casting region. Based on the results, the applicability of Anand’s model on twin-roll casting process was discussed.
