In ichthyological publications from both Russia as a whole, and from the study region, lack of data indicating the actual results of observations in a specific place all result in publication of a generalised analysis. Although our publications contain such data, they are, however, not convenient for users performing global analysis. The main purpose of publishing a database is to make our data available in the global biodiversity system to a wide range of users. Dataset represents a significant addition to the distribution of species in this area. The data can be used to analyse future changes in ichthyofauna, as well as to help the authorities to manage their territory more efficiently. This publication describes a dataset that contains information on fish encounters in the Upper Don basin and the middle Volga (centre of the European part of Russia) over a 30-year period (1990-2020). The dataset contains information on 6400 occurrences of 394341 specimens of 56 species, 99.9% of specimens being identified to the species level. A total of 883 sites were studied, of which 253 were in lentic biotopes (lakes - 121, ponds - 123, backwater - 5, reservoir - 3, pit - 1), 630 were in lotic (rivers - 628, stream - 1, channel - 1). One collecting site has an average of 7.2 species (from 1-21 species per location). Only those species that form self-reproducing populations are given. The dataset is a compilation of data from several working author groups. All observations have precise geo-referencing with the names of water bodies (rivers, lakes etc.). All presented data are published in the form of a database for the first time. Some data form the basis of previously-published works (3998 observations, 62%) and some are published for the first time (2402 observations, 38%). A large amount of data comes from small water bodies that have been neglected by previous researchers.

Birds are the most numerous and widespread group of higher vertebrates. Due to the peculiarities of their biology, birds play an important role in nature and in human life. Ornithological studies described in this publication were conducted in seven regions of the Middle Volga Region (Chuvashia, Mordovia, Tatarstan, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk and Penza Regions) from 1978 to 2021. Visual and acoustic methods were used to study the species composition during field studies. In total, 5065 birdoccurrences belonging to 157 species, 48 families and 19 orders were registered. All occurrences have a geographical reference. The large volume of data collected, the wide geographical coverage and the long-term nature of the observations determined the value of their inclusion in the GBIF and the need for publication in the Biodiversity Data Journal. We are publishing our original data on the coordinates of bird occurrences in the Middle Volga Region for the first time. Most of the original information about bird occurrences was contained in field diaries and was not available to a wide range of researchers. All 5065 occurrences are new to GBIF.

The paper provides the results of seven-year study of downy mildew on Skadovsky Zvenigorod Biological Station of Moscow State University (ZBS MSU, Moscow Region). A total of 29 species of Peronosporales (Oomycota) were revealed during the study. An annotated list of species is presented, among them Peronospora anemones is recorded for the first time for Russia, P. chelidonii and P. stachydis are new for the European part of Russia, 8 species are new for the Moscow Region.

The corticioid basidiomycete Jaapia ochroleuca (Bres.) Nannf. et J. Erikss. is recorded for the first time in the European Russia from the «Bryansky Les» Nature Reserve (Bryansk Region). The taxonomic position of the species is defined briefly. Its morphological description and data on distribution and ecology are provided. The details of microscopic structure of the collected specimen are illustrated.

Thirty-one lichen-forming fungi, 12 lichenicolous fungi, and 5 non-lichenized fungi are reported as new for Arkhangelsk Region; 7 species are new for its mainland area. Micarea fallax is reported for the first time for Russia; M. laeta and M. pusilla are new for the European part of Russia. The second finding of Nicropuncta rugulosa for Russia is recorded; microconidia are first observed in this species. The records of ten species which have been included in the new edition of the Red Data Book of the Arkhangelsk Region (2020) are presented. Nephromopsis laureri from the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation (2008) and Leptogium rivulare from the IUCN Red List are reported for the first time for Arkhangelsk Region.

<p>The North American Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) consists of millions of wetlands and holds great importance for biodiversity, water storage and flood management. The wetlands cover a wide range of sizes from a few square metres to several square kilometres. Prairie hydrology is greatly influenced by the threshold behaviour of potholes leading to spilling as well as merging of adjacent wetlands. The knowledge of seasonal and inter-annual surface water dynamics in the PPR is critical for understanding this behaviour of connected and isolated wetlands. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, e.g. used by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission, have great potential to provide high-accuracy wetland extent maps even when cloud cover is present. We derived water extent during the ice-free months May to October from 2015 to 2020 by fusing dual-polarised Sentinel-1 backscatter data with topographical information. The approach was applied to a prairie catchment in North Dakota. Total water area, number of water bodies and median area per water body were computed from the time series of water extent maps. Surface water dynamics showed strong seasonal dynamics especially in the case of small water bodies (< 1 ha) with a decrease in water area and number of small water bodies from spring throughout summer when evaporation rates in the PPR are typically high. Larger water bodies showed a more stable behaviour during most years. Inter-annual dynamics were strongly related to drought indices based on climate data, such as the Palmer Drought Severity Index. During the extremely wet period of late 2019 to 2020, the dynamics of both small and large water bodies changed markedly. While a larger number of small water bodies was encountered, which remained stable throughout the wet period, also the area of larger water bodies increased, partly due to merging of smaller adjacent water bodies. The results demonstrate the potential of Sentinel-1 data for long-term monitoring of prairie wetlands while limitations exist due to the rather low temporal resolution of 12 days over the PPR.</p>

Euastrum is one of the most important genus of desmids, have been selected as widely represented in the flora of the water bodies of Europe. The algal samples were collected from different localities of ten regions of European part of Russia. Cells of 50 species of Euastrum was examined in scanning electron microscope. Cell wall of the Euastrum have some specific pits, which are called scrobicles. Its size, shape and quantity vary from species to species. Out of more than 250 species Euastrum, described 73 taxa for which the preference for acidity of the environment, biotopic confinement, and distribution over Europe and other continents are known. The dictionary of the most used terms is given.

New taxonomic, morphological and faunistic data for three Western Palaearctic species of the genus Acrolocha Thomson, 1858 are provided. Acrolocha caucasica Tóth, 1976 is redescribed and illustrated. The lectotype for A. pliginskii Bernhauer, 1912 is designated. Acrolocha amabilis (Heer, 1841) is recorded from Central European part of Russia and Georgia for the first time.

Presented are the results of gene-typing of CCHF virus detected in clinical samples from CHF patients from the Stavropol, Rostov and Astrakhan Regions in 2011. For 28 samples determined are nucleotide sequences of the fragments 115–652 (S segment) and fragments 984–1469 (M segment). Philogenetic analysis of these nucleotide sequences demonstrated that typical strains circulated in 2011 in the regions under surveillance, importation of the new genetic variants of the virus did not take place. CCHF virus variant affiliated to the subgroup “Astrakhan-2” was detected in the clinical samples for the first time and characterized for its genome S- and M-segment fragments.

For the first time, the phytosterol state of the underground and aboveground organs of the tuberoid species of the orchid Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soó (Orchidaceae), which grows in the natural conditions of the Central European part of Russia, was studied using gas chromatography with a mass spectrometric detector. The plant material contains cycloartenol, cycloeukalenol, campesterol, brassicasterin, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and ergosterol, which was found in underground organs and belong to mycosymbiont. The ergosterol content in the adventitious roots is five times higher compared to the endings of stem root tuberoids. The phytosterols content of the aboveground organs of D. maculata is more diverse than that of the underground organs. The basic sterol of D. maculata is β-sitosterol (60%), which is present in all organs. Also a high amount was noted for cycloartenol (20%), which is absent in the stem. Cycloeukalenol (7%) was found in inflorescences and leaves, campesterol (2%) in inflorescences, brassicasterin (5%) in the adventitious roots, stigmasterol (5%) in the leaves. Differences in the sterol statuses of organs can be explained by the biochemical characteristics of their tissues and the uneven functional significance of the identified compounds for the growth and development of generative individuals of D. maculata in the budding phase. The results obtained indicate the diversity of phytosterol compounds and their uneven content in various organs of the studied plant object.
