The urban environment is a networked metabolic organism. The urban environment includes networks that feed it with energy, resources, people, goods and information. The urban environment carries out a permanent transformation of matter, energy and produces waste, which together change the urban environment. We have proposed to use an indicator for assessing the efficiency of the metabolism of the urban environment, which allows to take into account the relationship between the urban structure, energy consumption, emissions of pollutants and the intensity of consumption of natural resources. We use this indicator as a tool for forecasting sustainable urban development. Using the example of Poltava city, we have shown that the indicator for assessing the metabolic efficiency of the urban environment can be used as one of the decision-making tools for the sustainable development of Ukrainian cities. The improvement of existing and development of new indicators is an important task towards the implementation of the concept of sustainable development, which is a logical continuation of the teachings of V. I. Vernadsky on the noosphere.

The analysis of domestic and foreign sources on the methodology of construction and use of integral indices of quality of the urban environment and sustainable urban development was carried out. It is shown that these indices can be represented as urban-ecological in a broad sense. A method developed by the authors for the formation of a dynamic quality index of the urban environment, which allows the dynamics of the index and its components to evaluate both the quality of the urban environment and the direction of its change, is presented. Using the example of Kirov, the environmental characteristics of the urban environment, taken into account when calculating the index, and the problems of their measurement and presentation are described in detail. The prospects of the developed methodology for solving problems of urban ecological development are shown.

This chapter explores the relationship between international development and global health. Contrary to the view that development implies ‘good change’, this chapter argues that the discourse of development masks the destructive and exploitative practices of wealthy countries at the expense of poorer ones. These practices, and the unregulated capitalist economic system that they are part of, have created massive inequalities between and within countries, and potentially catastrophic climate change. Both of these outcomes are detrimental to global health and the millennium development goals and sustainable development goals do not challenge these dynamics. While the Sustainable Development Goals acknowledge that inequality and climate change are serious threats to the future of humanity, they fail to address the economic system that created them. Notwithstanding, it is possible that the enormity and proximity of the threat posed by inequality and global warming will energise a counter movement to create what Kate Raworth terms ‘an ecologically safe and socially just space’ for the global population while there is still time.

Urban parks are critical for sustainable urban development. They are of theoretical and practical significance for analyzing the visual landscape of recreational spaces from the perspective of the elderly. This analysis can be used for exploring new methods for optimizing recreational space layouts to improve the physical and mental health of the elderly in parks, thus realizing the sustainable development of urban society. Taking Ziyang Park in Shangrao Central District of Jiangxi Province, China, as an example, starting from the visual characteristics of the elderly, this study quantitatively calculated the landscape viewability, total view ratio, and water view ratio for the elderly in each recreational space using Python Scripting for ArcGIS. We briefly express the elderly suitability of the visual landscape for each recreational space through a weighted synthesis of the calculation results. Our findings show that, in Ziyang Park, the elderly suitability of the visual landscape for recreational spaces is not only low overall, but also gradually decreases from the interior to the exterior of this park. Moreover, this spatial distribution may be caused by the location of zoning, surface elevation, and road slopes, as well as the individual characteristics of each recreational space. Finally, we discuss the requirements of the elderly for some geographical factors, along with the feasibility of using ArcGIS 3-D analysis to optimize the layout of the park recreational space, with the aim of providing a new research perspective and an effective reference method for designing layouts of such spaces that are favorable for the elderly to better guarantee the sustainable development of urban society.

The article considers the issues of social infrastructure planning. The purpose of the study is to draw up the list of social infrastructure facilities that provide favorable and secure conditions of living, differentiation of placement of these facilities in the territory and interpretation of priorities in planning sustainable development of the city. The authors have analyzed the researches of global cities development problems, the characteristics of life quality of population and the characteristics of the most demanded facilities of social infrastructure. On the base of a general methodological approach, random decomposition and induction methods, taxonomic analysis and expert evaluation, the authors constructed models for planning the placement of social infrastructure facilities. Comparative analysis of the models allowed describing three levels of social facilities placement that provide favorable living conditions and life quality for population. The authors have systemized the indicators of social infrastructure that is significant for the sustainable urban development, largely ensuring the good quality of the urban environment, secure and favorable living conditions. The results of the research can be used as a methodological basis for studying problems of sustainable development of global cities, good quality of urban environment. Research exists regarding personality traits in relation to connectedness with nature. However, it is not possible to increase personality through training. As an alternative, intrapreneurial self-capital (ISC) could be a promising core of resources for enhancing the sustainable development of behaviors and practices. Using a sample of 198 workers, this study exploratively analyzed the relationship between the extraversion personality trait, ISC, and connectedness to nature. A mediation model was employed to assess the effects of extraversion on connectedness to nature (outcome variable) through ISC (conceived as an intervening mediator variable). The mediation analysis highlighted that ISC potentially promotes workers’ connectedness to nature within organizations. Thus, implementing dedicated interventions to increase ISC could encourage sustainable development by enhancing workers’ levels of connectedness to nature.
