Epeoloidespilosulus, one of the rarest bees in North America, is a cleptoparasite ofMacropisbees which themselves are uncommon oligoleges of oil-producingLysimachiaflowers. Only two specimens of the cleptoparasite have been reported from Canada since the 1960s, both from Nova Scotia.A recently collected specimen ofEpeoloidespilosulusfrom Alberta, Canada confirms this species from that province and greatly increases its known range in western North America. This record and additional specimens from southern Ontario (one collected in 1978) have implications for the conservation status of this COSEWIC assessed species in Canada, which are discussed.

Abstract A description is provided for Phacellium episphaerium, a plant parasite, with records on living, dying and dead leaves. This species is known to be found in mixed broadleaf semi-natural woodland, but from the known geographical distribution and the distribution of associated plants. Some information on its associated organisms and substrata, habitats, dispersal and transmission and conservation status is given, along with details of its geographical distribution (Africa (Morocco), North America (Canada (British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Nunavut), USA (Wisconsin)), Arctic (Svalbard and Jan Mayen), Asia (China, Japan, Russia, Korea Republic, Uzbekistan), Europe (Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia (Leningrad oblast), Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, UK, former Yugoslavia)) and hosts (Cerastium spp., Stellaria spp. and some other members of the Caryophyllaceae). No reports of negative economic impacts of this fungus have been found.

Abstract A description is provided for Loma morhuae, which infects Gadus morhua (fish family Gadidae) off the northern east coast of North America; infections developing in the host cytoplasm (but not in nerve tissues), without diplokarya, and resulting in tumours (also known as 'xenomas') in which the host nucleus is centrally located. Some information on its dispersal and transmission, habitats and conservation status is given, along with details of its geographical distribution (North America (Canada (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia))).

Using the haematocrit centrifuge technique, Trypanosoma ambystomae was recorded from Ambystoma jeffersonianum, Ambystoma platineum, Ambystoma laterale, Ambystoma maculatum, and Ambystoma tremblayi from five areas in southern Ontario. The percentage of infected animals varied from about 5% in A. tremblayi to 27% in A. platineum and A. maculatum. This report not only expands the host range for the trypanosome, it is also the first report of it being found outside western North America. The division process of the trypanosome in the salamander is described and it is shown that it can be maintained in salamanders in the laboratory by blood inoculation.

Abstract The daylily gall midge, Contarinia quinquenotata (Loew) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is an ornamental pest of daylilies, Hemerocallis spp. Linneas (Asphodelaceae). Originally native to Asia, this pest was accidentally introduced to western North America, and it is believed to occur throughout other parts of North America even though its presence has not been confirmed. Using an online survey of gardeners across Canada’s “Maritimes” (the region that includes the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island), we determined that symptoms of the pest occurred at multiple sites across Nova Scotia, but we received no reports from Prince Edward Island or New Brunswick. Sequencing the cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene of the samples submitted by community scientists, we confirmed the daylily gall midge occurs at multiple sites across Nova Scotia. A common garden study that included 517 daylily varieties found that yellow-flowering varieties were almost twice as likely to be affected as nonyellow varieties. Early-flowering varieties were more likely to be attacked than later-flowering varieties. For each day that the date at first flowering was delayed, the likelihood of gall midge attack decreased by 16%. To avoid or mitigate damage where the daylily gall midge occurs, selecting late-flowering varieties with nonyellow flowers can be a useful complement to destructing infested flower buds.

Bur Buttercup (Ranunculus testiculatus) is newly reported for eastern Canada based on two collections from campgrounds in southern Ontario. This vernal, annual, Eurasian weed is widespread in western North America and is expanding its range in the east; it should be expected elsewhere in eastern Canada. Bur Buttercup is known to be toxic to livestock.
